General Hotel Discussion

Those water leaks in the ceiling don't look good. Hopefully they get sorted out as I think having a hotel look like that is worse than how certain parts of the park are.

Meanwhile in splash landings - more theming being ruined! I can't believe they've started work on trashing Cariba Creek now as well with those awful colours.

Just to let people know the hotels are currently reasobably priced! If you book before end of January there is 35% off which means as long as you don't want a Saturday night or to go during August its pretty cheap. Splash Landings on a weeknight is under £100 bed and breakfast.

What are the Splash Landings rooms like?

I've always stayed away because people have mentioned the strong smell of damp and chlorine.

I've never had an issue with damp or chlorine in Splash rooms to be honest...

They're smaller than the rooms in ATH and the beds are smaller too. They are however quite nicely decorated, with lots of bright colours and aged wood (in the style of the original Splash and not the repaints!). They also feature nicer and newer bathrooms but only because the hotel itself is newer.

Overall it's a nice enough place to stay but I think I prefer ATH as the rooms are a little more spacious. Splash is usually cheaper per night though.

Splash is okay if you do not have the money to stay in ATH.

I've been in a room that has a "strong smell of damp and chlorine" - it had more of a chlorine smell though. I cannot remember exactly where the room was because it was a few years ago although it was on the lowest floor I think and near the waterpark (I was in a disabled room mind). Wasn't too much of a concern for me personally but I can understand why some people may not be able to stand the smell.

ATH has always been my favourite. I've stayed at the hotel every year since 1997 with my parents and over those 16 (almost 17) years I've stayed twice in Splash since it opened and 25+ times in ATH. :p I generally prefer the atmosphere in ATH and the size of the rooms. However if I'm on a budget (in terms of Towers) then Splash is good enough.

See I much prefer Splash and will always stay there over ATH! Funny how people's tastes are different. I have never had a strange smell in my room and I have had rooms on all floors over the years!

Oh, and I don't think you can really class Splash as the budget hotel, with it only being about £20 cheaper! You make it sound as if it's about half the price!

That's why I had "in terms of Towers" in brackets. ;) Nothing is cheap at Alton, although some times of the year you can save up to £100 staying in Splash over ATH (I was looking at staying this July and can save £80 staying in Splash! It depends what time of the year you go.) - that's why Splash is usually my choice when I go with friends since it's a little easier on the wallet. :)

Both hotels are fine in my personal opinion normally I do proffer splash

I've stayed in Splash three times now, and loved it every time. I would like to stay in ATH sometime soon as I haven't experienced it yet, although I have been in a room and it was nice!

Personally, I love the communal areas at ATH. Dragon Bar is such a warm, cosy place and really feels magical to me. I've had a couple of lovely meals at Secret Garden, and the gardens lit up at night are just amazing. I'm not as keen on Flambo's and Ma Garritas but that's just personal opinion.

For me, I just love staying on resort. It's not as if it's awkward to get from one hotel to the other, so it doesn't make much difference to me.

I like Splash because the rooms are more fun and more themed. I prefer SG restaurant but not for breakfast, strangely enough!

I also like being able to walk from Splash rooms to the water park in my costume with a towel around me - hate those changing rooms! ;)

I much prefer Splash over ATH where the rooms are concerned.

I've always felt the rooms in ATH are a bit outdated and older feeling (which is why I'm glad that they've planned to refurbish them.) I love the brighter colours and rustic wooden bits and pieces they have around the rooms. I don't even mind that they're smaller; as it's generally just me and my girlfriend who stay in them they feel cosier this way. Also if you get an inward facing one that looks out of the outdoor area of the water park the view is pretty awesome!

I will, however, never eat or drink in Splash. The food in Flambos wasn't amazing the last time I did eat there and from what I've read recently it's gotten worse with the rejig of the restaurant. The food and setting in Secret Garden is just lovely. I also much prefer the bar areas of ATH to Splash as Margs can get a bit crowded and loud whereas I'd much rather just chill cosied up next to the fire in Dragon Bar.

I like both hotels in different ways. Its much more relaxing to sit in ATH in dragon bar having a quiet drink in the evening. But then Margs is better later on when you are a bit more drunk :p Margs is also a much more "fun" looking hotel, where as ATH seems more formal.

Anyway I know it is being discussed in the CBeebies topic, but Alton Towers have announced that they are getting a Postman Pat themed bedroom! Not too sure where its going or if there will be more than one.

A few updates from a quick visit today.

- The rooms on the 3rd floor (reception level) which were being refurbished are now complete. Cleaners were in the rooms and management were around looking in each room, I imagine these will be open to the public this week. The rooms them selves look the same as before, I couldn't see properly in the bathrooms but it looked like they now have glass screens on the bath, rather than the old shower curtain.

- The rooms on the 3rd floor, on the other side of the reception, near the shop are now being refurbished with the new bathrooms

- The 4th floor above reception is still closed for refurbishment, there seems to be a rumor that these are going to be more moon rooms, they have now been closed for a couple of months!

- They have tried to repaint the ceiling where the water damage was, however its very noticeable and I hope it isn't finished! There is also evidence of a leak coming through again! Here is a quick photo I took on my phone, see if you can spot the difference:

They're probably halfway through repainting the ceiling. :) Not even Towers are stupid enough to leave something like that half and half!

Nice to hear the bathroom replacements are going quickly. I hope they completely refurbish all rooms by the end of 2014. I heard a few months back they already have two more room themes finalised so I hope this year they get on with it. The Explorer rooms are screaming out to be re-done to new themes.

I would guess the majority of the hotel will be finished by March opening, maybe before! The whole side of reception is pretty much done, so they are now starting on the other side.

Maybe those staying over at beach party in ATH will be lucky and will get a new bathroom!
