2016: Air - Re-theme to VR Coaster - Galactica

I just had a go on the VR goggles for no more than 3 mins. Now they're off I wanna throw up.

Not very realistic... I am even more sceptical now having tried this.

I will be the first to admit if I am wrong but I will be very surprised if this lasts longer than one season.

It's a bit hard to compare the two things though is it not?

You would have been stationary using whatever you did on your iPhone as opposed to moving on Galactica. Equally we don't know the quality of the graphics and so on in Galactica so it is hard to write VR off as 'not very realistic' too.

What I was getting at was its clearly a flat screen in front of you and that it's not very immersive.

Yes I was stationary.

But I know what I have just experienced... By using a phone... The same technology.

But perhaps it doesn't feel immersive because you're stationary. The movement might well be the key to unlocking the potential a bit more. After all, the usage of it at EP has had positive reviews.

It's hard to judge anyway as all these VR things seem to use different tech.

Well when I did Alpenexpress VR at EP you wouldn't have known there was a flat screen/phone right in front of your eyes, stationary or when moving. And it was certainly very immersive, more so than I imagined. I did not think it would work at all and said as much beforehand but it was brilliant. Admittedly Towers are not using VR Coaster for theirs so I will have to wait and see how it compares.

Please don't go and judge Galactica based on something you have tried in your own home! Give it a chance at least, VR on a coaster can be a lot of fun.

I'm still not overly keen on the whole idea and don't think it will be a long term innovation in the industry but it is something that is worth trying out and being open minded about.

:)

another problem with it, that I've just thought of, is that unlike a motion simulator, which can be stopped at any point mid-ride, Air (sorry, Galactica!) can only be stopped on the lift hill and the brake sections, so if someone really doesn't like it, or feels unwell (which will probably be a lot more often with the VR), they won't be able to get off straight away. I'm expecting the nausea factor to increase hugely (the cleaners and first aid staff will probably have their work cut out!).

Like I said I will be the first to admit I was wrong.

But in my opinion I'm not to optimistic.

Calm down.

EDIT: And unlike most I am really looking forward to the re-theme and trying out the VR, because I though air was a waste of space.

I'm just not optimistic in this lasting long at the park.

Close your eyes? :p

If AT's facebook is anything to go by, they aren't expecting there to be a nausea factor. I hope this is just marketing, saying it won't have any issue, rather than them genuinely believing this (again, if their Facebook is anything to go by, it's not the most reliable at the best of times)

surely closing your eyes would make it worse? once, when i was waiting for Maelstrom (at Drayton Manor) to start, i heard one of the operators telling a nervous rider that closing their eyes would make it worse- the best thing to do being keeping their eyes open. i know that Maelstrom is a flat ride, not a roller coaster, but still, it's an example.

Closing your eyes on a simulator works on the nausea front. So I think closing them to stop the nausea, but will be like a dark ride, won't know when any things going to happen.

Maybe that's what they're doing... They are really all eye masks and that bag in front is a pouch for a blanket. The worlds first have a nap coaster.

Never understood people who close their eyes on rides. Not being able to see where you are moving is a sure way to get ill. But then, so it strapping an oversized phone to your face.
yeah, closing your eyes on a ride will make the experience worse than if you have your eyes open, and possibly more nauseating too.

BWAHAHAHAHA! Great image, but physics doesn't work that way. It'd go back in the face of the person it came from. The people either side of them may get some splashing, but that's all.

even when the unwell person is facing down at the highest point?

Dynamic of movement will have an involvement in how the biological matter acts when it leaves the body. Some Factors involved are,
Rotation of train.
Direction of train.
Force of matter leaving body.
Speed of train.
Direction and speed of airflow.
Consistiancy of ejected matter.
Location of ejection orifice in relation to the train.
