Press release - Walibi invests more than 100 million euros
Thursday 22 June 2017 - On the occasion of the first anniversary of PULSAR, Walibi raises a corner of the veil on his very ambitious plan of transformations, unequaled in Belgium. More than 100 million euros will be invested in the Wavrian park, starting next year. The aim is to reconfigure the site, turn it into a THE reference to Belgian amusement parks targeting all ages.

What can we expect in the next few years? First, to new attractions every year, but also, to a new thematization of each area of the park. At the end of these historical changes, 75% of the surface of Walibi will be metamorphosed.

ABOUT WALIBI BELGIUM

A pioneer in the theme parks sector, Walibi was born 42 years ago in Wavre and welcomes about 1.3 million visitors a year. There are three Walibi parks: Walibi Belgium, Walibi Rhône-Alpes (France) and Walibi Holland (Netherlands). The three Walibi parks have been part of the Compagnie des Alpes Group since 2006.

Fantastic stuff to see really, adding AND refreshing entire areas simultaneously...

Hopefully Walibi keep at it...
 
Fantastic news! As much as I enjoyed the park, some of the cracks were really quite apparent. These plans will hopefully give the park a new lease of life.

I wonder if they'll be replacing Cobra's trains as part of the refurb, ala Speed of Sound. It was far from enjoyable when I rode it last September!
 
Wow, this is all seriously impressive stuff. I have never visited the park but it sounds like it will be a totally difference experience in 2021 compared to how it is now.

Mega coaster from Intamin or Mack please! Though I would not say no to a new Vekoma.

Yeah S.O.S abbreviated rather aptly is not a fun ride... Especially when I rode it a few weeks ago as Speed of Silence...

Speed of Sound without the music (which really made it a party experience on last year's road trip) would still be massively better than Cobra. It's awful. In fact, the park is awful. How has it been allowed to fall so far behind the experience offered by (most of) Walibi Holland?
 
Locals pretty much prohibit them from building anything major/decent for one, and wouldn't be surprised if the disaster of Vertigo and the rebranding kinda stopped much in the investment department...

It's a decent enough park, just lacks that high quality attraction(s) to really drive it forward...

There are rumours that Vekoma, Mack and B&M have all been asked to design a coaster, one of which will be the final product.

With the recent works between the walibi parks and Mack with Pulsar and Lost Gravity surely they must be the front runner for this project? I would be happy with any of these three companies getting it and would most like to see Vekoma get the chance to build their first hyper coaster.
 
Walibi Belgium released more information about their redevelopment plans yesterday.
They will be creating multiple themed areas, retheming rides, a new entrance, refurbishing and expanding their water park etc.
But the main things are:

2018 will see the addition of a Gerstlauer Bobsled coaster.
In 2019 they are adding a new dark ride.

The interactive dark ride will open in the spring of 2019 in the Ali Baba section of the park. Walibi will get the first ever Erratic® attraction from Alterface in collaboration with ETF Ride Systems.

Alterface unveiled at the EAS conference that they are working with ETF Ride Systems for this brand new attraction. So, the park will get a second attraction with trackless vehicles after the successful dark ride Challenge of Tutankhamon.

This new concept of Alterface has got a trademark called Erratic® ride. Freely translated "erratic" means "moves in an unexpected way", and that is exactly the idea of this new attraction. Guests will board a trackless vehicle and, depending on the settings of the attraction, will drive in certain rooms. This vehicle system is just known from Challenge of Tutankhamon, but also from Ratatouille at Disneyland Paris and Symbolica at Efteling. Unlike those attractions, there is no fixed course and you may experience another course when you re-ride the attraction (more than the three tours of Symbolica). For example, the transition is not just turning to the next scene, but they can let the vehicles do certain actions like fast-rotating.

The system can be used to offer a nice attraction on a limited area. For example, you can use dead-end and go in many directions instead of driving in one direction. By way of illustration, we can take the Ratatouille attraction. In one of the later parts of the attraction, the vehicles suddenly go into a separate dome for a scene and thus the three vehicles are split. Then they all drive together to the end. Thus, with this system, it is possible, for example, to drive back one of the vehicles, let one move forward and the last one just changes in the dome. This is to prove that the park itself can choose how they want to fill in the ride. In fact, there is also a possibility to let visitors choose their own route. For example, visitors who get better scores can do faster and more scenes than others who need more time.

The challenge here is the story of the attraction. Inventors will have to think about how they can use the technology and provide beautiful transitions between the scenes. For example, do you want to return to a scene you have previously done? Do you let the vehicles meet each other, or not? Alterface therefore offers its own IP: Popcorn Revenge. The story has not yet been fully elaborated and there are still no images available but the base is there; As a visitor you go to the movie and want to eat popcorn, but the popcorn are done with being eaten. They escape and prefer to play in the movies themselves. To collect them back: the super hero popcorn, the pirate popcorn, the magician popcorn ... What it all looks like is not known yet, but it will be based on existing and well-known movie scenes. Effects will be done with video mapping but also screens, real-world decors, lighting effects, etc. The shooting system is not confirmed yet. On the concept art, we already see that there are seven different rooms next to the station building. There is enough time to 2019 to finalize everything, but this first glance promises a unique attraction for Walibi Belgium.

They will also be adding a Zeizer kiddie coaster in 2019.

In 2020 a Mack Twist n' Splash and Gerstlauer Sky Fly will be added.
And lastly in 2021 Walibi Belgium will be building a mega coaster. The plans for which are below.

Are Walibi using the Popcorn’s Revenge theme for the trackless dark ride or is that just one invented by Alterface? If they are using it, then it looks like a very cool and unique theme.
 
Sounds like an Alterface theme, which is disappointing given Walibi's unique (recent) themes are part of the charm that has won a few fans over the last couple of years...

Especially given the scope of potential an Ali Baba/Arabian Nights theme could provide for something like this...

Tis also strange given the existence of Challenge of Tut, which is one of the best interactive dark rides around...

Finally, be interesting to see who makes the Mega Coaster, given the options now consist of Mack, B&M, Intamin and Vekoma; and getting an Intamin would be the most disappointing choice...

No manufacturer has been announced yet. An official announcement is expected soon by the park's fans. However it is strongly rumoured to be Intamin.
 
Wouldn't surprise me to see this be a Mack hypercoaster a la DC Rivals/Flash because Compagnie des Alpes has worked with Mack a lot lately. But what I'd like to see is a B&M hyper. Because the only B&M hyper I've ever ridden (Mako) instantly became my number 1 roller coaster. Every park needs a Mako. Well, apart from the parks that already have B&M hypers.
 
These developments all look very exciting and having just visited Walibi Holland, which I think is a fantastic park, I cannot wait to see how things materialise!

The layout of that hyper coaster looks more Intamin or Vekoma than B&M or Mack to me.
