from what I'm told it's Basically the trim breaks are either on or off, they don't adjust properly.

The trim brakes can be turned off (completes the circuit empty but goes too fast with riders).

Or they can be turned on (slows the ride down to such an extent that it needs the added weight of 18 riders to be sure of completing the circuit)

So in theory could you operate a one train service with the trims off and not require the minimum riders without issue? Of course it’ll kill throughput though.

No, 'cause the train would overspeed and cause the ride to fault.
 
The issue is the turn after the first drop, it was going to fast around it. There isn’t enough time to calculate the trains speed once it leaves the lift to engage/disengage the correct number of brakes.

It depends on the package, if someone gives me an accesso passport URL for a package I can check for that particular one.

Looking at Chessington passholder numbers seems they are operating with a total capacity of somewhere in the region of 5k guests.

Surely all the rides could run on reduced capacity with no issue? They always run empty trains before getting rides back up after a breakdown, and rides are always tested on empty trains during testing to make sure that they can run empty, so I’m sure they could run every ride in the park on the required reduced capacity settings.

Not in the case of The Smiler and Th13teen. The Smiler always has 8 dummies on empty trains after stoppages/during testing, so would always need at least 8 riders during normal operation. For Th13teen, as others on here have already stated, when running empty trains the trim brakes are turned off. They need to be on when the trains are loaded with any weight, but any less than 18 riders and it has a high chance of stalling mid-circuit.
 
So they put in trim brakes to slow it down when the ride has people in it, but if it has less than a certain amount the ride risks stalling? Well how stupid is that. The manufacturer designed a ride that is too fast without trim brakes and risks being too slow with them
