Galactica: General Discussion

I wouldn't reccomend you ride Commander then, @Snagglemama. ;)

The only ride that's ever made me genuinely ill. It became somewhat legendary around these parts after a trip to Tilburg Kermis a few years back. It's amazing how adding an extra axis of rotation can turn one of the greatest rides ever made in to one of the worst!

That ride is pure evil. I still wasn’t right the following morning after we did it. God bless @Kelpie with her painkillers and water bottles!

Generally speaking the VR is pretty well synced up, but I’ve found it really only takes it to move slightly out and that’s it. On opening day I had it go completely off track after the heartline (as a lot of people seemed to find). The effect was almost like the footage ‘drifted’ around the final turnaround, but the feeling of nausea is almost instantaneous. Commander aside, it’s one of the few rides I’ve felt queasy on.

Either way the novelty’s worn off now, and I’m back to vanilla Air.

I think Galactica would benefit from two separate queues. One for VR and one for non-vr. Both need their own queue time boards as I've seen the VR queue being huge with the non-vr queue being walk on. It put me off riding last month when I saw the queue time was an hour but I can imagine that the non-vr queue was probably short or even walk on

I doubt they will bother with separate queues or queue boards if they are scrapping VR end of the season.

What they could do is have signage for the vr/non vr split repeated throughout the queue so non vr riders can walk on of the only queue is vr riders.

They could always send VR riders to one station and non-VR riders to the other until it gets removed.

How would that work without non-VR riders getting abuse and being accused of queue jumping? (and of course VR riders using it as an excuse to queue jump, and jumping back into the VR queue nearer the station).

Wouldn't work since the train enters the opposite station at the end of the ride, unless they installed VR sets on all seats again and regulated it. This would have been a better system than what they currently have which seems to be causing even more of a problem.

To be honest, all this shows is how an existing ride cannot be retrofitted with a VR system, it doesn't work and every different system to accommodate the VR is flawed. Remove it completely Towers.

They have on a few occasions had it split but just in the bridge without too many issues.

Have one queue, and a headset on every seat. Those that don't want to use VR will leave it in the pouch. This seems like the fairest and easiest system to me

Probably on 1 station again, instantly loses half the capacity and fastrack/RAP ratios increase too so main queue is probably getting 1/3 of the throughput of 2 station operation

2 stations and 3 craft today, John! Well, at the end of the day anyway, unsure how it was at the start.

I'm sure it was staffed for 2 stations, but I've noticed it's been dropping to 1 quite a lot recently due to technical difficulties. I can't imagine the park was busy enough for it to have a 100 minute wait if it was running full capacity.

I hadn't been to AT since 2005 but recently visited and rode Galactica. I am probably quite a biased rider, as I only queued and rode the VR to stay with my group, having had multiple very poor experiences with VR resulting in hours of motion-sickness.

We rode in early June, and Galactica was up in the top 3 highest queues (although overall it wasn't too busy considering the time of year, I think?) along with smiler and of course Wickerman. We queued around 80 minutes for the ride, which I felt completely disappointed by. The VR itself was poor quality, and the whole ride is calibrated to expect you to hold your head up - a very uncomfortable position to be riding in! Naturally, I felt sick getting off the ride and the whole thing seemed to be a waste of time, certainly not something I would do again but I do have positive memories of Air from my previous visit, hazy as those memories are.

The thing which prompted me to write about it is that the rest of my group came off pleased, they were happy (the wait may have been a little long for them but they would ride again) and I saw many others happy with the ride. When we were queuing there was announcements that the non-VR had a 0 minute wait, which explained our confusion watching the trains pass overhead apparently half-empty!

I personally would love if they could, instead of completely scrapping their investment, spend some money to divide the queues early and possibly add both wait-times, to avoid the disparity between the two modes. With some careful marketing, GalacticAIR could really take off and provide a unique experience for those who want it, whilst keeping a polished classic running for long time fans (and those of us who just can't stomach VR at all!)

anyone agree, or everyone thinks it's already sentenced to death by merlin?

No, I absolutely agree. Having two separate queue times, in my eyes would be a godsend as at the minute it's just a guess. On another note, has anyone noticed that you now get split up into different stations at the old photo point? I believe it's to minimize graffiti on the bridge into station one.
