Thorpe Park 2017: DBGT: Rise of The Demon

To be fair you are rather in the minority of that, and quite frankly it's a brave thing to say :p

I have no issues with people looking forward to this ride. Fair play, each to their own and what not. It's just I hate when it people play the "enthusiasts moan about everything card" to people who aren't. It doesn't appeal to me and stated my reasons for it, and that's that.

In all fairness when you state "I'm deciding the ride is crap" that doesn't insinuate an opinion. When someone decides on something it means they've made their mind up. I have no issue with your views on the ride, but assuming what the general public thinks about it is a little presumptuous.

It's not a bad thing lowering expections for something as it's always much nicer to be suprised than let down due to over-hype. Derren Brown is a popular public figure and whilst Thorpe have opted for a new trend of IP-ing everything new, there must be an interest in these rides if they keep producing them. Thorpe were in dire need of a dark ride and I hope this will fill that void, and excecuted well. :)

I can't understand why people are slagging it before it's open either.
If one poxy review is offending and distressing you so much that you're determined it's crap before setting foot in the thing then just don't ride it. Simple as.
I for one am reserving judgement till I've been on the thing

Perhaps decided is the wrong word, but I'm still basing my opinion that it looks rubbish. I'd love to proven wrong, but I'm really doubtful because I don't even like proper dark rides that much as most people on here do, so I'd be really surprised if I ended up liking this. By the way, the "general public" is just a few people I know that I've spoken to and they've said they're not really bothered by this.

It doesn't help the case when Merlin's history with both dark rides and actor driven attractions have been generally quite poor and badly received...

Then you add in the VR element, and the strange choice of IP (some of us don't GET his stuff, so they're already disengaging some of the population), and then a daft storyline about fracking and poison gas and it adds up to the pessimistic end of the scale...

It just feels like Merlin and Thorpe have tried to over complicate everything to get that instant return, when that £30 odd million would've gone towards a stand out 'traditional' dark ride...

Don't want to start an argument here, and everyone's entitled to their opinions, but this is how I see it:

Positives so far:
  • First dark ride in the UK for quite a few years
  • High budget, lots of potential for theming, story, or technology.
  • Nice facade
  • It's looking like it's going to use lots of new technology, which could be a good thing if done well
  • Sounds an interesting concept
Negatives so far:
  • A possible back story that's worse that the default "routine excavations/maintenance/restorations" (who does routine excavation anyway ;)) and might annoy some people who are for fracking
  • Looking like it will be an actor heavy experience, Which may eventually go the same way as sub terra
  • An ip that go very wrong if anything happens regarding deren brown or when he becomes less popular (how long do people think the deal is; will DB still be popular in ten years?)
  • Technology means that the throughput may be abysmal at best
  • Merlin track record of new technology heavy/actor heavy/gimmicky rides doesn't make me too optimistic about this working.
  • Not really related to the ride as such, but it looks like it has an evil cattlepen, looks like thorpe are expecting queues. I just hope they have gates so you can run through if it's empty rather than like the smiler where you have to walk the whole queue
Again though, could be all wrong here, and I'll be the first to admit it if I am. I just don't see thorpe delivering a world class dark ride without throughput or upkeep costs being an issue. There isn't anything stopping this being a great ride if the issues I've mentioned have been thought out, but that's my worry.

No offence taken.
The one time I'm prepared to give Merlin a chance and everyones jumping down their throats before the thing has even opened, just find it irritating.

I think the main concern over DBGT is the throughput.

It sounds like a massive project, with a lot of things that could go wrong - and a lot of things that will hold up throughput.

I hope this has been properly planned.

:)

@AliceHL91 im with you what you are saying. Give Merlin a chance, they may pull this one off. But you have to agree they don't have the best track record now do they??

This is my biggest issue. Does anyone think that all the secrecy surrounding the ride will cause lots of "I'm not sure I want to ride? what is it? is it scary?.. etc causing faff (like on x, even though it's a kiddy ride people assume it's going to be a big thrill ride as they can't see the ride/people's reaction)

I do agree with that but I'd like to give them this chance to prove they can change.
I'm not holding high hopes but I'm not jumping to conclusions either
