Definitely my attitude to everything that I own, I always try and mend and make do

I've owned my sports car for the past 11 years, it's only ever let me down when out just the once and all that it required was a new radiator cap. Past most of it's MOT and when it did fail, it was simply an odd bulb needing replacing or some new brake pads.

But as long as technology advances, so will cars (no matter how they may be powered). People will always want a new car with new gadgets and gizmos at some point. Will this change? Again it would take a huge culture shift.

So would you either stop car manufactuers putting new technology into cars, or stop consumers purchasing a new car unelss there is officially written off for whatever reason/reaches an age limit (meaning people could be forced to drive 20 year old cars with none of the latest tech)?

Both ideas seem far from ideal.

I personally wouldn't be seen dead in a Clio let a lone driving one for 1000+ miles a week (I do apologise to any Clio owners out there and there are also other inferior cars available)

Take your car as an example then, as lovely as it is, surely trips of more than 10 miles are less than pleasant? No wifi, no carplay, no spotify, no DSG, low driving position, high road noise, stiff suspension, no cruise control, no lane assist, no pre-sense, and more importantly, no seats that massage your back.

I'm being ridiculous of course, but these things are important if your doing high millage, old cars just don't have these sort of driver aids compared to modern cars. As Rob pointed out, as technology moves on, so does society; what was once considered 'luxury' is now deemed as 'necessary.'

And it's not just about technology. Personal circumstance plays a part.

You pass your driving test and get your first car. You go for something small and affordable, even though you know that you will not be able to change this car for another 20 years or so because of silly government dictation. You just did not feel comfortable driving a bigger car at the time, even if you could have afforded it. 10 years down the line and your car is still going well, it's not fallen behind technological advances too much. But you now have a family. Travelling anywhere as a family in your small first car is horrible and cramped, but there is nothing you can do about it.

The above example sounds stupid and illogical because it is. And it clearly will never happen!

Presumably you travel for work? I think you work for the wrong company, mate.

Personally, I wouldn't spend c£70k on a car either.

Who needs wifi in a car‽ You're supposed to be looking at the road, not facebook! The only in car entertainment you ever need is a 3.5mm audio input jack and a subwoofer the size of Tibet.
(Or for the truely oldschool, an 8 track).

No offence intended, I've owned a couple of small cheap cars and they turned out to be some of the best cars that I've owned. I'm sure a Clio is a great car, but I've never owned one, so it's not for me to criticise

I usually do quiet a few miles on each trip and I must say that my car is very comfortable, it has to be due to Jessica's medical condition and yes we do fit all of her wheelchair into the car.

As for mod con's, you can usually buy aftermarket ones and fit these yourself as I've carried out a few mod con's on my car.

This is our favourite car that we have ever owned, hence why we still own it after 11 years.

I fully agree with this quote and it really annoys me when the next generation of people complain about what they don't have and what they are entitled too. They were lucky that they weren't brought up in their parent era as well as their grandparents and their great grand parents and their.............

Oh by the way, I haven't owned a mobile phone in about 10 years let alone a smart phone, only today I've just picked up my very first smart phone, but I will only be using it for emergencies when out and about, as when I'm out, I won't be doing social media as I like to spend quality time with my wife as well as enjoying my day out, my phone will be switched off (except for in an emergency)

I assume you don't drive?

It's not for Facebook, more for work unfortunately. Stopping at the services and firing up the laptop or for reading emails on the go. (Reading, as in listening.)

I means no offence either, you've got a lovely motor - I totally get why you would keep cars too, and I certainly am not suggesting there's anything wrong with keeping older cars, hell, I wish I'd have kept a couple that I had. I must be honest though, i'd struggle with something that isn't new now, especially when it only costs me a token amount of tax for the fuel.

You're doing pretty well to keep away from a smart phone. I must say, I'm envious.

The number of cars being produced is unnecessarily high. This is why the majority are bought on finance or rented. The government is encouraging people to get into debt for no reason.

A pause of the construction of new cars would increase the value of second hand ones, stimulating the second hand car markets and the mechanics - not the debt providers and bloodsuckers ruining people's lives.

The constant production of new cars is damaging to us in numerous ways, environmental and economic ones.

It's the same with the unnecessary levels of house building, but perhaps that's one for another day.

Or in the case of our local council, compulsory purchasing a greenbelt floodplain farmland, regrading it to a brownfield site, then giving the land to a housebuilder for nothing is also a problem, gonna be fun seeing how they cope when these supposedly intended to be affordable houses but really are quarter of a mill each mini palaces cope next time it rains hard...

But as you say, discussion for another day....
