Efteling: General Discussion

I saw it for the first time in April. My review can be summed up by Dutch Medieval Power Rangers.
The horses and the dragon looks really cool up the until the knights start spinning and rolling around in the sand while pyrotechnics go off.

Seems like the new Danse Macabre programme is quite problematic:

Danse Macabre has been running almost flawlessly for the past six months, but since last week, technical problems have been occurring regularly. In seven days, the attraction had to be closed no less than ten times due to a malfunction. The reason: a new ride program , introduced on Thursday, May 15.

Not a day went by last week without a malfunction. In total, Danse Macabre was out of service for 739 minutes during the park's opening hours. That amounts to a downtime of no less than 18.7 percent. Efteling aims for a downtime of no more than 2 percent for new attractions, the management said earlier.

So far, yesterday has been the best. Danse Macabre remained closed all morning due to technical issues: the gates could only be opened at 2:50 PM. Efteling knows where the sudden closures come from: the update that was implemented last week is causing teething problems.

They are working hard to fix the defects as quickly as possible, says a spokesperson. Sometimes they only come to light when the attraction has been in operation for a long time. The spokesperson cannot go into detail about the specific technical elements that are currently causing problems. He also does not dare to say when the teething problems will be over.

For the time being, Efteling visitors must therefore take into account that they may find themselves in front of a closed gate at Danse Macabre. The horror attraction was built last year by manufacturer Intamin from Liechtenstein. The attraction type, a dynamic motion stage, does not yet exist anywhere else in the world. In the new ride program, the movements are more intense than before .

It did go down on the old program for about 15 minutes when I queued for it in April (was stuck in the dark outside the ride room), so it wasn’t without its problems then, though they got it fixed quickly. Given though it’s a prototype and a spectacularly complicated piece of tech it’s not suprising that there would be issues at some point.

I don’t really know why they changed the cycle - though it is more intense, the new cycle appears to be shorter too if I’m right so maybe to increase capacity further?

Interesting incident on the Pirana rapids, where a boat got stuck in place resulting in the occupants getting repeatedly soaked by the sprays (much like a recent incident at Legoland).... until one passenger climbed out and pushed off the side with both legs to successfully get the boat back on track!

A textbook case study of the difference in European and British theme parks you could say.

Liseberg: Are you copying us? Your drone video and new hotel name is very similar to our drone video and hotel name.
Efteling: It's purely coincidental, promise.
Liseberg: You also have an opulent minimalist aesthetic going on and a gold staircase chandelier. And a bar/cafe area with checkered tiling.
Efteling: Coincidence. Besides, we're not hoarding knick knacks like you are.
Liseberg: At least you don't have a rooftop bar, an indoor carousel or a slide in reception.
Efteling: We have neither of those BUT we have something even better: A terrace to watch Aquanura on!
Liseberg: Is that it? Just a terrace?
Efteling: Hey, remember that time when you nicked our Droomvlucht theme for your suspended fairy tale dark ride?
Liseberg: ... Well, yes, but we bulldozed it to build a better B&M Dive Coaster layout than whatever Baron 1898 is meant to do.
Efteling: ... Damn, you got us there.

Efteling are no longer allowing school trips except for Primary schools as they cause too much irritation to other guests. I assume Merlin will follow suit.

Also interestingly in the article, the park are not allowed more than 5 million visitors a year and already had 4.9m last year. A problem i'm sure many parks would love to have.

I wish Merlin and other theme parks including PortAventura would follow suit because it's smart especially the cap for school trips.

I'm glad Efteling are being mindful of the guest experience with school trips and making sure it's limited so the schools don't take over and ruin it all for the average non-school guest.

I'm going to be honest, I don't think Merlin, PortAventura or any major theme park will think about that or dismiss the idea very very quickly

Tbh, Efteling may also stop them due to the 5m annual limit, Merlin parks offer school tickets for pennies vs the gate price and they also have a low secondary spend along with visitor behaviour.

I’m sure they would rather the higher gate price if they are capped at 5m

It’s not that cheap really at Merlin parks to the average price guests pay- secondary school pricing is from £18 (off peak) to £26 (super peak ie July) per student. Merlin would not turn away that revenue.

Yes but that’s still bargain basement pricing vs even most offers.
It is but when you get a school like the one I previously worked at taking 250 students - that’s one booking worth £6,500 excluding spending money that the kids then spend on food etc.
I do agree though about how it effects other guests but it’s been the same way for past 30 years+ so can’t see Merlin changing it anytime soon.
