Apple announcement 12/09/12 - iPhone 5?

AshleeKel said:
I got an iPhone 5 today (white 16gb). It's a lovely device, So much better than my HTC (which I traded in for £70).

It's all about the classic black iPhone, I can't see why the white one is becoming so popular. It gets dirty far easier and the white border distracts your vision more from the screen.

T/iNemesis, just because I'm really curious... are you really rich?

And if yes, follow up question: how? As in, what do you do for a living?

Just curious. I mean, an iPhone 5, a new MacBook Pro and a new iPad all in one day... that's more than I've spent on electronics in my entire life...

The iPad I had before the iPhone 5 & MacBook Pro, along with the iPhone 4S (now with fixed screen)!
As for am I rich? Simple answer is no. I just budget correctly in order to be able to treat myself as and when required! I don't go out drinking, wasting money on alcohol, nor do I smoke. I save pretty much every penny I don't spend on essentials, as I see it as needless spending! Doing this means I can actually buy, guilt free when I like!

As for what do I do, I teach in a school & make websites for a living, outside of school.

With respect, even if you work hard for it, if you have an iPhone 5, 4S, an iPad and a MacBook Pro, then you're rich. Even by UK standards, and definitely world standards.

I personally prefer the look of my White 4S to my Black 4 because it doesn't collect as many fingerprints on the back or the front. And in my opinion it looks a lot more modern and fresh.

Not necessarily... And nor does it matter...

If someone earns money... No matter how much or how little, they have the right to spend what they want on it...

And as for psychoasters "simplicity is the key to success" I disagree I would hate to use a one button mouse when doing CAD work as I use 6 buttons on my mouse, left button, right button for the obvious, mouse 4 and 5 and middle mouse button for camera controls. And a last "precision aim" button for lower dpi changes for more accurate selection tools. I also have my dpi changes on the fly, but tend to stick to one dpi setting for CAD work...

For the purposes of the general Mac user, the single click mouse is more than good enough. The Magic Mouse is a sheer work of art. However obviously if you are doing certain types of work, such as CAD work then you will need specialised equipment. Just as graphics designers often use tablets. You can't blame the mouse design on that, because most people won't be partaking in that kind of stuff anyway.

I use the right mouse button to access the context menu on hyperlinks and the mouse wheel to scroll pages and to open links in new tabs in Chrome.

I guess I'm just not Apple's target market! I like being able to change and modify things without having to buy an entire new computer.

An Iphone, Ipad and Macbook? If you can afford them fair play, but are you really going to use them all?

It just seems a bit pointless to me to buy a phone and a bigger version of the phone without the actual phone parts, or depending on what way you look at it a laptop and a smaller, less capable version of the laptop.

I can blame the mouse design on that as I don't like the mouse design, it's a terrible design how much more complicated is a mouse if it has an right click? You don't have to use it but then surely it helps the people who do use it tremendously.

But thats not Apples ethic. You buy our product, you use it OUR way, god forbid us design a product that matches with other peoples requirements and adapt like a good product designer.... nope our closed systems are good enough because we have plastered an apple logo on it.

Now that ethic works for simple devices, devices that have one purpose and not much else, so the ipod's... and to some extent the iphone but computers... no...

So far I can understand why people would use mac, media is often a very good medium on macs, photoshop was originally mac exclusive, and music software is good I've heard, and I can understand people like my sister and cousin who got macs because they are not good with computers, and wanted something simplistic that worked... other then those two demographics I don't understand why macs are used (except as a fashion statement)... and even the first one, a windows computer can run music and art programs just as well... or at least mine can.

Just my two cents, you don't have to agree with me.

EDIT: sorry about the rant... Just bubbled over with Apple hate! :p

I think that the single button mouse is an infuriating and utterly ridiculous user-experience impairing mistake. It's entirely user-unfriendly, and is designed as such for the purposes of form rather than function. Even the most basic of needs in web surfing or checking emails requires right clicking so I don't think anyone really escapes this unnecessary flaw.

I think it pretty much sums up my problem with Mac computers. I love most Apple Mac hardware (particularly those beautiful screens), I love Apple Mac reliability (even though I have had some very bad experiences of the computers freezing and cutting out at college), but the user experience is so unnatural that I find them needlessly difficult to navigate.

I would agree on hardware as much as the screens the resulutions are beautifull... but under the hood of the computers they are terrible for the price..

If you have that much of an issue with the Mac mouse design then you can always buy a normal mouse off eBay that will work with a Mac - probably costs less than a replacement if it broke anyway! It's the same with any piece of design, if you don't like it or it doesn't work the way you want then find something different.

Do you not see anything wrong with this at all?

Paying less for more buttons because the less functional one has an Apple logo?

I get the point, they should have left the original mouse design alone in the first place. I'm not defending that, I'm just saying I don't really have a problem with the single click mouse anyway. I got a wired mouse with the last PC I bought and subsequently replaced it with a wireless one because I didn't like it - it's the same principle.

Fredward said:
Wired mice are better, the latency of wireless is annoying.

I applaud you if you can detect 25ms in general computer usage. ;) A wireless mouse I could only see being an issue if you were doing some intense design work (perhaps as you do) or gaming.

It's more of a problem with gaming, a gaming wireless mouse can go up to £100 :p

So a nice wired mouse is a more sensible solution

Never used a wireless mouse for design work, since I've been using my gaming mouse so can't comment on that.

Yes. I use my iMacs at home, MBP when I'm working for a prolonged period of time away, and the iPad on the road. iPhone as a... Phone. I have a genuine use for them all. I can't exactly write full emails and work plans on my iPhone, hence the iPad. Likewise, I can't create and prepare lessons on my iPhone, hence the MBP for classroom teaching.

As for the MightyMouse one button functionality, have you guys that are slating its simplicity used it? It's a work of art that is seamlessly integrated into OS X. There isn't a need at all for two buttons, one is suffice.
