Gender Identity

Your confused when Sam Smith comes out as ‘non-binary’

Sorry but I have no clue what this means....
I think non-binary is basically where someone doesn't identify as any particular gender.

Really? That’s a whole new level to me. Each to their own and without meaning to cause offence - isn’t that a load of tosh? Feeling for the other sex yes? But not wanting to associate yourself as male or female? What’s the world coming to.
I think that for some people, it's quite difficult knowing what they actually want to be, so they don't really want to associate themselves with any particular gender.

I can understand that. I guess I’m just old and don’t get it. A bit like our grandparents don’t get the internet.

It’s going to make completing forms hard work - male female other either neither - I’m sorry but I get how people feel and how their minds feel but putting it simply you are either male or female

When my wife went into hospital the other week she was asked if it was ok to refer to her in female naming, or did she identify as another gender.

I just about stopped myself spitting the water I'd just drunk and still had in my mouth over the nurse while laughing so much.

I'm sorry but you're either female, male or trans-gender, you're not a furby or furry or pink unicorn.

It's here to stay and one of those things future generations won't think twice about it.

Crimes against the English language aside, what I do object to are people being hounded for 'mis-gendering' others, it's a huge cultural change and in some ways potentially a barrier to conversation - especially if it's a new pronoun that people have to understand/learn before they use it.

What I think is a tricky subject is when you have someone wanting to use ze, zir, zem, and zeir and someone else saying they're made up words and they're not going to use them - who wins?

Some of my wrinkled very oldies have started using the term alphabet people, through the church local social, as it is known,
Alphabet people?
LGBT.
One insists that they add another letter on the end every decade.
So the next one is due any time now.

I think @Rick has summed it up nicely above. Whilst I meant my post in a humerus way I genuinely have no understanding of the meaning of this.

Time to do some reading I think - I can’t be seen to be old and fuddy duddy now - need to move with the times I guess

I probably should have added "non-binary" (although I personally find that in itself a bit amusing as to me it's saying "I don't want to identify as male or female so I'll identify as nothing" erm ok... LOL) to my original statement about it. At least that makes sense as to why a person might want to identify as it.

What I have a problem with is when people start demanding 'fury' or 'pokemon' is put on their birth certificate under gender, or some silly such stuff like that, that is when someone needs to sit down and talk to the person and try to establish why they think they are a cartoon character and hopefully help them, not pander to their fantasy.

They have to use her name "camron" as that's a gender equal name. She cant do things like pe. Because if they tell her to get changed in girls changing room she can basically say there not respecting her choices. They have to make special arrangements when it comes to things like that. To me it's all bs to be honest

Sorry for the double post but I want to add a bit more detail. My daughter knew about being gay and straight, I have no problems with teaching the kids about the world. She knew nothing about being non-binary etc because to be honest I knew nothing about it. Until her school sent a letter home saying they was going to start teaching it in sex ed. Well you reap what you sow I guess. If they hadn't of taught it chances are she wouldn't now identify as that. And like I say I think it's to annoy the school because she has no problem with people calling her a "girl" unless it's the school
