TBC: SW9 Speculation

No, they were different projects, a decade apart. The cross-valley woodie was set to begin in Dark Forest, whereas this was largely based at the other side of the valley. A precursor to Wicker Man, but more extreme, was in the early planning stages prior to the Smiler incident.
Ahh I see. Was it shelved completely or could we see that resurrected as SW9 in a few years maybe?

Correct. I think an environmental impact assessment was submitted for the development, but plans seemingly changed after The Smiler incident. All sorts of rumours flying around at the time; one was that the IP for the coaster pulled out which meant to was no longer financially viable. Unsure how true those rumours were though.

It was thought that the station for the coaster could be where Blade is, and it could have utilised part of the Forbidden Valley side of the valley. My gut instinct, based on various things at the time, made me think it would have been an RMC.

I think you were correct. A launched RMC with at least two inversions, is what I heard whispers of. Or maybe it was two launches, one inversion?

Either way, given the nonsense that Lightning Rod has been through with similar elements, perhaps we dodged a bullet... Still, something to think about and pass the time whenever you're trundling through that big unbanked corner on Wicker Man. ;)

I'd love a Gyro swing on the plot of land where Ripsaw used to sit.
They'd have to dig down though I'd imagine but it could be done. Ripsaw went pretty high at its highest point.

A world class Indoor coaster for next secret weapon would be my preference too but I don't see that coming till 2024 or 2025.

A rethink and reworking of N-ST needs to happen too.

A launch was definitely on the cards for whatever the coaster was going to be. And at the time, RMC strongly hinted in an online Q&A that they had a possible UK project lined up. Clearly that never materialised.

Didn't the project require large amounts of excavation also? Another reason why it was scrapped in response to The Smiler incident.

It's a bit of a shame as a thrill woodie is what Towers deserved after years of issues with planning and pushing through a wooden coaster. However Wicker Man is still a great family ride with superb theming.

In Theme Park Worldwide's latest video about Remembering N:ST, he mentioned that if Nemesis were to close for a season for maintenance then it would be a great opportunity to re-open N:ST as a marketing tool to get the hype going for Nemesis's reopening. If Nemesis were to close for a length of time, I think that is not a bad idea.

For the next few years
I can see CBeebies land expanding - spinball removed
Some support rides, flats etc added
A good cleanup of the park (again)

then 2025/2026 - SW9 in Katanga Kanyon. Something like cheetah hunt

I can also see us loosing a headline coaster in this time
My money is on Galactica. I think FV is now in dire need of a refurb, and I think we will see that towards the end of this decade with not one bit two coaster in that area.
2028 & 2030.
Just a prediction - no evidence .....

There's absolutely no chance they will take out a B&M coaster unless they were left with no choice.

They are built to last.

Spinball will clearly go soon as you say but I think Rita will go after that. Way before any of the B&M's. I know Rita isn't a SW but it's still a major coaster.

I like the idea of the next SW coaster in KC though.

Katanga canyon would be my choice too, John Wardley has spoke previously about a Stand-up coaster that was planned in KC that would of utilised a large hole of some sort. If these plans were ever dug up I’d love to see a coaster utilise the tunnel with RMT and The rapids! Having 3 rides interacting in a single tunnel would be incredible, it would take some alterations to the the tunnel and landscape however. We are a long way off any developments in my opinion though.

I also like the idea of having an SW in Katanga Canyon, but my only question is; where could it go? The area as it stands is not exactly laden with space, and I think it would be very difficult to put a 3rd major ride in. So controversially, I think that if a coaster was to go in KC, I would take out Congo River Rapids and build some sort of replacement major water ride elsewhere in the park. I think having RMT and the new coaster intertwine with one another would be really nice, and almost reminiscent of something like Phantasialand’s Klugheim.

So what I’d probably do is put this new water ride in somewhere as SW9 and then have the KC coaster as SW10, so that the park doesn’t go for an extended period without any major water rides.

Whatever it is, though, I hope it goes somewhere on the Western side of the park (MB, KC, GW, FV) as once you get past Mutiny Bay, I’d say that this part of the park is possibly a little dated in comparison to the Eastern side, which seems to have had the lion’s share of the major investment in recent years.

Whilst I do like the sound of that, it would be a shame to say goodbye to Congo River Rapids. It's an extremely old ride so I can see them removing it in the coming years, but as far as Alton Towers' 'flat' ride collection goes, it's sparse. I'd be sad to see it go though.

Please don't talk up another removal of another water ride. Congo River Rapids may not be like it used to be, but the park is now lacking water rides. I can't see them moving it or replacing it. Once it gone, it will be gone for good, especially if Merlin are in charge.

There is the issue that following the incident on Splash Canyon the park is being cautious with rapids rides, but I really wouldn't want to see it removed, there is nothing wrong with the ride! A coaster can quite easily go over the top of the existing rides if needed. Also if the rapids were removed any replacement would have to conform to newer standards and be sealed and operate only with clean water (similar to viking at Legoland) so its cheaper/easier to keep the existing rapids.

Well, Splash Canyon is re-opening this season so I don't think it should really affect Congo's future.

I would really miss Congo River Rapids, together with RMT it is the most complete area of the park to me. The interaction between both is fantastic and one of the last remaining parts of the original towers magic.
