Media Coverage of Alton Towers

Alton Towers Resort and PR agency Mischief have agreed to part company, with the theme park saying there are no plans to hold a pitch "at this stage", PRWeek has learned.

Mischief's remit included working on two seperate attractions for the theme park: its Rollercoaster Restaurant and Galactica, which is Alton Towers' first virtual reality rollercoaster.

A spokeswoman for Alton Towers told PRWeek that Mischief would not be handling consumer PR for the theme park in 2018, but added that there were no plans to hold a pitch for the business "at this stage"

Moment terrified thrillseekers as young as 12 are escorted off Alton Towers ride Oblivion just yards from notorious Smiler rollercoaster after it halts at highest point 180ft in the air
  • Passengers are being escorted off rollercoaster at Alton Towers theme park
  • Oblivion ride, which has 180ft drop, has broken down at its highest point
Passengers are being escorted off a major theme park ride after it stopped at its highest possible point.

Terrified thrillseekers are being helped to safety from the Oblivion ride at Alton Towers in Staffordshire.

The Oblivion ride was opened in March 1998 and features a drop of 180ft with a top speed of 68mph.

It is just yards away from the Smiler rollercoaster - where two teenage girls each lost a leg and 14 others were injured in June 2015.

Witness Alex Heasman-Bailey, 16, told MailOnline that he heard a 'clunking noise' as the Oblivion ride suddenly came to a halt leaving thrillseekers stranded.

He said: 'The passengers were looking around and they were very anxious to step off the ride and onto the stairs because it's quite a high fall.

'I was quite shocked because it's right opposite the Smiler where the incident was a few years ago.'

Alex, from Ipswich in Sussex, added: 'The ride was going up the top then it stopped at the top at an angle and then they were sitting there for quite a while.

'I could see people in helmets with ropes going up to release them from their seats because the ride was completely stopped.

'There's not much space so they were connected to emergency crews by the rope.'

Jack Hughes, 18, who also witnessed the incident, told MailOnline: 'The carriage is completely stuck at the top and it isn't going.

'About six staff all went up with harnesses and started taking the riders off.

'People were gathering around and looking up at the ride. There were a few staff from the nearby shops that were looking up at it as well.'

In June 2015, Vicky Balch, then 19, and Leah Washington, then 17, each lost a leg in a crash on the Smiler rollercoaster after being trapped for hours.

Last year a judge fined Merlin Attractions Operations Ltd, which owns Alton Towers, £5million and branded the theme park 'a shambles.'

Pint of vodka and coke for me please.
Nice to see a "This is not news" comment after the article,
Why do I feel like I've been reading porn after going on the Mail Online site...
dirty dirty dirty.
All your fault skyscraper!

You didn't have to go on the site; that's why i quoted the article!
Reading some of the comments, at least the GP are beginning to realize that the DM is going over the top with these articles.

It's not just the Mail, this has hit all media outlets including the breaking news ticker on Sky News. Laughable really, the exact same thing happened a couple of weeks ago but because some 15 year aspiring journalist (ha) wasn't around to post about it on Twitter it was not picked up at all.

Ride reliability at Towers this season has been woeful though. They need to act.

:)

At the time of posting, Alton Towers is trending on Twitter

Thankfully some sane comments as well as the predictable scaremongering

I'm getting pretty tired of this and I'm sure the management at Towers and even Merlin are as well. Wait a minute, we agree with something!

180ft in the air
Erm, None of the rides at Towers exceed 21m(from ground level) which is about 70ft, such a high exageration. I mean concrete is not air.

Also pretty annoyed hearing his, I was listening to the radio and I heard 'The Oblvion ride at Alton Towers has apperently occording to park officals' then I just turned the radio off in anger.
