I love Sub-Terra (apart from shouting staff 'acting'), although it's not something you want to ride again. I can't even say it's because of the surprise factor because I love going on Hex over and over again.

I could see it opening around Scarefest maybe (assuming it's all OK to open).

If they ever do remove it, I think it will be because of other reasons... it requires a lot of staff for such a small attraction and it gets hardly enough guests on it. It was good as a new ride although for the cost of it they could have built something a bit better. I'm sure the cost of operating it is hardly worth it these days when it's just a small filler attraction with very few guests going through it.

I don't think it will open again this season. It was originally down for technical reasons which towers stated, then towers said it was on going maintenance and now they are saying it's closed until further notice.

I'm now pretty certain it's just closed for cost reasons and what ever was wrong with it has been fixed, or its too much to fix it so they are just leaving it.

I just wish they would put a sign on the entrance of the ride saying it's closed for the day, and also on the website!

Really hope it's open for scarefest as I think the GP actually enjoy it much more than we do (taking member of the GP with me which should be fun)

Won't be that disappointed if it's not though, after all, there's over 50 other attractions to experience ;)

If you look over there and are really quiet you can see one of the rare GP

Could they be changing to do a double drop, fast up and down the way the one in the Dungeons now works?

Why do I hear so many people dislike this? The staff in Phalanx costume are supposed to be 'military like', yet when riding it, there seems to be a lot of laughs and giggles at the staff behaviour.

I think there is a limit. When they are shouting and making light insults at people (just things like splitting up couples and telling people to stop talking) I think it adds to the experience, but when they spit on your face and just shout without making any jokes (im sorry, but just saying "ceebebees land is that way for anyone who feels scared now") it isn't pleasant or fun

The dungeons is a great example of how it should be done. Acting serious and adding to the intimidation of the ride, yet making people laugh and adding to the story and the ride.

To be fair, Black Hole only sat there for 12 months, the building for seven years or whatever it was.

I'd also suggest the sentimental attachment to this ill thought out ride is nowhere near on the level as Black Hole. Black Hole was perhaps only second to Corkscrew in terms of how it helped shaped the park during the 80s and its long tenure has ensured its been well remembered by numerous generations.

Would you rather have Sub-Terra, or the upselling Lava rock climbing wall thing?
    Exactly!
Save your moaning for something worthwhile.....like the Air tunnel or Charlie.

That was such a good ride. But I think I am one of the very few who love sub-terra.

I admire them for trying something different, I'm just not sure it worked out so well. In terms of providing an experience where the rider drops - they did that brilliantly with TH13TEEN a few years previous. I don't even think Sub Terra is a 'bad' ride, I just think it has the lowest "Wow, we have to do that again!" factor of any ride I've ever ridden and the queues when it is open, suggest that may be the consensus among park-goers.

Extremis is a great ending to the Dungeon attraction, but it doesn’t feel as if it works as a standalone thing. Perhaps that’s all in the scale, Mystery Castle almost certainly doesn’t suffer from any of the short-comings (or short-drops) of Sub Terra.

Now I think I see where the issue might be. I would only ride NST, Duel, Hex, Barrells, Log Flume and Rapids, all once if I was a normal member of the public on a day trip to AT, and then get on the bigger coasters and the RMT as much as I could.
I think NST does a great job as a filler, but nothing more. Its a cheap quick thrill that fits into the theme of the FV better than Air does in my opinion

Sub-Terra is more than a decent ride but it ultamitely goes down as a massive flop. It's been closed for the majority of this season and whenever it is open it just does not get a queue. I cannot remember the last time I rode it and went through the main queue rather than the fastrack queue.

It is a shame as it's a good concept and enjoyable ride. It would not surprise me if its extended closure was related to costs in some way.

    :)

I quite enjoy Sub-Terra because the staff are part of the theming, not just ride operators. We go on about Alton losing 'the Magic', but I felt a tingle of it on Sub-Terra. Who'd have thought it, a theme park indulging in a little theme.

I've found it varies. Some rides it's all a laugh and the staff say things anyone could laugh along with. Although other times I've found certain staff go a bit over the top, and start insulting some guests constantly, even when some guests don't look impressed with it.

I just find it strange when it's meant to be a military facility that's welcoming the public to view a discovery. If we were becoming recruits then the shouting makes sense, but as a guest/visitor to a military site the shouting doesn't make any sense at all.

Never thought about it that way before....

I think we are just supposed to go with the gist.... Military people are arses!

I think that's partly the problem - the story's a bit cobbled together and the actors are probably simply briefed that they're supposed to be generic military types without putting much thought into the actual storyline of the ride. With a bit of focus on the scripting and getting it all running smoothly it could be a really good attraction, but otherwise it falls a bit short imo.
