Blackpool Pleasure Beach: General Discussion

I can only assume there will be a "no refunds if you chicken out" clause. It still amazes me that when we had the Air lift walk a couple of years ago, several people from a group of enthusiasts didn't make it all the way to the top... And Air's lift a) is rock solid with rails on both sides, and b) isn't even higher than the trees next to it. There's going to be a lot of members of the GP that freak out climbing that thing!
 
It's overpriced.

So it's £35 to walk up some steps.... But the express lift is included in the wristband...

And for about £10 less you can go down the road and go up a tower more than twice as high. Mandy is definitely a genius.
 
It does seem ridiculous, £35 to go up a lift hill. However if people are prepared to pay that price then good on BPB for doing it, I don't blame them at all!

Although it is expensive it is good to see parks offering 'behind the scenes' experiences. Busch do some fantastic reasonably prices ones over in the states.

I did it for free on Halloween, I'd love to have another evac it was brilliant! ;D


Just to add to that...

The Big Dipper and the Grand National structures will receive no more paint, BPB are going to be replacing all of the wood over the next 10 years (I think this is just an estimate). There are currently no new rides planned for next year and the next addition to the park will be a thrill ride, they are also looking into possibly reopening the Monorail next year with a new power system and trains. :)
 
Replacing all of the wood will be a mistake. Give me the Grand National over The Big One or InFusion any day. Getting rid of the woodies is like peeing all over BPB's history.

They're not getting rid of them, they're just not going to paint any replacement wood. All wood on the rides is gradually replaced, meaning the rides can effectively last forever if taken care of.

It will be a relatively minor change to Grand National, which isn't very visible from around the park, however it will take some getting used to on Big Dipper.

Aaaah, sorry, I misunderstood the post and thought they were getting rid. In that case this is good news :)

The problem with Blackpool's woodies being painted white is that the sea air degrades the paint very quickly and makes them look shabby.

I think woodies always look better in a natural wood colour anyway, so this is good news. As John said this constant wood replacement has always been part of on-going maintenance, but the way you phrased it Michael makes it sound like a more major project. Is there going to be some re-profiling work or something?

But no, in all seriousness this does sound like its the start of some major work to secure the future of the coasters! Which I see as a great thing, especially if it did involve a bit of re-profiling! I certainly wouldn't go a-miss anyway!

And I agree Sam, I also think woodies do look & age better aesthetically, in their natural colours! So for me, this is great news! Should make both rides look a lot less shabby and much nicer to look at, and if profile work is carried out, hopefully better to ride too! That said, I also agree with John, it will take so getting used to at Blackpool!

I think the rides will remain the same, they are probably just doing what they normally do throughout the winter period and replace the rotten wood on the rides. The Big Dipper will probably look a mess for quite a while.
 
I don't think they are getting rid of the woodies just replacing the wood in them gradually. Like replacing a fence one plank at a time (on a much bigger scale of course)

Can't get rid of them anyway because they are listed (I think)

After going on the dark rides at the park yesterday with Jordan, I'm still incredibly intrigued as to how Thrill-O-Matic, River Caves and Ghost Train work around each other's space being in the same clump considering how the park has built rides one on top of the other.

Are there any layouts of these particular rides online anywhere for me to take a look at?
