WHO are saying to governments test test test and test more, its the only way

yet we got told to stay at home. you will not be tested,

how are we supposed to know we have it, and not just a runny nose. how often are you suppose to self isolate . everytime you think you may be infected.

everyone just take the rest of the year off work, and dont go out, just in case

I really can’t work out whether you are trolling or not. For someone who has been panicking so much, you don’t even seem to know what the symptoms are, a runny nose isn’t one of them.

:( knowing my luck I'll have picked up the mutated version that give a runny nose.
but then again, what if you have a cold and then catch the virus :(
you just wouldnt know

The government announced today that they are massively stepping up testing efforts, so that might help to reduce the severity of the outbreak somewhat if they can effectively isolate those who have it or have come into contact with those who've got it.

What's interesting is they could potentially create a test for after the event to see if you have the antibodies in your bloodstream. For now I think they're right to prioritise people in hospital to make sure cross- contamination is avoided.

Shocking advice Given by the government. "Advising" against visiting pubs and bars puts the onus on the business whether to open or not. That means this likely will not trigger their business insurance policies whereas an order to close would. No measures explained to help these businesses either just that the government will "give businesses space". Space doesn't pay the bills or put food on the table of the owners and the employees.

So the government is looking after their friends in insurance first.

Staying at a Premier Inn this evening, hotel has had lots of cancellations and only 3 rooms occupied for tonight.

Attached restaurant was like a morgue and girl was telling us they’ve had to reduce staff and rotate them. They were actively turning away passing trade and instead only wanting to serve those with Premier Inn meal deals because they had to. Imo if staff had their way the restaurant would of been closed.

Not sure if that’s a direction from Whitbread but turning away punters wanting to pay full price will bite them when things get back to normality.

Singapore already has one and has been using it to great effect to fill in blanks when doing contact tracing... Would be good if it could become a home test so people could detect for themselves if they have had it or not.

Just read that 55 people have now died from this in the UK. Very sad news

On a brighter note, it would seem that China has now extended its offers of help to Spain:

For all the flack that China is receiving regarding this virus, I think they should be commended for how cooperative they are being with the rest of the world in combatting the virus. They released the gene code pretty much as soon as they knew it, they tested extensively and went to great lengths to try and prevent the spread of the virus, and now their situation seems to be returning to normality somewhat, they are helping other countries out.

That doesn't make me like the Chinese government, they still heavily censor the internet and persecute people because of their beliefs.

So China didn't donate the items to Italy...... Italy had to buy it off them....... Sorry but I can't say what I am thinking of them right now....

Stop comparing this to the seasonal flu, this spreads much more quickly and has a fatality rate that is ten times higher than the flu. Panicking doesn't help, but neither does acting like this is no big deal.
Have you got any numbers to support this? PeteA's original post very clearly showed that the common cold is more deadly.

55 dead sounds like a terrible number, but it's nothing compared to the millions of people about to lose their jobs / a reliable source of income once this country shuts down!

Protect the old and vulnerable for now, but keep the young and fit going on as usual. Because in a couple of months time we are going to be wishing we hadn't made such a rash decision when thousands of people find they don't have jobs to go back to.

I have a prediction. This situation will continue for months and months and with no vaccine available until next year some time the government will u-turn and just say we all have to try to go on as normal with the exception of the most vulnerable. We can't go on for 12 months with businesses and economies being totally destroyed. Just my prediction.
