Pretty shocking news here:
Daily Mail said:
Hotel manager stabbed at Alton Towers after being mugged outside charity ball
  • Ian Stevenson was stabbed twice in the leg in an employee car park
  • He was working at an annual 'Pink Tie Ball' in aid of a cancer charity
  • Hotel manager was rushed to hospital and is now said to be 'doing OK'
  • 500 Girl Guides camping in Alton Towers grounds were evacuated
  • Police are yet to find the assailant and no arrests have been made

A hotel manager was stabbed outside a charity ball at the Alton Towers Resort as he made his way to his car.

Witnesses said Ian Stevenson stumbled into a hotel foyer with blood pouring from two leg wounds.

He was taken to hospital as police descended on the complex, where an annual 'Pink Tie Ball' was being staged in a hotel function room to raise money for a cancer charity.

The duty manager is thought to have just finished a shift at the Alton Towers hotel - one of two hotels which make up the resort alongside a water park, spa and the main theme park.

Ball guests were prevented from leaving the site for more than an hour, as a police helicopter joined the search for the assailant.

Around 500 Girl Guides were camping in the theme park grounds when the incident began shortly before 11pm on Saturday. They were moved to a 'secure location' as a precaution.

Mr Stevenson, from Stoke-on-Trent, has been discharged from hospital and is recovering at home from his ordeal.

A relative yesterday said: 'Ian is doing OK but we don't want to say any more at the moment.'

One source who had been at the hotel on Saturday said: 'There was a lot of wealthy people at the ball - it is staged every year and attracts lots of local business people.

'Apparently the hotel manager came in to the hotel asking for help.

'He said he had been mugged and then stabbed. He was covered in blood and then he collapsed. He was bleeding badly from his leg.' The source said police arrived and prevented anyone from leaving the site for more than an hour.

News of Saturday night's incident spread to Twitter yesterday. Local teenager Laura Heath, who said she had friends who worked at the theme park, wrote: 'A duty Manager got stabbed in the leg and mugged.towers are kicking off cause(sic) everyone knows'.

Emma Carpenter, the mother of a Girl Guide from Herefordshire who had been camping overnight at the park, tweeted that parents had been notified of an 'incident' by text and said the girls had been 'put in a secure room'.

Volunteer fundraiser Ada Haywood, 62, who organised the Pink Tie Ball, said: 'We were in the function room where the ball was being staged when somebody came in and said police were preventing people from leaving because there had been an incident. The ball was still in full swing and I thought it could be one of our guests involved.

'I went outside to investigate but the staff were in control and told us not to worry.' She said staff from local company JCB were amongst the 340 guests. The event raised in the region of £20,000 for Cancer Research UK.

A spokesman for Alton Towers said: 'We can confirm that an Alton Towers Hotel team member was assaulted last night whilst returning to his car in the employee car park. He is now recovering at home. The police attended the incident and we continue to help them with their enquiries.'

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said the force was alerted at 10.50pm to a report of a male member of staff being assaulted in a car park.

A statement added: 'A search of the area involving a police dog and the force's helicopter took place. No arrests were made.

'The victim, in his 40s, received hospital treatment and is now at home.'

Anybody with information was asked to contact Staffordshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 871.

What a horrible thing to happen. Glad that he is ok and making a recovery at home.

:)

I hope the offender is caught soon! Glad to see that there's a quick response to the incident by Towers/the police and that everybody else is safe.

Shocking to here though.

Least likely place for this kind of thing to happen? A bit worrying that no one's been caught yet also.

Bit of an odd place for this to happen. Going off from those loose details it doesn't sound targeted to that person though, just sounds like a random attack case. Still, last place you would expect something like this to happen.

Hopefully they find the attacker soon.

Very shocking news, perhaps the need for more security or better lighting around the hotels at least

This sort of news is something that could prevent families from going

I wish him a good and quick recovery, and is not too traumatized by the event.

With it happening the night of the annual 'Pink Tie Ball' That has lots of wealthy people attending. I think it may of been a t**** taking a punt on mugging the first well dress person they found, hoping for a big pay day.

I'm glad that this was responded to so quickly. It could have been so much worse. It's fairly worrying that the attacker hasn't been found yet.

Whilst there should obviously be measures to prevent this sort of thing from happening again, I hope this doesn't lead to sweeping security changes across the resort. I would hate the idea of bag searches at the park entrance.

Really sad news I hope he has a full recovery Nobody should have to go through that

Just wondering why it happened and how scary it could be at that time of night on a family resort

I was at AT on Saturday and did wonder why they were fencing off the picnic area but didnt think about it again till i read this, I hope the manager makes a full recovery and the person is caught, very sad news indeed.

Im there again this weekend, lets see if there are any reactions to this nasty event with additional security

As a side note, Ive never once seen a security guard at AT, been 7 times this year, where as at Blackpool I always see them escorting someone out whos normally from north of the border and had too much to drink, does AT have security guards?

Yes they do. Security are based at the trade vehicle entrance, by the barrier. You often see them driving around the resort/park in one of the security vehicles. However there uniforms are not as obvious as say Thorpe's.

:)

You've clearly never been on the first Sunday of Scarefest is you've never seen a security guard... ;)

If you go on a weekend during Scarefest you can usually spot a security guard or two around the hotels. The rest of the year they are there, just more hidden. I kinda prefer them being more in plain sight. There's nothing that kills the 'magic' more than security hovering around every corner.

Im considerably more concerned about the girl guides having their phones taken off them?!
Wherever that is quoted (about the Guides having phones taken off them - by who for starters? the Guide leaders? The park?), I would say the following things about this possible reported 'fact'. Firstly, as a Girl Guide leader who's taken Guides to camp, we recommend not bringing phones to start with - nowhere to charge them and not covered by GG insurance if lost or stolen so brought at the girls own risk.
Secondly, in the case of an emergency we have our own procedures in place by way of a home/emergency contact who is unrelated to any members of the party and who will be the point of contact between the leaders away and parents so they can give the correct information out as to what's going on. Rather than having 20+ parents trying to phone the leaders who are trying to deal with the incident or their daughters directly (who are unlikely to have all the facts). If any phones were asked for by the Guide Leaders, it would be to ensure this system is maintained and calm is kept by all.
I can link you to the page in the Guiding Manual that covers this if you like.

I wonder of this guy was at a bar and refused drink or something. I'm trying to see why he would choose to follow this chap to the staff carpark when he could of easily done it to anyone in the main carpark.

It's possible. I mean, there are any number of reasons why someone insane enough to do this in the first place might target a staff member. Maybe his kid was too short to go on a ride, and he took it out on the first member of staff that he could catch alone?

On the other hand, if you are that deranged that you go around stabbing people, you probably don't need a reason.
