Blackpool Pleasure Beach: 2023 Discussion

It feels like they are trying to have a similar style to the huge well known names that will run an advert and not even say their name - e.g. Dominos, Starbucks - that 90% of the country know what it is just from the logo on screen. But they're not Starbucks, their logo and what they do/sell isn't already well known by everyone.

It's nicely summed up here - just say what the name is, what you have that is new, make it easy for people.
If it were me, start with the PB exclamation mark at the start and the voice over "Blackpool Pleasure beach presents the world's greatest water ride"
End with "Valhalla... only at Blackpool Pleasure Beach"

I know this is a bit left field but does anyone think a fly on the wall TV show like the one in the 90s would be good for the park? Plenty of streaming services around and I don't imagine it would be an expensive show to produce. Could drum up business/ interest in the park? Just an idea and I appreciate it's not really something that's fully on the parks control.

I honestly don’t see how the 90s documentary did any favours for the park. It showed the Avalanche crash, assaults, thefts, trespassing, drunkenness, staff vandalising the rides, and those wallies selling laser pens.

Yeah ok that might have been the reality of BPB in the 90s but do you really want the public to see that? I think they’d be reluctant to do something like that again.

Unless they produced it themselves, BPB wouldn't have any editorial control or input in what goes into the TV series. Even if they did produce it themselves, no self respecting streaming service would buy it and stream it, as it would be advertorial content and would be labelled in such a manner.

Without editorial control, the producers of the series would be able to pick and choose whatever they want to focus on. Film for a year, or a few months, see which storylines develop and everything going swimmingly is not great content. Everything going swimmingly is not what happens in real life either. Stories and documentaries need a point of conflict, which ultimately means that Blackpool will likely be portrayed in a negative light. Until they get their operations up and running, to an impeccably high standard, they'll keep well away from this.

They could however produce such a series for their own online channels, but they've got to get people to watch those first too.

If they did a documentary series it'd either be self produced and so sanitised it'd likely be boring to watch, or they'd have no editorial control and it'd paint them in a bad light and show their shortcomings.

I don't see it being a particularly attractive proposition either way - they could use the money to buy more petrol pump adverts instead.

What I would love to see them do is a series of 'behind the scenes' shorts. Say 5-10 minute Youtube videos. They would need to be properly recorded and edited (so a proper camera on a tripod - no mobile phone footage!!). There is so much that they could cover and some of it I'm sure would go viral.
Things like:
- what maintenance do before park open
- How they walk the Big One track
- Sneek peeks inside thing like the Valhalla show building
- All the hidden places in the Pleasure Beach
- Stories behind the attractions - like the story of Cloggy
- How the rides work
- Q&A's with people like the engineers, show techs etc.

There is so much that they could have their own weekly series. The regularity would not only get people engaged but would build a viewership which could be advertised to.

Whilst it's a great idea, it is costly. They could have a small in house unit, but that would require a decent bit of investment. They could pay freelancers do it it, but then you've got to see a direct return on the investment. What your arguing for, which I used to do, is content marketing.

It's cheaper, and easier, for them to give access to YouTubers with established audiences, in the hope that the stuff they give them peaks people's interests. That's why channels are allowed to film their special events etc. They could be doing more to engage with content creators, but again they have no editorial control over this process either.

When I worked in TV we made sports filmed with cheap equipment look pretty good. The question would be, do PB have the gear and does anyone have the idea?

Oh I'm sure you did, I'm more on about spending money on the crew. You can get / rent kit for peanuts and make it look amazing if you know what you're doing. It's the people who know what they're doing that cost the most.

I've not thought about this at all, I have also not written a draft marketing proposal.... because that would be sad. That said, if I had I would suggest hiring a Social Media Executive apprentice on £16k to look after the social media for the park, I would also suggest that 1 day a week would be allocated to creating Social Media content - which this would be a part of.

Seriously though, they need to up their Social Media game as it costs so little and can have a huge impact on the bottom line.

Never again, well not in November anyway. Being on the ride & drenched is one thing, but the wait, even in a short queue, each time, that gives you time to think about how wet you are & start shivering, is not good. Did it because we are sick weirdos, wanted to punish ourselves and beat our previous record of 18. Still did it, but stopping one short of the magical 20 did suck a bit. Lots of fun though. Very good.
