Dreamworld: General Discussion

I purposely haven't contributed to this thread, as I have had a professional association with Dreamworld in the past and don't want to be 'that guy' - the whole thing is utterly horrifying.

I do wonder if the park could one day be a contender for purchase and transformation into a Legoland given its closeness to the VR hub parks. They have some pretty mediocre rides, but have some great infrastructure and a wonderful water park. It has quite a few similarities to Cypress Gardens

I was also thinking similar (although Legoland hadn't crossed my mind). I'm surprised Merlin havent tried to get further into the Australian market. They could do a lot of good for Dreamworld.

Well that's not exactly difficult right now surely?

I think they're up to 13 or so attractions now, which I guess isn't significant given the way the population of the country is distributed. They're testing the markets with LDCs, presumably they will make a decision based on that.

I can't remember which deck it was in, but the long term vision is two Legoland parks in Australia.

2 Legoland Parks! Admittedly I don’t know much about Australia but I wouldn’t have thought 2 to be sustainable. The whole country only has a handful of Theme Parks and most of them are on the Gold Coast. I’d have put one there (Dreamworld being a prime contender) and a discovery centre in any other built up areas.

I am sure Sydney or Melbourne could support something. Interesting to note that Parques Reunidos just bought Wet n' Wild in Sydney, which surprised me.

Seems things aren't getting much better for Dreamworld, there is a video circulating social media at the moment of a keeper pulling a tigers tail and hitting it in front of guests. I would add the video however i have no idea how to or even if i can from Instagram.

That is disgraceful if true. How could this be allowed to happen!?

Strip this bastard naked, tie their hands, smear their genitals with steak juice, and throw them in to the tiger pen!

Dreamworld have announced that they are getting a new Mack Launch coaster which is based on Blue Fire:

Looks like it is going to have a triple launch (forwards, backwards, forwards) and you can see the spike on that rendering. It is also going to feature a spinning car!

Might I add that this ride is just $30m AUD (roughly £16.5m) out of a $70m AUD (roughly £38.7m) expansion to Dreamworld and its waterpark, WhiteWater World! As well as this new, very interesting-looking Mack launch coaster, the expansion will also entail other new rides, new slides in the water park and an expansion to ABC Kids World, amongst other things. The expansion will open in 2020, and the park is also opening its previously planned flying theatre after a reported 8 month delay.

Rather intriguingly, this Mack launch coaster will also be taking the place of the park's ill-fated rapids ride.

Things definitely seem to be looking up at Dreamworld after a difficult few years; hopefully this represents the park turning over a new leaf!

I think they're betting big here, I wish them luck. Dreamworld is the first park I worked at, it's a great place with some great staff. It's so strange how the parks on the Gold Coast buy such similar rides. You can see Dreamworld from Movie World.

It looks like some good investment in the Gold Coast parks with decent quality rides, with Seaworld also adding a new themed land inc a large wooden coaster, topspin and sky flyer. Opening in phases and due to be completed by end of 2020. Which i assume is when Dreamworlds coaster is also set to open.

Have to wonder how much longer Superman has. Magic Mountain released a survey about a potential replacement last year I believe.

I must admit, despite having never ridden it, this closure does make me feel a little sad as well. Tower of Terror II was actually one of the first international roller coasters I ever read about in a roller coaster book when I was just getting into theme parks (along with the likes of Son of Beast and Steel Dragon 2000), so I must admit that I had always hoped to ride it someday.

I'm sure that the Mack launch coaster they're getting next year will be a more than fitting replacement, though, especially as it looks amazing and Tower of Terror II does not seem to be too highly acclaimed these days judging by the comments in this thread. Also, such a behemoth of a ride must have been a huge operational drain for Dreamworld, especially since the park's visitor decline in 2016; is it true that the ride was launched at a reduced speed in its later years, or did I imagine that?

Interestingly, I think this may also be the tallest and fastest roller coaster ever to be removed!

I worked Tower of Terror for a summer. I'm pretty unmoved by this news.

Dreamworld has a number of challenges that it needs to address, that anachronism does not help them.

Farewell, old friend.

I really hope they don't get rid of it, it's such an iconic coaster and even moreso now that it is unique. I'd imagine the fact that they've got a new-ish drop tower attached to the side of it will give it a slightly longer lifespan.

Dreamworld are keeping Giant Drop but are losing the attached coaster. Sure MM could do the same, if inclined.

The difference between the two parks is that Tower of Terror is still a real cornerstone of DW, whereas Superman is just one of a bunch of coasters at MM.
