It's been that way at most Merlin parks for many years now
Yeah its custom at a lot of parks around the world for ride staff to "test-ride" the coasters before opening. Best part of the job for most. It's been that way at most Merlin parks for many years now
Who have for some rides been known to do test rides, I believe @spinball has seen smiler techs.Where time allows, the ride team normally try and get a staff ride (possibly two) in before opening to guests, call it a perk of the job.
[This bit relates to early 2000's at Towers - it may still be the same, or it could have changed]... The only requirement as pre-start checks was that one ride team member (officially it should be the operator or relief operator) ride the ride before opening. Normally you just made sure the Op / relief Op was onboard the staff ride and that was fine, the box was ticked. When Nemesis is open to the public, the minimum number of guests allowed on a train is two.
I have never heard of ride staff having to ride Nemesis after downtime before reopening, unless there was an alleged non-mechanical safety issue, i.e. safety envelope incursion that needed to be checked. Any alleged mechanical safety issues would result in the ride being signed over to Technical Services for them to investigate.
8How many does the smiler need?
the smiler needs to have dummies in to reduce the risk of a stall on cold wheels/bearings. When it’s been stopped due to lightning in the area they ran it to keep them warm.I've never seen staff riding after a stoppage, only ever seen empty trains go round.
Interestingly, I've seen the Smiler testing only with dummies in the morning, yet Wicker Man with empty trains then staff. Any idea why dummies are used on The Smiler and no staff, yet Wicker Man uses empty trains then trains with staff?
Yeah, I knew that already. Perhaps I worded my question wrong. What I should have asked was Why do staff ride Wicker Man before opening but not The Smiler before opening (well I haven't seen it happen)?8

Expect highs of 40 and lows of 5, with scattered showers near nemesis and firey hot temperatures near wicker manI'm going to Alton Towers on 17th October, does anyone know how busy it will be? I don't want walk ons... I would prefer five minute queues.
Presumably because wickerman isn't likely to get stuck in a potencically dangerous to evacuate from position.Yeah, I knew that already. Perhaps I worded my question wrong. I doubt they have 8 spare staff to go on.Yeah, I knew that already. Perhaps I worded my question wrong. What I should have asked was Why do staff ride Wicker Man before opening but not The Smiler before opening (well I haven't seen it happen)?
Why would they need 8 staff to ride it? It can't be for weight and momentum issues because it tests with 1 or 2 dummies on the back rowI doubt they have 8 spare staff to go on.
Yeah it was closed last Thursday. Didn't realise it had been closed for longer. Personally, I think it's on it's way out. It's old and could do with replacing. One of these could fit in it's pit;Does anyone know what’s up with The Blade and when it might reopen? I think it’s been closed about a week now and I always worry when that shuts as I think that they won’t bother to repair it with how old it is.

High capacity, thrilling and impressive off-ride. Fits the area theme too.

Blade's on its way out from what I heard from 2 staff members walking past sub terraDoes anyone know what’s up with The Blade and when it might reopen? I think it’s been closed about a week now and I always worry when that shuts as I think that they won’t bother to repair it with how old it is.
Thrilling? They look incredible but not sure I'd say they're thrilling unless the Great Adventure one isn't representative of what they can do. Which one have you ridden?High capacity, thrilling and impressive off-ride. Fits the area theme too.
