WDW Animal Kingdom: General Discussion

Edit: sorry, I misread your post Rob. I thought you said, 'What event is that?'

That's not an event, it's a permant show in the Rivers of Light Theatre called KiteTails. Disney have been doing quite a bit of cost cutting recently, particularly in light of the Covid pandemic. It's not entirely surprising. There were a lot of cutbacks in the early 2000s after the Twin Towers attacks. Presumably the thinking here is twofold. This is clearly a cheaper show than Rivers of Light, and it's also a daytime show, so they don't need to open the park until later in the evening when it's got dark.

Disney have announced what’s coming up, although there are no timescales so as it’s Disney this may not even happen! But they are planning to change Dinoland to a South American land with a combination of Encanto and Indiana Jones. It’s tough to be a Bug will change to a Zootopia film as well.

I much prefer this plan to last years proposal of Moana / Zootopia. The rest of the park (Pandora excluded) is themed around parts of the world, so a new area grounded in a geographical reality is a good move, and the IP intervention looks sympathetic to that vision. I really hope they include new animal enclosures

My initial reaction to hearing this was that it's no better then the previous announcement as it's still am attempt to shoehorn IPs into a park that (Pandora aside) does very well out of telling original stories.
However seeing them both tied to a South America land, without the IPs being front and center is far better than before.
+ Enchanto is one of my favorite films and it's going to be in one of my favourite parks.
+ Up is set in South America, which gives that film a proper home in the park as well.

Edit: forgot to mention Zootopia. Not as keen on that, as it makes no sense inside the Tree of Life.
Long term I could see it as an offshoot area of Animal Kingdom, maybe as a replacement for Rafiki's Planet Watch. But I'm glad it's not part of the strange half and half land anymore.

Be a real shame to see Dinosaur go, such a brilliant dark ride. Missed it on my recent trip and with me not likely to return for another 5+ years, I'm regretting not getting a last ride in now (assuming all of the above happens).

At least Zootopia as a film in the tree means it’s a film starring talking animals replacing a film starring talking bugs. Yes Zootopia is set in a different universe really but this feels a pretty reasonable way to replace an aging attraction with something newer.

As a stop gap attraction I get it. But Zootopia is an entire city for all sizes of animals. The tree of life theatre is very specifically the roots of a giant tree.
If it's a minor film change with a few different animatronics I'd be happy with that. But like Hyperspace Mountain in Paris I'd like it to leave enough of the original intact that A full refurbishment one day is still an option.

Really this should be the parks signiture mission statement ride as it's at the very centre. Even Tough to be a Bug wasn't a great execution of this.
Consider The Great Movie Ride (Or now Mickeys) at the heart of Hollywood Studios, or Spaceship Earth at the entrance to EPCOT. Neither are the headline rides of the park but the ones that best captured the feel of the park.

But it’s just the tree of life theatre, I don’t think the venue was really designed with Bugs Life in mind really.

Are Disney the only company that don't realise how much little kids love dinosaurs?

Though I did watch the film Dinosaur last week (good old disniversity podcast) and thought it was abysmal.

Have you ridden the ride at Animal Kingdom? Is definitely not for little kids!

Losing Dinosaur will be a real shame, it is such a good dark ride! The ride system will almost certainly be retained, I wonder if that might be turned in to an Indiana Jones ride with Encanto being used for a new attraction.

Animal Kingdom announcements from D23

Indiana Jones attraction (finally) confirmed

Probably one of the least surprising pieces of theme park news that feels like it’s been a long time coming, Indy is coming to Animal Kingdom.

The attraction will form part of the new Tropical Americas area, set to replace Dinoland USA.

As you can probably tell from the above image, this looks set to replace Dinosaur (RIP. Forever in our hearts 🕊️). However, Disney have stated that this will be a different experience to Temple of the Forbidden Eye over at Disneyland, suggesting that whilst the ride system looks set to remain (based on the concept art), it will have a different storyline and set pieces to the existing Indy dark rides.

Given this ride will sit in the new Americas area, it would make sense that it has a theme related to that geographical region.

Work begins later this year, so get your last rides on a Time Rover in while you can!

Encanto dark ride

IMG_1253.jpeg

Indy will be complimented by a new dark ride themed to Encanto. Some may remember this concept was touted at the last D23, though it seemed like it could be on the cards for either MK or AK. It has now been confirmed that this will be part of the new area set to replace Dinoland USA at Animal Kingdom.

The ride will see guests arriving at the family home on the day that Antonio, the youngest character in the film, receives his gift of talking to animals. I think this would suggest that the ride is going to pre-date the film but I’m not sure?..

IMG_1254.jpeg

All that has been said about the actual ride system is that guests will travel on pieces of enchanted furniture from around the house, so I’d expect some sort of straightforward trackless dark ride, probably with the motion bases like Ratatouille has. Seeing how the Rat ride system is now established in Epcot this would also tie in with how Disney seem to like having attractions that share components and bases to streamline maintenance (see Runaway Railway and Rise of the Resistance). Maybe they could end up using the RRR/Rise platform, but it would probably be overkill for an attraction of this scale, and challenging to present the vehicles as pieces of furniture.

The ride is scheduled to open in 2027 alongside the new themed area.

New Tropical Americas area “Pueblo Esperanza“

IMG_1251.jpeg

AK lovers like me will probably be relieved to hear that the area sounds (and looks) like it will by quite sympathetic to the current areas of the park, going for a more authentic and natural appearance, hopefully with the IPs kept inside of the attractions themselves.

The area will also include new dining options, the usual amenities, and a carousel, presumably going roughly where Triceratops Spin currently sits.

Work is set to begin later this year, completing in 2027.

Zootopia Better Together

Another one that was discussed previously and now confirmed is a Zootopia attraction. This will replace It’s Tough To Be A Bug beneath the Tree of Life (for those unfamiliar with it, this is a 4D cinema show).

Although this won’t be the major dark ride we’ve seen in Shanghai, it looks set to at least use some parts from it, with at least one animatronic confirmed.

Personally, I’m glad they’ve gone down this route with this one. As cool as the Zootopia ride over in Shanghai looks, it has no place in Animal Kingdom if you ask me. It’d simply be too cartoony and animated. Keeping Zootopia confirmed to the Tree of Life theatre will ensure it has a presence in the park without being intrusive (as is the case with It’s Tough To Be A Bug).

The new attraction is set to open in winter 2025.

That's also when I went, so I also feel the same.
However as a whole the tropical America's area is a big improvement.

The only minor thing is it might have been nice to have kept the fossil dig site play area thing. I don't have kids so never been in there myself, but space for kids to run about and do things seems like a good thing.
