I think it's to be expected with nemesis now days unfortunately. As I said earlier its 27 and that's not young. I could see it lasting another 10 years but at this rate I'm not sure

I sincerely doubt it has only 10 years left. B&M's are built to last, and it isn't actually *that* old. There are far older coasters operating throughout the world without many problems.

No, I just wondered if there was an issue I'd missed linked to last year. If it's been testing, it's obviously coincidental that it's down today.

I

I can't actually believe mixtape has been getting the same queues as the smiler. Surely anyone walking walking into x sector in that scenario would get straight into the smilers queue

Go on a new rude you've never been on, or go on a dilapidated and fairly uninteresting coaster you've done a hundred times. No surprise here.

Lots of posts like this, you seem to struggle with people not enjoying the same as you.

I guess everyone has different preferences which is fine. From what I've seen today the retro squad is a success already as the coaster queues did seem shorter than most of 2020. If people want to queue for these flats then that's great for those coaster lovers out there. Blime me 50 mins for the smiler I would take that any day

B&M's certainly do have a finite lifespan. Look at Hulk at IoA which closed 16yrs 4mths after opening for a complete rebuild, bar the lift hill. We bumped into some guys from Universal Creative in Twin Peaks [a fine dining establishment on I-Drive :)] when it was being rebuilt... they said the NDT (none-destructive testing) on the ride had highlighted hairline cracks, but thankfully Universal decided to rebuild like-for-like & not build yet another simulator 4D ride.

Sure Hulk would have operated pretty much year-round in it's original 16 & a bit years (bar closures for annual rehab / inspection). But it proves that even with a B&M there comes a time when it's time to go, or do a complete rebuild.

Seeing the photos of the masks in place of the waterfalls on CRR is really sad. I had hoped with the new boats that they would be turned back on this year. I agree that having them on even if it’s lower power to create an effect would be better than nothing, or of the masks randomly shot water between them would be something at least! Those who remember the random firing hose pipes scattered around the ride in the past will recall the sheer terror and laughs they produced!

But randomly firing water jets, like the waterfalls, encourage guests to stand up to avoid getting wet (unless on really hot days when folks don't mind getting wet). It sounds crazy, but given the UK climate guests don't want to get soaked even on a water ride. Ripsaw was a bit of an exception as guests could see whilst queueing / in the viewing area what was going to happen. Ditto for Battle Galleons.

Would just like to point out it's 19:45 in the evening in April and Alton Towers is still open!!! How awesome is that!

When I read @AT86's post a few days about the extended openings, I nearly fell off my chair!
Next challenge: we have 1 week until the first 10-4, any chance we can petition to make those 5pm closes?

I think 5 would be better for sure. 8 close to 4 the following week seems like a significant drop of hours

Shows will be on the stage from May 17, one of the attendants with the characters confirmed that's when they are going to start in a livestream that went up earlier touring the park!

4pm closes should never return. Close for a day if you have to, but 4pm is pathetic. It damages the brand and leaves a bitter taste in the mouth for anyone who attends, whether the coasters are walk on or not, whether you paid a bargain basement price to get in or not. Few will remember a 20 min queue, or getting in for practically free, most will remember a 6 hour day and being booted out half way through the day with the sun shining. Park should be 10:30 - 18:00 minimum or just not bother opening for the day.

Did Nemesis end up operating today? If it didn’t, I think every other ride in the park operated for at least part of the day today which is much better than most opening days!

Nemesis never opened today, unless you think the outdoor parts of David Walliams should be open then yes that is everything else open despite the awful weather and what the papers moaned about.

Although hairline fractures are found (and rectified) in coasters all the time at Towers. It is just the nature of metal fatigue. Happens in ALL steel coasters infact. I recall Nemesis having hairline fracture repairs 8 or so year after it opened - totally normal for any coaster.

It just so happens that Universal decided to replace most of the track to keep maintenance to a minimum going forward. A wise choice considering they want their headline attractions operating 365 days a year with minimal downtime, and they have the cash to do this.

The ride would have however, gone on for many more years with increased preventative and reative maintenance measures, thus you cannot use the time they used between replacing the track as indication their life span cannot last a very long time.

Just Universal decided to replace the track to better fit their use case, but it wouldnt have had to be replaced if they didnt want it to. Just more maintenance every year, but they did not want that.

Perhaps it's because it sits in between two of the Park's most popular coasters?
