[202X] Project Horizon (SW9?): Planning Approved

That's not a recent development. John's been doing that for about 30 years at this point, and it's definitely intentional. It's rule number one for building hype around new attractions: play your cards close to your chest and leave things open to interpretation.

There is also a chance JW was being sarcastic about the capacity issue.

I've got a feeling that overall the presentation of the ride is going to be more important than the model or manufacturer. There'd certainly be nothing wrong with a ride of a similar type already existing at Towers being used again in the shed if the rider didn't see it as the same.

I agree, and would not discount the intamin multi dimensional coaster just because they have thirteen, it offers different types of train ie straddle seat cars, motorbike and side cars (like hagrids), trains that spin (free spin or controled) and 4 seat across trains with tiered seating). Around 12 different trick track elements. Inc a spike ie Hargrids and port aventuras new Coaster, side ways drop track, turn tables, tilting track, motion based track section, bungee lift. The fact it is completely indoors, add in the theming and effects, would make it a completely different experience to thirteen.

I was under the impression that no digging will be done, but in a reply to a YouTube comment I also replied to, Mr Sanbrooke seems to think otherwise.

I'm sure the planning application stated no digging down?

I think the small amount amount of digging he is referring to is likely just to clear the ground of the concrete flooring to go in place.

I agree with those saying that Thirteen wouldn’t necessarily stop them from building another Intamin Multi-Dimensional Coaster.

The model has expanded in scope quite considerably since Thirteen was first built, and it’s now a very versatile ride type with many different customisation options. If Alton Towers built something like Movie Park Studio Tour or Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, for instance, then that would provide an experience that’s completely different to the one offered by Thirteen.

Whatever it is, I think it will be a family or family thrill ride rather than an out-and-out extreme thrill ride (in spite of it allegedly being SW9), and I also feel that it will likely be a coaster with a strong dark ride element rather than simply a regular coaster in a shed.

I'm really thrown by the relatively small budget; originally I thought an Intamin Multi Dimension was a sure bet but given the cost of £21m for their SDR partnership on Uncharted at PortAventura, I'm struggling, especially with the claims this is something new & exciting. Not impossible for a tailored scaled down version though. I do believe it will be a unique concept and not an IP, probably Family Thrill at most... I'm not mad about that.

Following the trend of 'rebirthing' the past, with Nemmy retrack and Duel
being refurbished to more closely resemble the vibe of the original HH... I wouldn't be shocked if the Black Hole returned in some capacity 😂

Nice little woodie in the dark would be good.
I'm a HUGE fan of wooden coasters so a gal can dream!

If I could choose, Horizon would be an extreme ride because Towers haven't had one in 10 years. Would an S&S Axis work in the building?

I'd say with the contained building, they'd be wanting to maximise space so I'd be inclined to lean away from suspended trains? Something that could work, with the success of Ride to Happiness and Storm Chaser, is a Mack Spinning coaster; the latter's design would fit the budget as the whole Tornado Springs project was around the £12m mark. The fact Merlin are working with Mack for Exodus too... 🤔

I'm more intrigued than I've been in some time for a Merlin project, that's for sure!

I've been thinking about it being a Mack Spinner; perhaps if they close Spinball Whizzer. If Towers do build a Mack Spinner, then let's hope that it won't be a clone of an existing attraction like Storm Chaser was. I am not sure how easy a Mack Spinner would be to market; even if Towers went for an Xtreme one.

Honestly I think it's more likely that they'll go for a 1.2m restriction ride and aim to appeal to a family market. You can tell from the queue statistics that you can make a rollercoaster that works with that restriction and still get the crowds. I'd personally prefer a thrill ride, but I think a family style coaster would even out the lineup better.

I guess it would then be 20 years since they introduced a 1.4-metre coaster, but then again maybe the days of 1.4-metre restriction rides are dying more generally.

I would be surprised if they went for a carbon copy of an existing layout but then... would budget allow for custom? I think a Spinner is marketable, in that area especially, although, I don't think they have the re-rideability that standard/suspended trains have because of the 'sickness' factor. Completely forgot about Spinball 🤣 But you're right, it's a consideration that they may not go down that route until SW has reached the end of service at Towers.

Sorry, rare brain freeze (but maybe that's a sign of things to come). 12 years then, but the point just about holds out I think.

As a parent, I cannot express how excited I was when my 9yo hit the 1.4m mark last year 😂 I was measuring him constantly for months!

Yep it's slap bang right near the kids area as well. Anyone expecting a proper coaster will be disappointed here I feel. I do however hope it's not some indoor coaster involving something silly like switching tracks and tv screens whilst moving about 12mph

Towers don’t need another 1.4m ride, they have the thrill credentials when it comes to coasters. The only area they could do with improving in the thrill arena is flat rides.

I would assume this coaster will be 1.1m to 1.2m, that’s not because it won’t be thrilling but indoor coasters can control the senses better so you get more “thrill” with less force in an indoor coaster so the restraint restrictions can be lower.
