TowersStreet Planet Coaster Speed Build Contest 2024/25: Welcome and Sign-Up (Week 1 ends 15th November)

Hi, everyone! I know it feels like hardly any time since March, but believe it or not, the closed season is almost here once again, and that can only mean one thing; the return of the TowersStreet Planet Coaster Speed Build Contest! Despite this being the 4th of these contests I’ve run, there still seems to be an appetite for them, so I’m back again with another one this closed season!

Let me start by explaining how the contest works, to ensure that anyone new has a good idea of how things work if they’d like to join in and to give our previous players a nice jog of the memory…
How does the contest work?
So for those of you who’ve never played before, as well as previous players who might need a reminder, let me go over some bullet points to sum up the basic gist of the contest:
  • At the start of each round, I will post a brief inspired by a real world context, which could be UK-based or global. Your task is to build a roller coaster in Planet Coaster (console or PC; it doesn’t matter) that meets that brief. Each brief will give you constraints to work within, such as a min/max height, min/max speed, min/max length, max footprint, or possibly even something else entirely.
  • Once you have built your creation, you need to film a POV and/or off-ride shots and post your filmed video(s) in this thread.
  • When the building stage of a round ends, we will then move onto a voting stage, where we will have the opportunity to vote in a Google Form for which layouts we like most from that week. There are also options to nominate Most Original and Most Realistic. Whoever gets the most points in a given round wins that round, and the points are allocated through weighting of the rankings given. In the regular rounds, a #1 ranking scores 5 points, a #2 ranking scores 4 points, a #3 ranking scores 3 points, a #4 ranking scores 2 points, and a #5 ranking scores 1 point. The exception to this is the Bonus Round at the end of the competition, where each ranking is worth double what it is in a regular round.
  • Each round will last 2 weeks, broken down into 1 week for the building stage and 1 week for the voting stage. Rounds will run concurrently, so when we’re voting for a round, we’ll also be building for the next round and viewing the results of the previous round.
  • I should point out that this is a roller coaster layout building contest, so don’t focus too much on theming. By all means put some light landscaping and terraforming in if you would like to, but please place primary emphasis upon the layout. You will gain nothing points-wise from any theming you add and lose nothing for not adding theming; rankings in the voting stage should be based solely upon the coaster layout produced.
  • When all the rounds have elapsed, the person who has accumulated the most points throughout the competition wins. There are also winning plaudits for those who have gained the most Originality and Realism points throughout the competition.
I feel I should also address another point, as since the last contest ended, we’ve had a rather interesting development in the form of the impending release of Planet Coaster 2. Perhaps controversially, I have taken the decision to not allow Planet Coaster 2 in this year’s contest. The game releases on Wednesday, and I wouldn’t like to assume that everyone will be an early adopter of Planet Coaster 2, so to keep things fair, can I ask everyone to stick to the original game for this contest?

I don’t know what anyone else thinks, and if people would like me to change my policy on this, I’m willing to be flexible, particularly if early adoption of Planet Coaster 2 is higher than I expect. But as of right now, I am not allowing Planet Coaster 2 to be used in this contest; please stick to the original Planet Coaster.

In terms of changes for this year; there aren’t too many. Things will, for the most part, be the same as they were last year; people seem pretty happy with the format as is, so I’ve chosen not to make any major changes.

However, there is one change I am introducing in the form of a new potential constraint in some rounds… following a brilliant suggestion, I have decided to introduce budget as a potential constraint in rounds for this year’s contest! It’s a thing that every real park in the world has to deal with, so I thought that it might be interesting to add the financial side of things into the mix in some rounds! Not every round will have a budget constraint, but some definitely will, so keep your eyes peeled for some budget based rounds…

Now we’ve covered that point, let me go over some of the dull boiler-plate stuff…
Important things to note
  • As with last year, our changeover day will be Saturday. Rounds will close on Friday at 11:45pm (this is adjusted from previous years to give me a bit of time to compile things), and new rounds will be posted on Saturday at 12am. The post on Saturday at 12am will take the form of a Weekly Digest, containing the brief and build details for a new round, voting details and the Google Form voting link for the previous round, and the results from the round before that.
  • The contest only accepts original Planet Coaster players. I don’t care what PlanCo version you build in (you can build in PC, console or another version entirely), but I can only accept entrants building in the original Planet Coaster, sorry. I think it’s important to keep the playing field reasonably level, and it also gives me a bit more flexibility when designing rounds. Furthermore, it doesn’t exclude anyone who’s played previously; this contest has only ever attracted Planet Coaster players in the past.
  • If you do not think you can build a submission for a round in time for the deadline, you can request an extension from me and I will extend the deadline. However, these extensions will only happen on request. If you do not specifically ask me for an extension in this thread or via PM, I will assume that you are happy to forfeit the round and move on. I’m sorry if that sounds harsh, but I think it keeps the contest flowing more smoothly.
  • Each round will have constraints that you must stay within. However, you can do whatever you want within those constraints; unless I’ve specifically said you can’t do something, then you can do it!
  • In the voting stage, you must vote via Google Form for your votes to be counted. I will post a link in the Weekly Digest, and that form needs to be your first port of call. However, you can also post your picks publicly within the thread if you wish. The Google Form is a must, but I’m certainly not stopping you from posting your picks publicly within the thread.
  • Picking #1, #2, #3, #4 and #5 submissions when voting is compulsory, but making nominations for Most Realistic and Most Original is optional. If you don’t wish to nominate entries for these categories, you don’t have to.
  • Please bear in mind that the numbered ranking categories in the Google Form (#1, #2, #3, #4 and #5) are intended to be mutually exclusive, and if you put a submission in one ranking spot, you should not put it in another. I will reject any ballots cast with one submission nominated for multiple ranking spots (for instance, you cannot nominate a submission as both your #1 and your #2). This does not apply to Most Realistic and Most Original, however; if you are making nominations in these categories, you can nominate the same submission for both, and you can also nominate a submission that you have already put in your 1-5 ranking for one or both of these categories if you wish.
  • Please do not vote for yourself in the voting stages either. There’s no way I can enforce this, so I’m trusting you all to be honest here.
I think that’s everything in terms of the boiler plate stuff…

In terms of the contest length; the first round will drop on Saturday 9th November 2024, and the contest will end on Saturday 15th March 2025, the first day of Alton Towers’ 2025 season. I’m not currently certain on how many rounds this will result in, but based on previous years, I think there will be 17 or 18 rounds in total, including the Bonus Round at the end.

To join in, simply post in this thread to indicate your interest. If you post in here indicating that you’re interested in competing, you’re in! I’m going to give people 7 days to sign up and get settled in, and I will drop Round 1 on Saturday 9th November 2024 at 12am. You can sign up at any time during the competition, but please be aware that signing up after the contest has begun will put you at a points disadvantage relative to other players.

So, I think that’s just about everything I need to cover! I hope everyone enjoys the 2024/25 contest; the last three seemed to be warmly received, so I hope that people enjoy this one just as much!

If you have any feedback or want me to make any changes before we begin, please don’t hesitate to tell me and I’ll be sure to take your feedback into account. If you have any questions, I’m also more than happy to answer them.

But to conclude… Speed Build season is here once again, folks!

I've got a busy time coming up with A-level mocks and all those joys so may not be able to participate every week but I am in!

Yep count me in.

I'll be playing Planet Coaster on Xbox One, but personally would have no issue with Planet Coaster 2 being allowed. It's basically the same coaster models but with added water parks right?

As always work is flat-out from now until New Years (yay panto!) but count me in, it's always great fun to compete.

I'm getting Planco 2 at launch so I'm happy to use that as and when it's allowed.

The thing that put me off allowing Planet Coaster 2 is that the coaster building system is supposedly different and better, so I wasn't sure if that might give Planet Coaster 2 players an unfair advantage.

I myself am adopting Planet Coaster 2 from launch, however, so I'm happy to change this rule if enough people would like me to.

Ah yes, that time of the year I always look forward to. @Matt N's famous Speed Build contest!

As with others, I'm also extremely busy again this winter. Christmas in retail coming up, a house move, and no fewer that 4 academic assignments due in January. I'll try my best but may be absent most weeks. But count me in.

I think that's fair Matt. The coaster building in 2 looks to be far more refined, so I think it would give an unfair advantage. I'm not sure whether to pre-order or wait for the release of the physical disk myself. As you know, I like to have hard copies of games and we could be looking at many months for a physical release. I'm sure some just won't have the spare cash to purchase right away either.

Oh no it isn't!......(Sorry, I couldn't help myself).

Just to let everybody know, today is your last chance to join before I drop Round 1. It’s coming in around 17 hours, so if your name isn’t in the list above and you want to join in before Round 1 begins, please post in this thread during the course of today.

Week 1 Weekly Digest (9th-15th November 2024)
OK folks; the 2024/25 contest has now begun! Let's get straight into the nitty gritty of the Round 1 brief, shall we?
Round 1 Building
It's time to reveal the first round of the competition! The brief for Round 1 is... Rumba Rapids Replacement at Thorpe Park! The context for the round is as follows:
With rapids rides in the UK becoming ever more contentious in terms of both safety and running costs, Thorpe Park have decided to make the tough decision to retire Rumba Rapids. And with them being the home of feel-good thrills, they think that a new roller coaster would be just the ticket to replace it, and they've asked you to come and build it for them! As Thorpe Park is already home to lots of big thrill coasters, however, the park have requested that you design it as more of a starter thrill coaster rather than their biggest, baddest thing. They also want something long to combat the criticism that Thorpe Park is full of overly short coasters, particularly after the flack that Hyperia received for its brevity. But other than that, the sky's the limit! What will you come up with?
The constraints for the round are as follows:
  • Maximum Footprint 122m*108m/400ft*354ft
  • Maximum Height 100ft/30m
  • Minimum Length 3,000ft/914m
  • No Inversions
For some context, the area of Thorpe Park we're working with here is as follows:
Rumba-Rapids-Plot.png

To apply the footprint constraints, I would recommend using the Scenario Editor to make yourself a park template that allows you to enforce the constraints.

However, if you find yourself unable to do this, I have created a Steam Workshop park template with the footprint constraints pre-imposed, which you can download here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3334592703

For console users, I would recommend setting out the footprint constraints using wall pieces or path pieces to build yourself an "area" to work within. Path and wall pieces are typically 4m in length, for reference. I know it's not ideal, but it's unfortunately the best I can recommend given that neither Scenario Editor nor Steam Workshop are available on console... sorry for the inconvenience, folks.

To submit, please build your submission, film a POV and/or off-ride shots of it, and post the video(s) in this thread. You can briefly describe your ride if you wish. YouTube is the website I'd recommend for uploading videos to, as this would integrate best with the Google Form when it comes to voting, but if you want to upload your video(s) using a different method, then that's also fine. If you have any issues with recording or uploading your video(s), please don't hesitate to contact me. I will try my best to assist you.

May I once again emphasise that this is a coaster layout building contest. By all means add some light theming and landscaping if you wish, but the coaster layout should ideally be the focus. Quality of coaster layout is pretty much the be all and end all here; heavy theming won't gain you any points, and no theming won't lose you any points.

The submission deadline for Round 1 is Friday 15th November 2024 at 11:45pm. If you struggle for time and would like me to extend the deadline, please PM me or request an extension in this thread before the deadline. If you do not make contact with me and ask for an extension, I will assume that you simply do not want to compete in this round and move on after the posted deadline.

I think that's all I need to cover for Week 1. Good luck with Round 1, folks! If you have any questions or concerns about the round, please don't hesitate to contact me. I am always more than happy to help.

Get building, everybody!

My Round 1 submission is here! Say hello to... Calypso, a GCI wooden coaster (it would seem like many of us had the same train of thought here!):
Calypso-Overview.png

The ride stats are as follows:
  • Name: Calypso
  • Manufacturer: Great Coasters International
  • Model: Wooden Coaster (Custom)
  • Height: 90ft/27m
  • Speed: 48mph/77kph
  • Length: 3,020ft/920m
  • Inversions: 0
  • Airtime Moments: 8
  • Maximum Positive G-Force: 3G (overall), 2.9G (heatmap)
  • Maximum Negative G-Force: -1.5G (overall), -0.7G (heatmap)
  • Trains: 2 trains of 12 cars/24 riders
  • Throughput: 836pph (~35 trains per hour, 1 train every ~1m 43s)
If you'd like to play with Calypso for yourself, here's the Steam Workshop link you can download it from: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3363612137

So, that's Calypso, my Round 1 submission! I know it's not my greatest submission ever, and I admit in hindsight that I may have been a tad ambitious in terms of scale for the plot, but I hope you all like it nonetheless!

Not like me to be first, but here it is.

Ribena Rumba Ricket. Kind-of-dueling GCI woodie. Not at all short.

Runs 5 trains. 17 airtime moments according to the game stats.

Awesome submission @Matt.GC! Your ride is packed full of airtime, and I also think you’ve pulled off the duelling feature really well!
My week 1 entry: Wild Timber

From: https://youtu.be/8PFbK6WtfIY

Manufacturer: GCI
Model: Custom
Max Height: 81ft
Speed: 48mph
Length: 3006ft
Inversions: 0
Airtime Count: 8
Max Vertical Gs: 4.87g
Max Lateral Gs: 1.92g
Min Vertical Gs: -1.10g

Great submission @tactic! Your ride has quite a bit of airtime, and it looks like a very realistic GCI in terms of how it twists and swoops around!

Nice submission @Thameslink Rail! A Maurer spinning coaster is a unique response to the brief, and your ride certainly looks like it delivers on the spinning aspect well!

For everybody else, I just thought I’d remind you that we are now over halfway through the building stage of round 1. You have about 3 days remaining until the deadline.

There have been 4 submissions so far, including my own. There’s still plenty of time (the deadline is Friday 15th November 2024 at 11:45pm), but if you think you will need more time, please inform me prior to the deadline so that I can extend the deadline accordingly. If you do not get into contact with me either in this thread or via PM to request a deadline extension, I will assume that you’re OK forfeiting this round and move on.
