Technically if a retailer sells alcohol to a minor, then the member of staff and the licensee has committed a crime as it is illegal to sell alcohol to someone under 18.
Whereas with the masks I think it is only the non-wearer of the mask that can be fined, I don't think there is anything in the legislation that makes it the shops responsibility to enforce anything.

There are some great videos going round in the US where stores that have put in their own policy of no entry/service without a mask and some adults acting like toddlers and having tantrums over it.
Whilst its funny to see people act like that it worries me that people make a blanket assumption that people not wearing masks are being selfish.

Not helped with my particular situation with them, I can technically wear masks but they completely knock out verbal speech.

Do you have the full height screens at the petrol station counter anyway? If that is the case I wouldn't worry too much, you are protected from customers aynway!
We've got the sneeze guards installed as opposed to a full-on security screen. It's not ideal, but at least we've got something, and for some customers, it's something I'm really glad we've got due to the amount they spray when they speak. Disgusting, I know, but it's the truth. We've also got colleague-worn cameras, which we don't have to wear, but I've tended to since having customers properly kick off for the lack of gloves on the forecourt and not accepting my explanation as to why. Long story short is that people saw us as a free PPE station and nicked all the gloves, depleting stocks at an alarming rate. It's been a problem across the whole company, and isn't just limited to one site. Thing is, though, we aren't legally obliged to offer people gloves to use when filling their vehicles up to stop them from getting any fuel residue on their hands. It's just a courtesy! We have now got some other gloves which we leave on top of the coal & barbecue bunker outside, so people can get some if they wish. Plus, because it's right by the shop, it's a lot easier to see if people are nicking handfuls of them. :p

and there are differences between US and UK (there is no law on it in the US in general, although some states have) but I think the store can still choose not to offer service to someone not wearing a mask, even if they present a valid reason for not wearing in the US.

It seems less clear in the UK as it has been mentioned in the law that people who can't wear one for medical reasons are exempt, but it isn't clear if it is discrimination if a store chooses to have a more restrictive policy.

Anyone who throws a hissy fit over not being allowed into somewhere because of no mask clearly doesn't have an actual reason not to have one.

Would assume anyone with a valid reasoning would either explain it to said staff member or just not kick up a fuss.

I went to Sainsbury's today and must admit, I was actually pleasantly surprised. Everybody was wearing a face covering, young and old, and all staff were too except those on the checkouts who were behind screens. When I left I saw one man entering without a face covering, so if he didn't have a legitimate reason I hope he felt awkward for being the odd one out and will comply next time.

They also had automated announcements. One was asking everybody to wear a face covering to comply with the latest government guidance, and then several minutes later there was another one, "Not all disabilities are visible. Please be considerate to other shoppers and colleagues who may not be able to social distance or wear a face covering...". It was good to hear both :).

Paddington station played a masks are required but not all disabilities are visible announcement, it was one thing.

It's an interesting one for the announcements. I can see the logic behind just the one announcement, as it's all together, but it could be too long for one announcement before some tune out to whatever's being said. At the end of the day, so long as both are mentioned at some point, it doesn't matter whether it's in one announcement or two separate ones.

The announcements in Sainsbury’s are so incredibly dystopian... I don’t really think there’s any place I’ve gone or activity I’ve partaken in during this crisis that feels more like the world is truly ending than shopping in Sainsbury’s...

How long do we think this rule of mask wearing will last? I’m of the view that it will help and is required but worry in the back of my head it’s a precursor to releasing people back to the wild and allow mass gatherings (football, etc) - a mask isn’t going to protect you there I am afraid

Until at least mid 2021 I think.

Well social distancing could be in place til next year, so I wouldn't be surprised if masks are too.

I think there will be some requirement to wear face coverings in enclosed public spaces until a vaccine is widespread.

They may also allow some mass gatherings to return, there is some evidence that face coverings being used at the BLM protests in Minesota helped prevent an increase in cases. So for outdoor gatherings masks may help prevent the transmission of the virus.

Don't forget simple masks are to stop you passing on the virus, they aren't there to protect you, but to protect others.

There's apparently some evidence that it works both ways but primarily to stop someone spreading.

I think until Dominic Cummings is seen in public not wearing one and Boris backs him up saying he is following the rules ;)

Boris Johnson has now apparently said that we will be “well past” the coronavirus crisis by mid-2021: https://apple.news/AoXKCBCllSyqDxJodZfOLcA

Judging by everything that needs to happen to get completely back to pre-COVID life, I’d say that that sounds plausible!

When will you learn that Boris promise a lot of bold things but yet to deliver on anything "Thames Estuary Airport - Cough Cough" ;)

I was only saying that his estimate seems very plausible given what I’ve heard some of the other experts say; if a vaccine is found by the end of the year, then a return to normality for mid-2021 seems very plausible to give time to vaccinate a good percentage of the population.

It's not his style to be accurate. The fact that he's publicly saying this with such certainty makes me suspect he knows something he isn't telling.

That’s true, I suppose; Boris could well have intel on things like vaccine development that we don’t, and he likely knows how the government intends to do things like vaccinate people.
