ridecount - Into The Future!

I can't find the "my top ride/ parks" lists is that because it's only the beta, looks much better, and yay I'm in first place on all the leader boards.

Aesthetically, this is such a beautiful and vast improvement. I'd love to see the TowersStreet website fall in line with the design of the new ridecount as that too would be a tremendous improvement.

Oh, and I do like this little graphic too ;) :

Something I've noticed from looking over my old trips is that since the changeover, a fair few of my rides on X were removed from the reports. I've since re-added them, but it seems strange.

From what I can see here you seem to have managed to count X twice, as both it's new and old form :p

Remember that when rides have any significant changes we discontinue it's old form and it goes under 'Removed Attractions' with a note explaining what became of it, and a new entry is then created under the new name :)

In relation to the above question, why was sonic spinball entered as a new ride when it was re-themed from spinball whizzer but when Rita was re-themed from Rita QOS it was kept under the same ride?

Can't speak for Joel and Ian but I would presume it would be because Sonic received a rather big theme change (in terms of an IP being used) whereas Rita really just lost it's 'tagline' so to speak.

Whilst they both had theme changes, Sonic was rather more substantial due to the IP (although the idea of pinball was the same) whereas Rita is essentially the same ride minus the tagline and plus some twigs.

I'm sure Joel and Ian can shed better light though :)

Pretty much what Scott's said :p

Sonic was a fairly large change, as was X as the ride itself was reversed to change the experience. Rita on the other hand merely dropped its tagline from the name. The changes made were fairly minimal by comparison.

I'm really confused about something.

Is there a way to view which rides are at the parks on ride count without creating a new trip? I wanted to see whether Carnival had been removed from AT seasonal attractions and if Scary Tales had been added. I also don't see where I should go to report an attraction which should or shouldn't be on there.

To put it simply, no there is not.

Ridecount does rely on users reporting attractions, wether they're new, removed, or altered. If no one is visiting a park or riding an attraction this information does not get updated, simply because it increases the demand on us having to constantly research and alter attractions. Part of the new site remit was to make it more sustainable so that the users and community can do these things. I don't know what ride Great and Powerful Peoples Park in Korea has opened this year, but someone who has ridden will!

In my eyes, if no one is visiting and no one is tracking then it's not doing any harm by being there. Obviously when people do want to track it may present a problem, which is why we have the in-line reporting system to flag up attractions with issues. Generally speaking though if no one has reported an alteration then it would suggest no one is looking. In which case, who are we updating for really? :p

Similarly, I would argue that adding new attractions without wanting to count them is pointless. All its going to do is add more information to the database which is not being used by anyone, creating clutter. You could say Ridecount works on a supply to demand basis. Unless there is call for a change why make it?

Nothing to say on the thread of use, but that comment could not go without recognition for absolute brilliance :D

Impressed with the updates to ridecount that have occurred over this close season - I think it's a shame to have taken away the ability to see all rides / parks ranked in order of laps / visits though (you can now only view your top 10 via the dashboard).

A very geeky feature that I'd love to see added is the ability to view most ridden rides / visited parks by year as well. Particularly with Covid, for example, I'd be interested to see how that has changed what rides I've been riding most frequently. That's very geeky indeed though and I'd imagine would be a much more difficult feature to implement.

Hey D4n,

Woah this is an old thread you’ve dug up here, but I got a notification nonetheless for your reply!

And thanks for the feedback - we actually rebuilt the whole backend of the site from scratch over the lockdown period, as the previous site was based on some very old tech.

We’ve still got a number of features planned for the site now we are on a much newer a flexible platform, and building the stats to be way more comprehensive than before is part of that - we’re also bringing back the park and attraction explorer in a future phase too so you’ll be able to see the most popular parks and attractions overall.

I’m not sure exactly which stats you mean are missing there - did you mean the personal listing of your top parks and attractions overall? Just trying to think as we kept everything from the old site except the overall user leaderboard as it was generally just dominated by the same few people which just made people feel like they could never achieve the leaderboard especially if they joined the site recently, so we changed it to a monthly leaderboard instead.

The current phase of work is all around backend quality improvements to handle suggestions and changes easier (so we don’t fall behind with all the attractions changing around the world!) and allow easier editing of the database of attractions by the ridecount team, and you can keep track of all these changes we’re making via the changelog on the site at https://ridecount.com/about/changelog

Thanks again for the feedback though, and hope you find the upcoming changes useful.

Hi everyone! Just a quick post to say that we're currently in the process of updating all the parks and attractions currently on ridecount. This is a job which is long overdue, and having already worked through over 1100 of your suggestions (attractions which would have appeared as "unapproved") from the last 6 years or so, we're now at a point where we're generally tidying it all up. This means merging duplicate rides, making sure the SPG is correct according to each park's attractions list on their websites, making sure each ride's name is in the local language and having the english translation in the notes, etc, etc etc. Therefore, the more eagle-eyed of you might notice some unexpected changes to your trips or stats.

It's a slow process, due to the fact that we've nearly 200 parks to work through, but it's simply not something we can keep on top of for ever as a result of the ever changing theme park industry (we've no idea when a random kids ride in a lesser-visited theme park closes, for example!) As a result, going forwards, we're very much relying on the ridecount membership suggesting new attractions at parks, suggesting new parks when that feature is ready, and reporting "problems" on existing rides if you see one. @Joel's done a great job of making this really easy to do for both users and us as administrators, so in theory there won't be much of a delay before your suggestions are approved!

Thanks so much! :D

I never thought I would see the day, what happens to our counts if you delete a ride suggestion that I’ve used, for example there’s more than one flight of passage waiting for approval and I’ve mistakenly used 2 of them, will I lose count of the one you get ride of?

When there are duplicate entries for an attraction and we’re made aware of them our system merges them together, so your count will be unaffected. You’ll simply see the number move from “Avatar” to “Avatar Flight of Passage”. If you have tracked rides on both in the past they’ll simply combine together and give you a new total.

The only time generally speaking we would look to remove an attraction without replacement would be for attractions which simply aren’t one (E.G. someone suggesting a park bench is an attraction (yes, it has happened in the past…)). However, we know that those are very infrequent, and also that if something really daft is submitted, it’s very unlikely other users will track against it.

We’re working on ways to try and reduce the chance of duplicate attractions being created (checking for similar names and flagging this to the user before they hit save, etc.), though undoubtedly there will always be cases where things slip through the net!

I have started to add new, yet-to-be-listed parks on ridecount. As a starter for 10, here are those I've quickly added in this evening, which were all suggested in our member feedback and absolutely nothing at all to do with my holidays over the past few years...

UK

Dreamland Margate
Robin Hoods Wheelgate
South Pier (Blackpool)
Twinlakes

Netherlands
Attractiepark Slagharen
Attractiepark de Waarbeek
DippieDoe
Preston Palace

France
Le Jardin d'Acclimatation
Puy du Fou
Walibi Rhône Alpes
Parc d'Attractions de Chamonix

Switzerland
Moléson

At some point soon, there will be a lovely and simple way for you to suggest your own parks to ridecount, however in the meantime, don't hesitate to drop me a private message on here, or respond to this thread, and we'll get them updated ASAP. If the list above is useful for you all to be logging past trips, I'll continue to update this thread when I add more parks.

Cheers!

Rainbow Park, Hunstanton
Clacton Pier
West Sands Fun Fair (It's permanent)
Clarence Pier
South Shore Pier
Funder Park, Dawlish Warren
Treasure Island, Stourport
Cannon Hill Park

Definitely not related to a recent trip at all
