Well they sort-of are subject to democracy. If an anti-royal party won a majority in an election, they could simply put through a bill to abolish the monarchy. Maybe not in the past, but in this day and age it would go through, as it'd cause a democratic outrage and constitutional crisis if it didn't.

The Royal Family are in place because they still have broad popular support - if they didn't at some point in the future, they'd have to go. :)

Anyway, sorry, we're meant to be congratulating this baby for having the luck of being born into an obscene and disgusting amount of privilege and wealth. :)
 
Please keep discussion civil, its a few pages back but posts have been reported. I'm not deleting any of them as I think its a border-line thing but angry posts that insult just end up losing the debate.

And people can be negative about this subject all they want, the topic just had something that was off-topic moved into another topic. Happens all the time in the theme park topics.

See how many times you can fit the word "topic" into a paragraph :D
 
Sam - There are specific parliamentary rules preventing 'affairs of royal household' being discussed in any serious manner in the Houses of Parliament which make it very difficult for the MPs who support a Republic (of which there are at least 13 officially that do) to get heard.

Also, although the Royals are a state funded institution, they have been made completely exempt from the freedom of information act which makes it impossible for citizens to form a serious democratic opinion based on their behaviour.

And finally, there is a rigorous state funded PR system which spreads pro-royal propaganda and lies about official figures which our oligarchical press publishes without a fair representation of the alternative view. That limits the opportunity for people to make their own minds up about the issue.

Until these issues are dealt with it's very hard to even consider them slightly 'democratic', however further to that, 'popular support' is not democracy. Popular support is popular support.

Democracy is strictly a system in which the citizens are given the opportunity to vote for their leaders and people who make significant political impact on society, something which the Royal Family definitely does, even if the Palace press office tries to downplay it.

Democracy depends on your definition. Interestingly, this site argues that we are less a democracy and more an elected dictatorship! http://www.whatisdemocracy.net/ I don't want to just vote for someone to be in charge of me, that leads to delusions of grandeur/fiddling your finances because you feel entitled!

By all means, I am a supporter of the devolution of power, increased empowerment of citizens over political issues and a more localist democracy, but that bares no resemblance to a system of inherited power which doesn't change until enough people object. That is autocracy.

I wonder if I could have a baby with Prince Harry. My scientific instinct says no, but I think I ought to try a couple of times just to be sure. :D
 
Poor Kate. She's such a nice girl. I feel sorry for her, having to incubate that reptillian demon spawn in her human womb :(
As for the copulation process itself, I'd rather not think about it. It must have been a horrific ordeal, possibly involving being strapped to some kind of alter on the mother ship.

It's no wonder she's in hospital. :(

I find it generally quite despicable that we give all the hangers on so much media attention. The current monarch and the next in line only should receive coverage. I'm tired of reading about all of the others taking the you-know-what at our expense.
 
William is near enough the next in line... If Charles ever gets the chance it surely won't be for long, leaving William as the next long-term monarch. On top of that, it is likely to be his child(ren) whom are the ones to continue the line to the throne anyway - so I think this is pretty pertinent media attention.

The role of the monarch is virtually entirely ceremonial, it's questionable whether the monarch themselves should receive the attention they do, let alone their grandchildren. The royal family are simply laughing at this country.
 
Whilst it is questionable to many whether the royals should receive coverage or even exist, the fact that they do and have a high level of popularity is reason enough for this to be newsworthy in my view.

This is not necessarily a connection between the two but this is break news.

The nurse that answered the phone to the two radio hosts and put them through to the ward has been found dead by apparent suicide.
