Gender Identity

Fair bit of ignorance in this thread.

If your referring to my situation then I would say...no not really. I know my daughter and I know what shes doing. Not saying there ismt people out there that identify as this and that's all fine and well, I still dont understand it and I still dont understand the need for it. If she decides she still wants to identify as non-binary when she leaves school then that's completely fine with me. As long as shes happy and healthy then I've done my job correctly

Not at all! I commend you immensely for supporting your daughter, regardless of your beliefs.

I'm not very keen on people trying to decide who people can or cannot identify as. Just because you dont understand a foreign language, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

For a lot of people its black and white. No gray. And I understand them for that outlook, but when something you dont understand becomes your every day life, well you either embrace it or run away. I dont run :)

They have to use her name "camron" as that's a gender equal name. She cant do things like pe. Because if they tell her to get changed in girls changing room she can basically say there not respecting her choices. They have to make special arrangements when it comes to things like that. To me it's all bs to be honest
Ok thanks. Sounds like the school is not set up correctly.
The college i work at have along side male and female toilets there are WC toilets, they are single user toilets that anyone can use.
We have 2 individual lockable changing rooms for e.g. non binary, trans. To change in.
Preferred name and gender on register system next to their legal name and legal biological assigned gender.
There are other things as well.

She is in a catholic secondary school...no they really are not set up correctly to deal with it.

And to save double posting it's always been a thing. Just less accepted and spoken about. Shows how far the world has come to be able to have a conversation about it

We didn't have nuns, but we did have a priest. He was known as "Dirty Father [name redacted]"

Sex is biological. Gender is not.

That’s not the case though is it? I’m sorry but I’m not being ignorant nor do I think anyone else in this thread has. I have openly started a debate to try and understand more. Happy to listen to your points further if you want to PM me as I genuinely don’t understand and feel as a farther of four young children i probably should understand. That’s not being ignorant. Quite the opposite.

That all said, when you spend thirty odd years of your life simply having male or female as options and only recently seeing society start to accept LGBT community then there is going to be a natural degree of ignorance.

I think that there is a hell of a lot to discuss on this subject - would it not be worth transferring these posts to another thread? Any admin around ?

I probably should have added "non-binary" (although I personally find that in itself a bit amusing as to me it's saying "I don't want to identify as male or female so I'll identify as nothing" erm ok... LOL) to my original statement about it. At least that makes sense as to why a person might want to identify as it.

What I have a problem with is when people start demanding 'fury' or 'pokemon' is put on their birth certificate under gender, or some silly such stuff like that, that is when someone needs to sit down and talk to the person and try to establish why they think they are a cartoon character and hopefully help them, not pander to their fantasy.

What like people putting Jedi as a religion ?

Agree...

Really would like this to be spoken about more even if it's just to help me with my daughter. Please transfer this to it's own thread

Sex is biological. Gender is not.
That's not been the mainstream view for a long time. It's not that long since most forms asked you for your 'sex', because it was assumed that one sex mapped to one gender.

Fair bit of ignorance in this thread.
I think it's ignorant to assume ignorance. I'm not for one minute suggesting that it doesn't exist, but in my experience more often than not it's people not immediately dropping 50, 60, 70 years of understanding and replacing it with the modern view.

Some of the words my 95 year old grandma uses would make your toes curl... Words that she has been taught are the 'nicer' words than those that were prevalent in her youth are now themselves not acceptable.

"Coloured" being a good example. She's been saying that for seventy years, since words that I won't type were deemed incorrect. I can't have the "We say people of colour, not coloured" conversation again, I just don't have the energy.

I've moved this into a separate topic as requested. As a team we don't always get round to reading each topic on the forum, so reporting the topic (thanks Jb85) is the easiest way to alert us to action to be taken.

Naturally I'd also request that people be respectful of each other's views. Thanks!

The real problem I see with it, is that a number of people use in a way that is detrimental to the overall thing... Much like in the same way that parents try and get their kids diagnosed with autism or ADHD as a get out clause to bad parenting...

It's an utter minefield though, and I'm not exactly looking forward to the potential of a child growing up in an environment where everyone must be against the "norm"...
