I know it's a bit early yet, but someone recently did a poll on Twitter asking witch classic maze people would most like too see brought back for next years 15th anniversary, and Towers replied with this...

I’d imagine this is the social teams having some fun with guests.

Although it would be nice to bring back mazes of the past, there’s a few reasons I’d suspect The Sanctuary in particular, wouldn’t be one of them:

  • The PR backlash from The Asylum at Thorpe in 2013 around mental health/hospital-esque themes would make bringing back a maze of a similar theme a risky move. Particularly as we’re now approaching 2022; the culture, ethics and morals around these types of things has grown since 2013 and will probably continue to do so. Even though the notion is innocent, you’d have to hope the press don’t run with the idea and potentially bring quite damaging PR against the event/Resort. Although they do say, all PR is good PR;)
  • Bringing back a maze already canned would prove costly, and I doubt could ever be an exact replica. Lots of the sets and props have been repurposed, or trashed entirely. I believe that’s why Thorpe went down the route they did with Trailers, as bringing back mazes of the past is an extremely challenging thing to do.

A friend of mine was on the Scaremazing backstage tours in October and got talking to the team. They said they will never bring back an old maze because for people who went through the original it will never be as good as it was. And to the general public they won't understand the significance of them.

The only old thing Merlin can bring back successfully is Bubbleworks hypothetically. Like we can see this as a majority of The Gruffalo River Ride POVs online, and a lot of Vlogs at Chessington is either, people complaining about When Vampire will close, Tomb Blaster, and How much better the original Bubbleworks was to The Gruffalo. The public still understand its importance since its still quite fresh in everyone's minds. But It won't happen, no matter how hard we wish, for a long time at least, since Chessington still have a license with Julia Donaldsons books and characters.

But yeah, the return of An old scare maze wouldn't be successful, since a majority of Alton Towers guests are largely family groups. The childrens parents didnt grow up with scare Mazes. In short term, too early to bring them back, and the wrong product for the wrong audience.

Maybe it's because I am not a 'scare maze guy' but I honestly can barely tell the difference between most of them. Dark, failed actors shouting boo and overpriced is my summary of almost all of them.

As another no scare maze guy, I really think it is an age thing.
Once you have done a dozen different ones, there is simply no point any more.
If they were free or a couple of quid, then ok, but current scare prices are crazy.
Few if any offer the value of Passage del Terror in my eyes, at least that one is professionally done, and a consistent quality.

AT have posted a new Instagram video, citing ‘a year of thrillant events’. At the end of the video segment, a new logo asset for Scarefest can be seen with a ‘15 years’ caption.

Hopefully the recognition of this being the 15th year of Scarefest within the marketing assets signals big changes and updates for Scarefest this year.

New Scare Maze confirmed:

award-winning Scarefest returns for 2022 with live entertainment for all ages and a brand-new scare maze

Slightly disappointed that it’ll only be one new maze and not two. I’m guessing this will be Mine Tours’ replacement given the maze shots don’t appear in any of the promotional videos so far.

Still hoping out for a full refresh regardless - all 4 mazes have had their time imo, although despite being the oldest, Altonville Mine Tours was by far and away the best maze last year. We definitely don’t need Toxic Junkyard back for a third year, despite 2021 improvements.
