Emerald Park (Formerly Tayto Park), Dublin: General Discussion

It's a lot bigger and more themed that I was expecting!

Puts Altons and Thorpes log flumes *cough* to shame!

Wow!

Congratulations Tayto.

Of all the decommissioned attractions at AT, The Flume is the only one I miss.

For the price of Nemesis Sub terror and Ice Age, they could have had a flume of this size and quality and with great theming.

Towers, we need one of these.

Next time you have 6 million to spare, can we have one of these, a fantastic, top theme park worthy investment that will be there for 30 years, rather than a couple of gimmicky midway level attractions that create limited interest and are gone within 4 years?

Agree that it looks great, but Alton had a flume for decades. And while it remained popular, it was eventually simply part of the furniture in the park, as it were. Alton's reputation for innovation means they're unlikely to ever install a straight-forward anything ever again. But I agree that it doesn't neccesarily mean gimmicks are the answer.

TAYTO PARK HAS applied for planning permission to build a seven-storey hotel on the site of its theme park in Co Meath.

Documents for the planning application, which have just been filed with Meath County Council, state that the development will be roughly 32,000 sq m in size, contain 250 bedrooms and have the capacity to house up to 1,000 guests.

The seven-storey family hotel will include a leisure centre which will feature a junior play area and a parents’ lounge. The family leisure pool will also house a slide, an exercise pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and plunge pool.

The ground floor will contain meeting rooms and a function room with space for up to 1,200 people. There will also be three restaurants in the hotel and two sky bars on the upper levels.

The company said it expects that the hotel will have 272 full- and part-time staff once completed, with 150 people employed over the construction period.

Tayto Park was first opened to the public in November 2010 and was the brainchild of Ray Coyle, who had a long association with Tayto Crisps.

The Irish businessman has bankrolled some significant investments at the Meath-based theme park since it was opened and advanced a €10 million loan to the company for the development of the its flagship wooden roller coaster.

The park said the roller coaster cost a total of €12 million and was part of a €26 million investment, which also included a wider upgrade to facilities at the site.

The park is one of the country’s biggest tourist sites and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

The holding company behind the park, Ashbourne Visitor Centre Limited, made a profit of just over €5 million in the year that ended December 2015, up from €1.5 million in 2014, according to the most recently-available accounts.

The tower for the ziplines do you mean?

I meant to the left of that, thought it could be a construction site. might be the dinosaurs but I can't tell.

On a side note, when do you reckon the flume will be open at the earliest, I'll be the next weekend (around 3 June) and I'm quite sure i'll miss it, but is there any chance?

I was there today and one of the workers told me it was due to be ready around the 12th June ... sorry ...

It's sad time when a small park in Ireland that no-one had even heard of a few years ago is making better investments than most UK parks. That hotel looks fantastic! It will be interesting to see what the rooms are like, will they be plastered in vinyls I wonder!?

:)

Oh that bit of land! It's not a construction site but they stored the boats and some machinery for the flume there. Other than storing stuff for the park it currently has no purpose but I imagine that is land for future attractions.
