TST Film Review Thread

Train Dreams

Seemingly dumped onto Netflix last week with zero fanfare. However its very much being talked up as an awards contender.

It's that curious time of year in which Netflix is desperately attempting to secure prestige awards nominations, suddenly swapping out 'Is It Cake?' for this and Richard Linklater's 'Nouvelle Vague' or Seymour Hersh's upcoming 'Cover Up' doc on political corruption.

It's a pain as they get such a limited theatrical release. The new Knives Out/Benoit Blanc film is out now but not at my local cinema which I pay for an annual pass to see everything, so if I want to see it I'll need to pay another cinema.

Zootopia/Zootropolis 2

Taking place shortly after the events of the first time this sees Hopps and Wilde back in action.

Again a really fantastic bit of world building, and I really liked the new character Gary The Snake, the first to visit the town in 100 years.

It's very fast paced and filled with jokes but I felt it could've done with slowing down at times to develop character a bit more.

A slight step down from the original but still lots to enjoy. I had an absolute ball with some of the film references they'd scattered across the film.

A second trip to the cinema for me today...

 Christy

The Sydney Sweeney boxing biopic about women's boxing pioneer Christy Martin.

At parts its very by the numbers sports film however the transformation Sweeney puts herself through (in the trailers I didn't realise it was her) as the film unfolds over 20 years, and the abusive relationship with her husband/coach/manager Jim. Makes it stand above similar films.

I was thinking about seeing it but it was withdrawn from many cinemas including my local at short notice (despite the trailer being shown quite regularly for the last month)

Zootopia/Zootropolis 2 is very fun, and the animation is mostly beautiful. I really liked the first one, and I think that the second one matches it. However, I am not the biggest fan of the dialogue.
7.6/10.

Only one screening on yesterday when I saw it.

Wouldn't be surprised if after it did really badly in America its been pulled. Plus cinemas probably want more screens full of people watching Zootropolis 2 and Wicked For Good.

Eternity

Headed to a preview screening tonight and I do love a high concept movie.

The film starts with married for 65 years couple Larry and Joan going to a gender reveal party, unfortunately Larry dies and winds up in the afterlife were he has to decide were to spend his eternity. He's now reverted to an age at which he was happiest and is played by Miles Teller.

Shortly after Joan dies of cancer and the two are quickly re-united with Joan now played by Elizabeth Olsen. However things take a turn when Joan's first husband Luke a soldier who died in a war and had waited 67 years for the chance to spend eternity with her.

What follows is an amazingly funny and inventive film about (after) life and death and the choices the characters made.

Great support from Da'vine Joy Randolph as well as Larrys afterlife co-ordinator.

All these wonderful movie reviews I'm hearing is motivating me to go and see some more things. Feels like all I'm going to see are things with some kind of IP connection.. which I've complained about, and ironically, are a perpetrator of.
God, I've got to make a backlog of movies to see with my friends before they drag me out to see that new Mario movie or whatever.. eugh. I wonder if my cinema has some season tickety thing.

Odeon, Everyman, Picturehouse and Cineworld do, Vue don't (they tend to have cheaper single tickets)
Yeah I've had Odeon Limitless in the past and currently have a Cineworld Unlimited card. Picturehouse do memberships as well which get you a few free tickets and money off more tickets.

Ended up going to watch It's A Wonderful Life tonight, such an amazing film. Gets better every time I see it.

Another sort of re-release for me last night with Kill Bill - The Whole Bloody Affair

Was originally screened in 2006 in a few selected cinemas but this is the first time its gotten a larger roll out.

It collects Part 1 and 2 together (with a 10 minute intermission) re-inserting more violence, a longer animated sequence, and a few other bits. Rightly getting an 18 certificate.

Watching it altogether makes it a greater experience, the action sequences are so well done and still look amazing. I'd also forgotten how much humour the film has throughout both parts. Uma Thurman is tremendous throughout and runs through every emotional you could conceive of.
