Of ALL the years to do this, D…May have to stock up on popcorn.
Going to be introducing some American friends to the show tonight. They have no idea what they are in for.

To everyone last year that said 'the people know what whey want, lets get rid of the judges vote'... the UK public gave 12 points to Israel. A mediocre song that could only have been politically driven.
Still, at least the actual good acts ended up on top regardless!

I ended up watching some of it , despite my misgivings.I wanted Croatia to win, but congratulations to Switzerland!
Croatia should have won. A modern day Tenpole Tudor (if you know , you know)
Glad UK got ZERO from the public vote. Exactly what it deserved.
But a guy in a skirt won. And to think at one time it was women in skirts being ripped off that won. It's a whole different world .
Maybe I am just stuck in the 80s

Well, this was quite a Eurovision though for all the wrong reasons from the banned Dutch entry to Israel just being there and the protests around it. Switzerland I supposed deserved the win although Croatia IMO were my (perhaps uninspired pick given they were favourites).
UK, despite getting zero from the public vote is rather brutal IMO (twice had this happened since they redid the votes?) at least they had a respectable outcome compared to other UK entries which is saying a lot. My Mum though hated it complaining that nearly 90% of the songs lacked variety this year, make what you will of that.
And thank God that during the final voting they don't tease the 12, 10 and 8 points award like before which I utterly despised with me losing count with me crying 'Get on with it!' At the TV wanting to punch the god damn announcer for being such a bloody damn poser trying to have painful banter with the host and that did put me off watching Eurovision for many years.
At least now it's straight to the point with the voting which I appreciate so well done for that small but positive change which I appreciate IMO. But yeah, a very weird Eurovision this year which given the controversies might not be looked back on fondly.

It was eye opening to watch along with a Texan who had never even heard of EV before two days ago. (spoiler, he loved it)
Trying to explain all the politics and history was just..... funny.
*songs finish*
Texan: So, we got, like ten minutes left?
Me: Oh no mate. The show hasn't even started yet. You know how you have the Superbowl half time show? Well we have that while we wait for the real contest to start!
I would have been happy if any of these four won: Ireland, Finland, Croatia, Austria.
Can accept Switzerland. They were a close fifth for me.
As far as politics goes, A friend voiced this opinion, and I have to agree:
In future, the only safe option is to outright ban any country currently involved in any armed conflict, whether victim or aggressor, anywhere on the globe. And yes, that means the UK would pretty much be NEVER allowed to compete.
Nuke the planet from orbit, It's the only way to be sure.
Edit to add:
I love that my Texan friend went from "What the [blank] is this [bleep]‽" To "this is the most bat[bleep] thing I've ever seen and I want more!" In the space of twenty minutes.

Lot of people so salty about Croatia coming in second because they did really well in the televote whilst seemingly ignoring that without the jury Israel clearly would've won. Which they also would've been upset about.
Swiss entry was very good in terms of the technical singing and staging aspect. Nemo also seemed lovely as well (unlike the Swiss entry a few years ago that I absolutely enjoyed seeing the arrogant smug look taken off his face). And trusting the bookies is NEVER a good idea.
I was surprised how well Ireland did though. Very pleased for them given the amount of bollocks being thrown their way due to "satanism". Was probably the best staged performance of the night but I am slightly biased towards the metal genre.

I usually lean towards my raver roots (not that I've ever disliked metal). But Ireland was just so damn hardcore that I loved it instantly. How it ever came out of one of the most christian countries east of the Atlantic is a whole other question though!

To parallel Diogo's story of watching the show with someone who has never seen it before, I watched it this year with someone that used to watch it 30 years ago (and is a big ABBA fan).
It was rather funny, if frustrating how they complained after every act that the show wasn't what it used to be. They should go back to just signing (as if musical tastes hadnt shifted in the last half century), and it was much better when the UK used to do well.
When it came to voting they even commented on how political it had become, then picked their favourites based on all the countries they'd visited (despite having hated the acts).
Sadly I get the feeling that there's a lot of people who feel this way. As I remember after watching the show last year someone commenting "why do you watch that show, we never win anymore" (lets just ignore that we came 2nd 2 years ago).
I enjoy watching the show because it's a spectacle. You never quite know what will happen, what with it being a complete mix of contrasting cultures. And usually I enjoy the drama when it does get political, although this year did get out of hand.

Yes, but as shakey says, he is stuck in the eighties, when non binary meant any number other that 0 or 1.Nemo is non-binary … not a “guy”
And lets shoot down the pedantics who want to nitpick over 0 not being a number.
Back on topic, the show is becoming like F1...
Just not what it used to be.

I felt this was a weaker year for Eurovision. Most of the songs are forgettable, and the politics has shrouded the competition more than usual. I had to laugh at Graham Norton’s ‘a very mixed reaction here’ after the Israel performance after all we heard at home was stock sound cheers on the TV.
I was rooting for Ireland. Simply for the great staging and how ‘out there’ it was. The true winner for me.
As for Olly, the staging was good; the song wasn't great, but his vocals really let his performance down. I'm shocked at how bad he is at singing live. It's interesting how in the BBC News article today, “What does the UK have to do to win?” there's no mention of vocals. To answer their question, step one is to get someone who can sing. We would have done far worse if it weren't for the staging and Olly’s stage presence/charisma.
Switzerland is a respectable winner, and Nemo seems sweet. Nemo breaking the trophy at the end… someone needs to get the superglue out!

Probably best I don't comment on the non binary thing. So yes , let's leave it with me stuck in the 80s !!Yes, but as shakey says, he is stuck in the eighties, when non binary meant any number other that 0 or 1.
