My 30th Birthday in Krakow 2013

Well I have decided to do another post on my travels. I will try and make it a little different from the last one which some of you may have read over on TTF.

This was all arranged by Carla as a surprise for my 30th birthday. We last went to Krakow in May 2012 and had such an amazing time we have been talking about it since we visited in May.

This was a short visit to Krakow leaving early Sunday morning and returning to a return flight late Wednesday.

Well I did not really sleep Sat night into Sunday morning, just layed on the sofa and dozed a bit.

We set off from our flat to pick up Mum and Dad at about 2am. The drive down to Stansted was really rubbish, snow all the way no let up with it at all.

We got to STN in plenty of time and got from the mid stay car park to the terminal with no problem. there was a big queue for bag drop off but when it opened it soon went down.

Flight was standard Ryanair thing, was on time, we managed to sit together which was nice. Landing was a bit bouncy at Krakow but other than that it was all good. The airport is small so it only takes about 10 mins to get through passport control and grab your bags.

We got some train tickets from an automatic machine and headed off to the little terminal where a shuttle train goes from Krakow centre to the airport.

We stayed in the same B&B as last time as it was a great location. We had a smaller room but it was always lovely and warm, had a very nice bathroom with a great shower.

As we had arrived early we dropped our bags off at out B&B and headed off for some food.
My dad wanted to try out a milk bar, this is sort of a low cost government subsidised cafe which were around everywhere during communist times. Now they are a bit more upmarket. As we soon found out the food was amazing!

3 of us had Zurek which is a type of sour soup with sausage and hard boiled egg in it. Its lovely, really nice and tasty and fills you up.
My mum ordered Bigos which is a hunters stew, mainly made from cabbage with sausage in it.
It was really really nice, not sure I could eat a whole bowl of it but its lovely. We also each had a drink and this came to about 50zl which is just over £10!

This is what the milk bar looks like on the inside

A nice stained glass roof.

After our lunch we headed to the square to have a look about. My Mum and Dad had not visited Krakow since 1980 when it was still all under communist rule. Not a lot has changed building wise but there is just a lot more happening and a lot more people about and it has a much nicer atmosphere.

We went for a ride in one of the horse carriages for 100zl (£20 for all 4 of us) the ride took us down to Wawel castle and it took us about 20-30 mins. Not too bad really.

After our ride we went into the cloth hall. This is a big indoor market, one of the largest in Europe.
Lots of stalls selling all sort of stuff. A lot of amber jewellery and wooden carved objects.
We had a good look in there and a look around the square.
Krakow square is very large so its not just a quick 2 min walk around it.

By this time we were a bit cold so headed to Wedels chocolate shop for something warm.
They do the most amazing hot chocolate in there. There is nothing in the UK that can come close, this is like drinking melted chocolate it is truly amazing!

Hot chocolate with Raspberry sauce at the bottom!

The cafe part of the shop

It was now time to check in so my mum and dad headed off to their hotel and we went to our B&B to check in and get sorted.

We stayed in a place called Tango house and it is about a 30 second walk from the main square.
There was a nice girl that checked us in, she was new there and all a bit flustered, but in a sweet way.
This was almost opposite our B&B

There was a lot more graffiti about compared to our last visit just before Euro 2012, but things like this I don't really class as graffiti, its just great I love it!

Our little room.

Carla had a shower and I fell asleep on the bed while relaxing.

A short time later my phone rang and it was my cousin that lives in Warsaw, he was in Krakow as another birthday surprise!

He came up to our room and we chatted while we waited for Carla to get ready.

We went off to have a look about and find somewhere to eat. After a good walk down to Wawel castle and back we found a nice looking restaurant in one of the corners of the old square.
It was an Italian and Polish restaurant.

I was not too sure about it as when we went in and sat down there was only one other table with people at it. Normally a bad sign with a restaurant.
Myself and my cousin Bartek ordered Pierogi. I went for Peasant ones which are cabbage with mushrooms. Bartek went for Russian style ones with potato and cheese.
Carla ordered a chicken pasta dish with spinach and a cream sauce.

All the food arrived quickly and it was brilliant, really tasty and perfectly cooked. I tried Carlas dish and it was perfectly cooked. Nice bite to the pasta, the sauce was amazing.

I had a bit of cheesecake for afters which was nice. A bit different to our but still very nice.

We had a quick drink in the bar at Hard Rock cafe before heading back to the B&B and bed as it had been a very long day

To be continued....

Monday 11th, my birthday. Bah 30 already!

We got up and had breakfast. Lovely European style breakfast, bread, cold meats and cheese. There was also fruit and yoghurt. A toaster to do your own toast, a kettle for tea and a coffee maker. I do love the breakfasts when we have them. The Polish always have really nice bread and the cold meats are always so nice.
On a side note some Polish sausage you should look out for and try (they sell it in Morrisons and probably Asda) is Krakowska. A really nice sausage which goes well in sandwiches, on pizza or in omelettes. It is best in Polish bread if not that brown bread.

We met up with Bartek and my mum and dad and headed to get the tram to go to the Oscar Schindler factory museum.
It only took about 5 mins on the tram then about a 10 min walk to get there.
On that day it was free entry, there were a few tour groups there but they soon were clear.

The museum is not really have Schindler its more about life during the war for the Jewish community and what the working conditions were like at the factory compared to other places in Krakow at the time. Schindler looked after his workers and there was a lot of effort to keep them and also to fiddle the books so that food could be bought to feed the workers properly during lunch. I saw later in the museum that in the ghettos the Nazis allowed people to have between 200 to 300 calories a day!

We watched a film which was interviewing former workers of the enamel factory. It was good to see former workers talking about their time and their experiences during the war.

Worth a read:

A few images from the museum.

A barbed wire gate from Płaszów, the nearby concentration camp electrified as well.

We picked up a couple of things from the gift shop and headed back to the centre. We just had a bread roll/ large bagel for lunch because we were going for a nice evening meal for my birthday :D

My mum and dad headed off to do some shopping and look at some of the roads off the main square. We headed to the galleria which is a large shopping mall. We had a good look around and stopped for a cup of tea in the afternoon.

a map of the centre in the galleria.

Before going out for a meal for my birthday we went back to the B&B to get ready.

We went to a place called Piano rouge. The food is lovely, the interior is very nicely decorated and at 9pm there was a guy playing the keyboard and a woman singing. It was a rather enjoyable evening.

Some nice fibre optics

That was the end of that day.
All in all it was a good day and a lovely evening. All the food and drink was excellent.
I also got some nice shots of the centre at night with a bit of mist about.

Glad you had a good time mate. But if you think 30 is bad, good luck when you hit 31 ;)

Tuesday 12th.

We got up normal sort of time and after breakfast headed to the Krakow air museum. Again by some luck the day we visited it was free!

It was about a 5- 10 min ride on the tram then a 5 min walk to get there.

It was a good museum, some nice planes. Good interactive stuff and some surprising stuff as well.

There was a hanger with all WW1 planes, mainly German planes but also they had a very well restored Sopwith Camel.

I think the Germans just nicked a boat and strapped a big engine to the front.

There was also a lot of Russian aircraft there. Most of them were outside and in various states of disrepair.

Mig alley

Anyone care to guess what film this was in?

There was also so American planes that were taken after the Korean and Vietnam wars. The Americans must have left in a hurry to leave some of their planes behind.

Check out this jet powered cessna....

We left just after lunch time to get the tram back and headed to the milk bar for lunch. I had Pierogi and they were awesome! Love them!

After lunch Carla and I did some shopping. I bought a Krakow hoodie and a few little bits. Some sweets and stuff like that.

My mum and dad went to a museum that was under the cloth hall. Its all to do with the history of Krakow and how it used to look. We visited it last time in May and its a good museum.

In the evening we went to a restaurant called Chopin. It was really nice inside. The food was amazingly good. You could watch the chef cooking.

Again not really expensive for 4 of us but it was so good!

Once back at the B&B we had to start doing some packing :( BoOOOOOooooOOOOooo

I love Krakow. Been there 3 times now and going back in June this year. Such a lovely city and very cheap too.

Auchwitz was an experience that everyone should do, and the Salt Mines on the outskirts of Krakow were stunning. Anyone who hasnt been its well worth a visit.

We did the mines and Auschwitz last May when we first visited.

We are planning on going again, hopefully in the spring again but we have also talked about visiting the christmas market. That looks rather nice and also looks like there would be some really different stuff to buy.

I went there in December for the Christmas markets - was really nice, lots of snow, the market was lovely. Be warned though its uber cold, one day there it went down to -15 and was so cold that our flight couldnt land due to freezing fog so got an extra day out there.

I usually stay in either the IBIS Centrum or the Novotel Centrum (both attached to each other). The Novotel is the better one as it has a bath in the rooms and a nice swimming pool/jacuzzi. Was so nice getting back after a day walking around in the cold and warming up the bones!!

I would love to see any pics if you have some of the Christmas market.

I went to Toronto one year and that was-15c temps and yes that is amazingly cold. I have never had such painful ears before!

It might take a bit of convincing to get Carla to go if its that cold :p

Lol I also went to Toronto in December a few years ago and I agree, it was stupidly cold. Remember going to Niagara falls and all the water mist on the railings had frozen! Loved Toronto though, fantastic city.

Send me a PM with your email addy on it and i'll send you some photos of Krakow Christmas markets etc.

Berlin is a fantastic city to visit for Christmas markets by the way (we go to a different one every year lol).

So far we have done Krakow, Basel, Edinburgh, Toronto and Berlin!
