[2024] Thorpe Park: Hyperia - Mack Hypercoaster

Which ironically might lead to the failure of this project

Yep Committing to something and going all-out for it would do far better than a trying to do height but also inversions and also sticking to a budget mess they seem to be building.

Just need them to not sh*t the bed and put OTSR's on it.
Sorry to bring up an old post, but assuming this is a Mack Hyper, you and anyone else with similar wishes is in luck; according to the HyperCoaster’s product page on Mack’s website, one of the key selling points is, and I quote, “no shoulder restraints”: https://mack-rides.com/products/rollercoaster/hyper-coaster/

Given that Mack actually sells the lack of OTSRs as a key USP, I’d say that gives us a fair chance of this having Mack’s lovely overhead lap bars like all the other thrilling Macks!

Do Merlin even operate any coasters that invert without OTSR's? I know normal theme park operators do but this is the company than happily operates Colossus with those rediculous WWF wrestler pin hold contraptions on it.

I don’t think they do, come to think of it, but there’s a first time for everything, I guess!

Unlike Gerstlauer Mack don't have an OTSR option. If they wanted them to add OTSR Merlin would have to pay the R&D costs.
Not mentioning that Mack only started building their own thrill coasters because they didn't like the other companies only offering OTSR. It'd be like asking Tesla to build a petrol car.
Assuming it is a Mack.

The Mack restraints come over your head don't they? I think that would be enough for most people. I think people seem to think rides are safer if the bar comes from the top. I think Merlin would be quite happy with the standard Mack over head lapbars.

People are happy with Icon, and they were happy with G Force at Drayton Manor for 13 years, which arguably had less of a restraint than Mack’s, so I shouldn’t think that Exodus having Mack’s regular restraints would cause too many problems.

The same argument was made when The Smiler was built (about G Force of course as Icon hadn't been built) and yet it still got OTSR.
What made it worse is that The Smiler had been designed without OTSR (as seen on a model that Gerstlauer took to conventions) but the restraints were changed anyway.

In the case of the Smiler Gerst had a ready to go alternative though (ie OTSR) that could easily be used instead. If this Thorpe coaster is a Mack then it’s not the same situation as they would need to develop them from scratch - not impossible of course but would cost more and take longer.

I suspect that due to the sheer number of inversions on the Smiler the decision was taken to go with OTSR so as not to put off those guests that would psychologically not even ride if they didn’t see that it had them. With a significantly less number of inversions this coaster wouldn’t quite be the same in that regard.

Thorpe Park have uploaded a new document for Project Exodus to the Runnymede planning portal. They're asking for an environmental review.

Interestingly the track up close looks a lot like Mack track

I can’t help but shake the feeling we’re missing something with these plans. I know the noise survey all but confirms a Mack hyper, but what if they needed an example of a quiet hyper coaster and went with the Mack version as the closest option - because the actual manufacturer haven’t built that ride type yet.

I’m just not 100% ruling out an RMC T Rex

If they were building a T-Rex, surely they’d use one of the RMC Raptors? They’re surely a pretty close reference point, no?

I don’t know, I think the scale would make a huge difference. Raptors are very small comparatively and the measurements were probably to do with how the sound travels over a long distance, rather than in the immediate area. Mack currently build the quietest hyper coasters on the market
