UK politics general discussion

Sunak has finally sacked Cruella Braverman.

Should never have gotten back into the role in the first place, but he was desperate for the support of the hard right. And her comments last week made her position untenable.

Now we await the next useless berk to be given a major cabinet role.

So if there hadn't been a riot on Saturday, she'd still be there. Sunak was completely comfortable with her comments prior to that, he's just saving face.

He could have sacked her last week after her article was published, and made himself actually look decisive for once. Instead he's done the same as he did for Nadhim Zahawi, Dominic Raab, and Gavin Williamson, and stretched it out until their positions became untenable (even the latter two resigned before they could be sacked).

It takes a lot to do this, but somehow, Cruella Braverman has managed it.

She's made Priti Patel look like Dolly Parton in comparison.

Good. What she said was outrageous.

If she actually believes that then she does not have any idea of how policing actually works, which is probably the case.

And even if she does believe that she is in a unique position to make change from the inside, but instead uses her position to publicly undermine the people charged with keeping her and the rest of the country safe the day before huge demonstrates that were always going to be close to imposible to manage. Giving a feeling of legitimacy to an angry mob at that time, it's akin to Trumps comments before the storming of Congress. It is going to fire up that mob.

The damage caused, the injuries to police officers and public, that can been accredited to her. And the effects won't be gone with her exit, the far right will be feeding off of this for years to come, as proof of conspiracy and legitimacy to their aims. Like the financial damage Raab caused, the damage to society she has caused will be hitting us for years.

Quick! Get another barrel to scrape. What a strange strange appointment, but nothing shocks me with this shambles of a government anymore.

I thought you had to be a sitting MP to be in the Cabinet? Cameron hasn’t been a sitting MP since he resigned in 2016, to my knowledge.

You have to be sitting in the Commons or the Lords. It's unusual in relative modern terms, but not unheard of. Mandelson did it for Brown, as an example.

Cameron has been accelerated and given a life peerage this morning, so he can sit in the Lords and be Foreign Secretary.

Edit: Here's the Wiki entry as a source. Can't link to the Gov.uk entry at the moment as it's being updated and not available, funnily enough. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabin...hosen from members, the past for short periods.

Then: Leaves EU to ‘take back control from unelected officials’.

Now: Appoints an unelected official as foreign secretary.
Slight edit for you. An unelected official, serving as prime minister, appoints an unelected official to serve as foreign secretary.

I'll concede that Sunak was elected by his constituency as an MP, but he was certainly not elected by his party to serve as leader and thus PM.

I guess the real question is why David Cameron would even want to come back?
Whatever you think of him it’s some return to frontline politics.

I’m surprised there actually found him to ask him back. Since Brexit the guy seemed to vanish off the face of the earth

Wow, the government really is in 'Special Measures'. John Major is currently being groomed with a pack of Werther's Originals to come back as Chancellor and Margret Thatchers brain floating in a jar is about to named as party chairman. Probably.

The government is limping through and has been barely functioning for some time now. Sunak is wounded and weak. We really need an election, the country deserves better than this.
