[šŸŒŽ Universal GB] General Discussion

The Singapore park has a Jurassic park rapids, although that park isnt operated by Universal themselves (much like how Tokyo Disney is not owned by Disney)

We could get an indoor boat ride like they have done in Beijing, although Universal donā€™t seem to have used boat ride systems for dark rides much in the past. Their has been rumours that one of the recent Zelda concepts is an indoor water ride using the Mack rocking boat ride system.

I am not expecting anything that gets you wet outside in the initial plan except maybe a splash pad as part of one of the play zones, with universal wanting to operate year round.

I wonder if we will see the Main Street covered like they did in Beijing and Disney did in Tokyo. The original Beijing concept art did not show it a room structure so it still possible we could see that here.

I could see an indoor water park added a few years down the line, think Rulantica at Europa but with an even bigger budget šŸ˜

Please No covered main street it ruins the look of completely.
Completely agree, I thought that Tokyo Disneylandā€™s Main Street was incredibly cheap and tacky because of its horrible roof. Iā€™d also hate to see entire lands contained in a single building. DLP manage just fine with a climate similar to Bedfordā€™s without having to enclose what should be outdoor spaces.

Yeah I hate Panda at Beijing It totally detracts from the whole immerion of a theme park. Though unless it's a totally indoor theme park.

I hate the fact we are getting Beijing Minion minion land with a basic kiddy coaster and flat ride inside that pier dome it's something you would expect from merlin. We know Universal can do much better but I think they cheaped out on this one.

I suppose theyā€™d have to take into account the weather, but doesnā€™t the Asian parks also have a rapids ride?

Singapore has a rapids but they have a tropical climate.

Osaka has the boat ride and whilst not tropical is comparatively much warmer than the UK. There would only be a month or so that it would be unpleasant to ride.

Right which one of you lot have they interviewed for this...

Nice article about theme park design. I very much hope, and expect, Universal Creative to put storytelling at the heart of all they design in the park. Iā€™ll be mightily disappointed if Universal change their approach and try to compete for attention with nonsense like tallest/fastest coaster in the UK, Europe or whatever. They can safely leave that to the likes of Thorpe Park, and focus on a highly immersive, deeply themed storytelling environment in to which they can place a variety of world class, cutting edge rides and attraction.

I donā€™t see Universal reinventing the wheel for the park, not least because their typical product would fill more of a gap in the UK market.

And besides; if the rumours about the Back to the Future coaster are true, they could well be doing both!

Velocicoaster and Hagrids are proof that, with the right resources and money, it's possible to build a story-driven rollercoaster that also ranks as first-class from a track and train perspective. It's an organic innovation that Universal don't get enough credit for, and I can only imagine that a BTTF coaster will continue and probably cement that trend.

The BTTF coaster story is there already, it would be hard for Universal to get it wrong
I've seen lots of calls for the old BTTF simulator ride from USF to be built in Bedford. To me that would be Universal getting it spectacularly wrong, but an innovative coaster or a dark ride in a richly themed setting would be great.

I don't have strong views about the different IPs that are rumoured or frequently appear on wish lists, it seems that all of them could form the basis of brilliant, world class attractions. Or they could be the basis of tired retreads, simply repeating what has gone before (and already replaced in some cases). I don't think the particular IP guarantees if a themed land is a great success or a space-filling failure, it will depend on the quality of what is designed and built. I guess we won't have a firm idea of Universal's intentions until we are much deeper in to the construction process.

Certainly not those who have insisted that Lord of the Rings is a poor choice for IP (as its recent instalments have little cultural relevance), yet have no issues with a land themed around a film franchise which finished 35 years ago.

No one has mentioned Ghost Busters yet either which I think would be a strong choice. Both parks in the US have a shooting style ride Iā€™m unsure if the Asia parks do? However I think Ghost Busters bust like BTTF is a very strong IP still and has a lot of relevance and nostalgia too! I mean they do keep using it at HN too!

BTTF is also one of the few franchises that haven't been ruined or diluted by modern Hollywood. The films still stand up extremely well ( kind of like the original Jurassic Park Films). Ghostbusters is great and if be all for a ride but it's a brand that's been damaged over the years by sequels and spin offs of mixed quality.
