[2024] Nemesis Reborn: Construction and Speculation

Their announcement feels disingenuous because it neglects to mention that the closure is temporary.

I understand that they're trying to provoke a reaction (it's getting heaps of comments from people who believe Nemesis is closing permanently, and are gutted about it) but... this almost feels like false advertising?

They're encouraging the public to spend their money by visiting the park and getting their final rides in, knowing full well that the ride will be back in just over a year.
True, but then again Thirteen was promoted as every theme park ride you’ve ever dreamed of in one, so I'm pretty sure joe public are used to Towers telling porkies. . .

It's no different to Sports Direct saying they're "closing down" every few weeks though and the ride will be closed for an extended period of time, so there's nothing false in the advertising. Nothing wrong with creating a bit of hype and encouraging some engagement to push a few extra guests through the gate!

Plus the addition of VR headsets when it returns will make it feel like a totally different coaster.

I wouldn’t say the advertising is lying, or disingenuous, per se, as the ride is closing for an extended period, but I could certainly see the argument that Towers are bending the truth a tad.

By that, I mean; what Towers are saying isn’t technically a lie or disingenuous, as the ride is closing for an extended period, but they forgot to mention that it’s reopening in a refurbished form no later than in 2024.

They do have some previous form for this; for instance, I remember they said that The Flume was “closing for the season” on 10th October 2015. In fairness, that wasn’t technically a lie or a disingenuous statement… but they forgot to mention that it was also closing for every other season because they were building a big new wooden roller coaster in its place.

It's all part of the wider marketing campaign, and I actually quite like it. Simply saying that a coaster will be closed for a period of time to undergo extensive essential retracking and maintenance work isn't exactly all that exciting for most people!
It’s undeniably a clever way to drum up interest! As you say, it’s unlikely that Nemesis being retracked on its own would generate an awful lot of interest.

If you think about it, Chessington did something quite similar when Vampire closed for a refurb in the early 2000s. They gave it a proper closing event as though it was leaving, closed it for the 2001 season and then reopened it as the “new” Vampire in 2002.

This gives them the opportunity to advertise a 'new for 2024' Nemesis when the time comes, so I can see why they are going down this route. I still find it a bit odd, in terms of the GP being led to believe that it will be gone forever, or something completely new will replace it... only to find out that it will be effectively the exact same ride when it reopens.

I do wonder if we'll see some rebranding under this refurb? I would love to see the original Nemesis logo return for example!

There was a big rush of people trying to get on the last ride of duel before it closed for refurbishment and this was on a off peak Tuesday and Duel is meant to be back open next season anyway.

Nemesis will be closing on a Sunday on fireworks which will be very busy so will be interesting to see how many people try and get dibs for last train on that.

Never understood the obsession with “last ride” it won’t feel any different and I guarantee a load of staff will go on it afterwards.

I will happily walk pass the morons waiting at the gate for pointless last ride credits.

No, there were part of the original story and there was a comic book on this too to promote the ride (looking back on it, Towers really went all out to market the ride) and Merlin simply brought them back when Sub Terra opened.
The comic book was just merchandising sometime after it opened, it had no bearing on the guest experience. The Phallanx was a name coined for the comic book and never an intention of the original theme. Before now there's never been any reference to The Phallanx anywhere around the ride.

Brilliant marketing idea. Of course Nemmie is like the awesome Japanese Godzilla, not the godawful wimpy American Godzilla.

Nemmie should never die. Over the next 200 years, it should have more lives than Jason Voorhees.

Really hope they can open it mid 2023, but I agree 2024 is more likely.

2024 does seem far more likely I agree but then I suppose it would depend on what B&M have going on next year. There's no reason they couldn't get it open for the summer holidays if it's being worked on intensively over the winter and Spring.

This thread has just reinvigorated a memory that has been lost in my brain for nearly three decades!

The mention by @BritishThemeParkArchive of the 'hints of a cult' worshipping Nemesis reminded me one of my favourite, understated bits of theming throughout the ride; the series of hanging pots and pans beneath the turn up unto the lift hill that resemble a sort of makeshift, shanty town kitchen. Are they still present?

Anyway, on my first ever visit to the park in 1994, there was a Jamaican steel drum band setup in the pit beside this feature, jamming along above the music. This sounds absolutely mental in retrospect, and would probably be dismissed as lacking thematic integrity these days, but I witnessed it with my own eyes as my Dad waited a few hours for his turn.

This rings a bell, think it was more of a Stomp style "scrapyard instruments" theme?
