Busch Gardens Williamsburg: General Discussion

Rob, only your last image loads for me on the photo post dated 7th August. Don't quite know why that is (but I'd like to see them :D)

Just seen this and not too sure why that's the case. Try taking a look on BGWFans

Another photo from TPR, worlds most beautiful theme park...

Why, just why?

:)

It appears that the zoology department is getting big cuts for 2015. The park have got rid of nearly 50 animals with them being handed to other SeaWorld parks or other regional zoos. More bad news for a park that I adore.

I have read that the SeaWorld parks are having to share $50 million worth of cuts between them.

:)

So the track for the still unannounced coaster at BGW is now complete, photos from zachclarke2 on TPR:

Apparently they are not going to officially announce the coaster until March (which is also when the park opens). Seems to be a mad decision, I do not get it when parks do not promote the new rides they build on social media etc. What better way is there to let potential visitors know about what you are doing? I can only assume marketing at BGW has taken a cut also. Either that or they are so embarrassed by it that they don't want to admit it exists!

:)

Is this really from the same park that has Alpengeist, Griffon, Loch Ness Monster and previously had Big Bad Wolf?

I really don't believe it.

I don't see the appeal of these rides at all. I imagine the throughout on them is pretty atrocious too?

For a big park like BGW yes it is. I think I posted something about throughputs earlier on in this topic. Despite the fact that this will have three cars forming its train rather than two the throughput will still be low. They are getting this as a relatively cheap but instant thrill hit (marketing it would help with that though).

:)

Oh come on. It may be crap, but there are far uglier coasters in the UK, never mind the world.

Sure they may not be the best looking rides in the world, but you can't say anything until you've ridden one. This kind of ride is in my opinion one of the best clones out there, and whilst it is almost always preferable for a large park like this to get a unique ride, evidently it's not always possible. Strategically better rides for throughput could've been chosen, however this rides experience is pretty unique and exhilarating.

My concern is at the execution of the theming. Is it known what theme they are going for yet? Because I sure as hell would hate to see a ride based on Italian mono-cycles in a circus act next to a ride inspired by a gods chariot.

I've ridden Sky Scream at Holiday Park and I have visited BGW which is one of my favourite theme parks in the world. These two thing are not meant to be together!

It is a decent coaster however it is somewhat ruined by the awfully uncomfortable restraint across your legs. It does provide a good thrill for a small footprint and relatively small cost and that is exactly why they have gone for the model. But we are talking about the park that has been voted as the world's most beautiful theme park for 23 years in a row. The structure of this coaster is just ugly and it ruins some of Apollos Chariot's asthetics. Throughput is also going to be a major issue, the park's current front line coasters are all throughput machines.

And yes your concern should also be the 'theming'. I had posted plans showing the details of this but I believe the photo links no longer work. However you should be able to find details somewhere over on BGWFans.

:)

It's okay if a medium size park gets a coaster like this (Like Superman: Ultimate Flight at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom), but this Busch Gardens in Williamsburg we're talking about! Not only is it one of the most critically acclaimed parks in the US, but also the world. It's been 8 years since the last proper thrill coaster was built there, and it deserves another great like Griffon or Alpengeist. Not this.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but I really can't see this sticking around for very long. Probably be gone in 10 years.

I just don't get why the support structure is so extensive. I'm sure they'd have, at a slightly higher cost, had Premier simplify it a little and make it more aesthetically pleasing. As it is, these rides look like someone's balanced coaster track on scaffolding.

And that is where the problem would lie! This is a relatively quick cheap fix from what I understand.

:)

I too have been on Sky Scream and Busch Gardens Williamsburg.

It is one of my favourite parks.

This ride is shoddy for it.

Those are really really fun thrill rides but the restraints are painful and throughout low. I don't mind the aesthetics so much.

Sky Loops always seemed to me like the kind of coaster that an average park would invest in, not a great park like BGW. It's a very odd choice indeed and will stick out like a sore thumb.

More bad BGW news:

Several weeks ago, Busch Gardens Williamsburg (BGW) released their 2015 operating schedule to the eager masses of future vacation-planners. But the initial reactions to the new hours for the park’s upcoming 40th anniversary season have been less than favorable. Busch Gardens has, unfortunately, been subjected to major budget cuts due to ever-increasing financial troubles throughout their parent company, SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment. These cuts have inevitably made their way through the multitude of park departments and into the operating schedule. The schedule for both Busch Gardens Williamsburg and its water park, Water Country USA can be viewed below.

2015-Op-Schedule.jpg

One of the first things you may notice is that opening day is set to be pushed further back into March than in previous seasons. On February 13th the Park announced that Pass Member Preview Day will be on March 21st, a week later than in the past. Unlike in past seasons, however, the park will not open the day after Pass Members are able to get their first visit. Instead, they will be opening the weekend after.
The schedule looks fairly typical until the month of July. Unlike in years past, when the park was open until 10 p.m. on weekdays during peak season (July through early August), they are now closing at 9 p.m. However, weekends are still scheduled to have 10 p.m. closing times. Without the later weekday closings, the nightly fireworks that park patrons have come to expect from the infamous summer events of the last few seasons may not happen this year. While many people may be more than happy if the park decided to scrap the idea of a summer event, its absence has yet to be confirmed.

In September hours have been reduced throughout the later half of the month. This change suggests a later start of the Park’s favored Fall event, Howl-O-Scream, which started nearly 2 weeks earlier in both 2013 and 2014. However, if we look at the month of October, we see that Friday hours are now extended to 11 p.m. While this is a puzzling change, it’s good to see hours increased in a way that may be more reasonably attempted as opposed to the ill-fated plans for midnight closings on Saturdays in 2014. Another noteworthy addition is the November 1st end to the regular operating season, which is one weekend later than usual.

The first thing to note about Christmas Town is the later start of the Winter season due to the extension of Fall operations into November. The main concern with this change will be the shorter amount of time BGW will have to redecorate from Halloween to Christmas. Other than the later start, Christmas Town’s operating hours are, for the most part, the same. In total, the park has managed to lose only one operating day for the 2015 season (compared to the 2014 season); down from 190 operating days last season to 189 operating days this upcoming season.

At first glance Water Country USA’s operating schedule seems unchanged. It opens on the same weekend as it did last year and ends on Labor Day, as it did last year. However, like Busch Gardens, Water Country USA seems to have cut weekday hours during peak season. Unlike Busch Gardens, the number of operating days for Water Country USA is actually increasing from 104 last year to 110 this year due mostly to when Labor Day falls.

Not drastic cuts at first glance but cuts non the less. All of these cuts really do sadden me, I wish SeaWorld sold the Busch parks to owners who could actually afford to care.

:)
