Cedar Point: General Discussion

Top thrill 2 down indefinitely again?

Seems like it's been closed for coastermania this weekend with rumoured issues with the spike as well as with one of the trains.

At what point are they going to just give up with this thing? It's been an absolute disaster for them.

That doesn't sound very promising. If Top Thrill 2 is shelved (likely due to it being a maintenance headache), I'm not sure what else of similar interest could be put there. It would need to have a very long, narrow footprint.

Had a look at the comments on Coastermania on Twitter and there were a fair few uncomplimentary about the day.

So far the merger between Six Flags and Cedar fair hasn't really gone that well.

I believe they suggested that there was some tough times ahead though before things get better again but I don't think they imagined it would be this bad.

I believe Cedar Point attendances for the season have been well done on normal too. People waiting for the title coaster to open I guess.

To be fair, I don’t think you can blame Top Thrill 2’s issues on the merger. Legacy Cedar Fair would have green lighted it, if I’m not mistaken; the merger went through after it opened, didn’t it?

It does sound as though there’s quite hefty capital investment on the way throughout the chain, even if there have been some growing pains as the company adjusts.

to be fair TT2 is only a minor issue, there have been so many other issues, multiple large parks closing, the demolishment of a ton of rides including king da ka, also aren't there roomers that sirens curse was supposed to go to another park, but cedar fair decided to move it to cedar point.

as for the capital, it could help but how much is going to be available for each park,

we have 4 major chain UK parks, most have had regular investments and recently they all have been experiencing massive investments especially the park that was left out from more regular investments CWOA

in America though they literally have parks that haven't had a new rollercoaster for close to multiple decades and needs investment (TP didn't for about a decade, but it had darren browns (insanley expensive) and it got to the point where it needed something), they have 42 parks (of course they are cutting quite a few) assuming around £10 million, on the low end for a rollercoaster, you would be looking at around half a billion (probably more) for a new ride in each park, I can't see that happening especially to a company who has just merged (usually an expensive process) we will get a few new coasters announced

It also depends on the manufactures cedar fair uses, if it is the same management team they may insist on not using intimin, S&S (probably zamperla) RMC and a couple more they could loose out,

they will probably build new rollercoasters at their main parks (e.g cedar point, kings dominion, etc) as they always have but I wonder if the rest of the parks may get a ride relocated from one of the closing parks

i might be wrong but their is only one large park closing, while they announced a few years ago that great America in California is set to close in the next 8 years or so that was announced long before the merger was proposed and no closing date actual set yet.

The business closing older rides that are drain on resources with either low ridership or poor reviews makes sense. Kingsway Ka slightly different but ultimately if it’s a huge drain on resources as a business perspective I can see why they would remove it, as much as I would have liked it to have stayed.

ah I didn't realise that one was prior to the deal.

I guess however, it isn't a good sign that they will just demolish the rides they don't deem profitable enough (which is quite hard to determine as rides can attract a large amount of people (for instance the tallest in the USA)) especially this soon after the aquisitions

Apart from Kinda Ka the rides removed weren’t exactly headline coasters- most were aging coasters many of which close to end of life, or gave a poor ride experience.

On another note Top thrill 3 has reopened after 3 days of downtime.

Feels like it's mocking me seeing it test all day, it does look very good though.

Park itself is as great as ever, relatively busy but as arrived late today and doing a half day tomorrow couldn't justify the $150 fast lane+.

Managed two rides on Top Thrill 2 so made up with that, especially after it was closed over the weekend.

As a ride with the backwards launch and spike I'd say it's superior to Dragster. However it is a lot more shaky, especially during the backwards launch (but not the spike) and then the 125mph launch. Reckon the raised seating position compared to the original is the cause especially the heart line rolls going up and down as what was once a graceful manoeuvre is now a lot more forceful.

It's taken 23 years to catch on to somewhere outside of Taiwan.

To me it seems like the most pointless rollercoaster feature out there. As a rider surely the experience is almost identical to a dive coaster?

Yes it’s a technical marvel but presumably at the cost of both throughput and inevitable technical issues.

But it’s also attention grabbing which parks love.
