The Brexit Thread

The problem with anything to do with Brexit and all it entails is that no matter what happens, Cameron opened Pandora's Box.

It can never be closed.

Cameron thought he was being clever by promising a vote he didn’t think he could loose for his own personal gain, it got him the majority he so craved at the GE but at what cost.

The EU isn’t perfect far from it and in the end it will probably implode due to some of the fanatics that seem to be running it, as a trade body it and even a single currency to some extent made sense, but once they start talking army’s and single police forces they lost the plot.

but once they start talking army’s and single police forces they lost the plot.

Was there ever any evidence they were seriously proposed?
There is of course europol for international crime and there is a small multi-country military force, but I don't think there was ever any real talk of "replacing" countries own military or police?

I remember my Year 8 English teacher on the day of the Brexit referendum said to us that while she wasn’t sure which way to vote, she was pretty tempted to vote Leave because the EU apparently “[wanted] to amalgamate all of the countries in the bloc together to make one big country called the United States of Europe, and Britain would only be a state within this new mega country like, say, Texas is within the USA”, and she didn’t want Britain to lose its status as its own country.

So maybe the bloc did want deeper integration?

Personally, while I was always a Remain supporter myself and if it were still going now, I would still support Remain, I think it’s important to accept that Leave won and that we’ve now left the EU, and taking that into account, we should try and carve ourselves a successful and prosperous future accordingly.

The word "apparently" was doing a lot of work in what your teacher was saying, as far as I know most discussion like that was just conspiracy theory.

Or maybe your teacher was talking out of her arse?

As a teacher, it is quite alarming that a teacher would state this to a group of impressionable Y8 children.

A lot of comments by Remain supporters were dismissed as "Project Fear". What a lot of people forget is that Leave had their own Project Fear campaign too. Things like the European Army, Turkey joining the EU, the Lisbon Treaty and claims such as the above are all examples.

I'd post that image of Farage standing in front of that awful poster arguing against Turkey joining but I don't really want to look at frog face.

Just reminded me of when Bulgaria (I think) joined; with a number of reporters at the airports expecting the first flight in to be rammed and about 2 people came in. But hyperbole was always the name of the game (on both sides). Just the Remain sides concerned were dealing with things that are definitely not going to happen and Leave's were all very pie in the sky.

I don't think anyone would've minded if there'd been an actual plan for it. But once Leave won everyone pointed their fingers at each other and told them to sort it. Which lead to the rest of the nonsense.

It was Romania, and it was Christmas. I remember the news report too, just some bloke over to visit his friends for New Year looking completely bewildered that he was being met by the national press.

I voted for Brexit so that the NHS could get an extra £350 million a week. Now they're raising the National Insurance. What's going on?

Or it’s a “you have spent 11 years underfunding health and social care which has been further crippled by staffing shortages and equipment cost rises caused by brexit so using a tax that only impacts the lower paid and costs the rich nothing tax”

...and Covid :)

The £18 billion that was supposed to be diverted to the NHS if the Brexit referendum was won was never going to go there in reality. Enough people fell for it to tip the balance of the vote, however.

Covid pandemic that’s what is going on and massive waiting lists.

I have worked in the NHS for years, the recruitment issues had already started, waiting lists were increasing and beds were short every winter (and most of the summer). Covid accelerated the problem certainly, but it takes 20 x more money and effort to recruit internationally now, equipment costs went up by 20% (most medical equipment is imported from the continent) and drug prices were rising.

The lack of blood tubes now is not a Covid issue, it’s an import and haulage issue (previously we could just move stock over the border, now it needs tons of equivalency paperwork).

Covid is just a laxative that sped the existing excrement faster down the tubes, not the cause.

Theresa May's deal would have probably led to far less logistical disruption, but the millionaire Conservative rebels were not in favour of that - convenient given their private healthcare.
