I'm a bit bemused by the local lockdown in Leicester. So hospitality won't open and non-essential shops and schools will close again, but what's to stop people travelling outside of Leicester to get their shopping or drinking fix?

If you're not going to contain people within the local lockdown area it could be self-defeating and potentially spread the virus to neighbouring areas.

The common sense of the great British people....!

I do worry that this is how it is going to spread again. You get an outbreak in one area that should have been addressed sooner, introduce some measures, then a proportion of idiots in that area decide to travel elsewhere to pubs, restaurants, hairdressers etc. and a proportion of those in turn have the virus without knowing and spread it. I hope that I am wrong and the restrictions on Leicester (and parts of Leicestershire although these areas still have not been announced) work.

I would have liked to have seen it staggered more. Instead of opening big groups of things every 3 weeks why not trial 1 thing each week? Let's say they opened hairdressers on the 27th, Theme Parks on the 4th and Pubs on the 11th. That would be more gradual without taking longer. And if there's a sudden spike it would be easier to pinpoint what caused it.

Completely, and absolutely, all my punters are blaming one person for recent events in the cities, on the beaches, and the coming second wave.
Step forward again Mr Cummings.
Looks a bit like Myxomatosis in humans to me.

I'm pleased that I've not gone any further than our garden in the past few months and will continue to do so until it is safe to do so :D

I had to laugh last night when it was announced on the News that people can now get marriage, but they must sanitise their hands before and after exchanging of the rings, who thinks up these rules and what on earth do the government think that the newly weds will be doing later that night, washing hands before and after the exchanging or rings is going to be completely pointless

So it begins. The second wave. The second wave people seemed to think we wouldn't get because it had not happened yet. Depite us being one of the hardest hit countries. Despite us not being over the first wave and despite history telling us that second waves do not happen as fast as people seemed to think it would. The hospital admissions at the moment though. Seems relatively low. Time will tell how minor or serious it will get.

Its not a second wave, just a re-emergence of the first wave.

Hopefully people will have common sense and remain in Leicester and actually lockdown so we don't see another widespread issue and cases going back up.

if People had common sense then the infection rate wouldn’t get so high. To expect people of Leicester to just accept it is mind boggling they will just travel further away to do what they want to do while possible spreading the infection. Unfortunately unless you block all roads in and out of a city there’s no way to contain it.

I mean this is absurd. There's no doubt that Dominic Cummings is a class-A moron, and that his actions and defiance of the lockdown was abhorrent, but to think that none of the subsequent social-distancing-ignoring actions seen across cities and beaches etc. would've happened had he not been an idiot is stupid.

Well you answered your own statement, there is a way to contain it, for people to have common sense and stay home and save lives instead of travelling outside of the city or socialising with other households. If people weren't selfish and thought of others and used common sense then local lockdown will work. But if people are selfish and continue to gather in groups and travel to other cities then we will have to go back to national lockdown and many small businesses will go out of business.

However it give people an excuse/defence for action they where already going to do.

Thats like at school when having been told off, someone replies " well Tom did it first".

People need to be adults and stop being selfish, just because someone else did it, it doesn't make it right, but equally everyone has their own emergencies and that doesn't mean you have the same needs.

Im not saying I agree with all my right wing, country shire dwelling customers are saying, far from it...I'm just reporting it!
They are all strictly following the rules, but are beginning to wonder why they bother.
And I'm not telling them they are stupid, they pay me a good hourly rate.
On to "the second wave" in Leicester.
It is all a bit of semantics and pedantics.
It is really the second wave, when where the first cases in the city?
I presume the local infection rate went up, then down, then up again?

If you look at the Daily Mail today (usual DM warnings) then the whole country is on the brink of lockdown again

My thinking is to count as a "second wave" cases need to get down to near zero and then back up again. So up, down a little and up again is a re-emergence of the first wave. Up, down to almost zero and up again is a second wave and could happen in China, New Zealand and other similar countries.

I think a second wave needs to be where it goes down to either zero cases or an incredibly low number near to zero and then have a sustained rise in cases for an extended period of time. Personally, I wouldn’t count what any country has seen so far as a second wave bar potentially Iran.

To me, the cases in places like China, Germany & South Korea are localised outbreaks that were kept under control by track & trace.

The situation in the USA is a resurgence of the first wave as opposed to a second wave. As Anthony Fauci, America’s chief medical officer, said, the USA was never out of its first wave of infections.

We're just going to have a US situation, Boris will try lockdown in select areas but then will just make us get on with it so the country doesn't go broke. Sad times.

I think the US is quite different, at least here the national government is demanding local lockdown, whereas in the US they seem reluctant to push anything and increasingly seems to be relying on business owners and unions to do the job of the government.

The us is also structured more like it has a load of Scotland's and Northern islands, power is devolved to the states.

This isn't a second wave - as people have pointed out, it's just fluctuation that's to be expected. But...

Does it really matter exactly what we call this? It's just semantics really, isn't it? Any which way, an increase in infections is bad...
