2016: Air - Re-theme to VR Coaster - Galactica

I actually love how much people love to hate the Air Tunnel. it really makes my day.

For me Air was a lot like Smiler, style over substance. Fitting something into a space which from the ground looked impressive but just didn't deliver.

The one thing Air has that does excite me overtime i go on it is seeing the people before me "assume the position"
and if the re-theme is anything to go by, we won't be seeing that now.

Hopefully its going to be worth it and maybe the station and the tunnel is in pitch black with some impressive lights.

I'm all in favour of the fast running lights like on a runway.

Getting Airs theme right would be easy. You base the station aesthetic on Disney's Soarin, the ride on Manta (aka Airs original plans that Manta actually implemented years later) and rework the queue into a museum of flight.

The ride now has a perfect 3 act structure: discovery, the marvel of take-off and the adventure of flying.

I've always loved Air as a concept because combining the above 3 you've got a dream ride. But none of them were ever done properly. I'd given up hope they'd ever go back to the ride so this news is a real shock. Trouble is its a very mixed bag. The new restaurant sounds brilliant. The station and theme additions could be great but that all depends on the execution... The photo point will probably be garbage but if people are fool enough to pay for them go capitalism!
 
Just noticed the new fencing additions on Air in the currently very out of place blue colour.

I wonder if this is an indication of a new colour scheme along with the new features.

Or just a case of Towers using up a few old blue tins of paint from Sonic a few years ago

I don't think this is hinting at a retheme, just health and safety gone mental.
 
So Alton Towers now have something up on their website regarding 2016.

"In 2016 the future is here…prepare for a new flight #WatchThisSpace #ATR2016"

Clearly relating to the planned Air changes, the modified Alton Towers logo is great. "#WatchThisSpace" is darn right awful though!

Could that be an indication to a space theme maybe?

The tunnel will answer to us if this project was worth the effort.
 
Maybe I'm just a cynic but I fully expect it to be an IP or sponsorship, surely that is the only reason Merlin would go back to improve an existing ride?
