I've been saying Wenger should either resign or be sacked for a good 7 or 8 years now and my reason for that hasn't changed and it completely sums up Arsenal. The club has a huge culture problem, lacks leadership and ambition. By the end of the noughies, the excuses had begun. It was always injuries which ruined their season, or they didn't have the spending power of United or Chelsea. I understand that sacrifices were made to pay for the new stadium, however, Wenger has repeatedly said that the team is ready to compete and win titles yet every season they start off well, look promising, then when the pressure is on they fade away, go out of the CL in the RO16 and clinch top 4 and Wenger and the board convince everyone that it's good enough. YEAR. ON. YEAR. And the real issues are forgotten about. It's so boring. If you follow me on Twitter I have a pop at Arsenal a lot (so much even I'm becoming bored of Tweeting about them) and it'd be easy to think I'm anti-Arsenal. However I grew up watching the likes of Henry, Bergkamp, Vieira. Where are these sorts of players now?! I loved (and hated, being a United fan) watching Arsenal.
No club is entitled to anything, but they're stuck in a rut where they say that 4th is good enough. Can you imagine managers like Jose, Pep, Fergie accepting that fourth is good enough for a club like Arsenal!? Wenger looks like a rabbit in headlights and with every game gone his legacy is being tarnished. Who benches Sanchez against Liverpool? Who benches Cech, their only Champions League winner, vs Bayern!? They have no leaders and their star players (aside from Sanchez) go missing in the pressure games. The games which really matter. Özil for example is the most overrated player in the Premier League and the fact they've offered him £280k a week is laughable. They care more about selfies and social media than what happens on the pitch. People have criticised Sanchez for throwing tantrums for being subbed and having a go at players not putting in the effort, that's because he wants to win! The 10-2 was an absolute disgrace. Simply put, you should not be getting beat 10-2. 5-1 twice by the same team in the space of a few weeks. Ultimately, the manager is to blame for this.
I completely support the fans protesting and calling for his sacking/resignation. He should do what is best for the club and fans. Let's remember he is on £8 million per year! He's being completely selfish and stubborn. Gary Neville had a go at fans for protesting. Sorry but if I was paying £1,000+ on a season ticket for the same nonsense every year I'd protest. These fans have a right to voice their opinions. Ask yourself, would you rather your team qualify for the Champions League every season for 20 years knowing your manager has no intention of winning it, or fail to qualify for it a few times but win the competition once or twice in that time? I know what I'd rather have.
Luis Enrique, before the greatest comeback of all time on Wednesday said, "If PSG can score four, we can score six." Wenger, before the 2nd leg against Bayern and also 4 goals down said, "Let’s not fool ourselves, we have a one or two per cent chance. But you never know." One leads with positivity and ambition, the other negativity and aimlessness.
