Ride Access Pass Systems and Disabled Access (pre 2024)

Shoved to one side, or unavoidably disadvantaged by circumstances beyond the control of anyone?

Really, what could they possibly do?

The alternative seems to be RAP users can't ride, so noone can. Just shut it for all, it's fair then isn't it? Silly.
Again, there are options available which whilst they might slow down capacity even more it's the right thing to do.
You don't get to say your company is accessible then take the easy way out of accessibility.

And in some cases yes closing inaccessible facilities till they can figure out accessibility is the right thing to do.

Edit: and before someone says again about rap users on this forum- just because it's not a ride we would be interested in doesn't mean we dont see it as something to fight for.

Short term just like the saw lift being broken?

This is why it matters. It's erosion of access for disabled people. My local library has a lift which has been "temporarily closed" for months now. The council just haven't got round to fixing it. If the access was put in place, it should be maintained.

This issue is reminding me of the case where a disabled person was refused assistance to board a train because the guard couldn't socially distance (I think it was Amy Kavanagh). This is where strict enforcement of the 2m rule does more harm than good

Exactly, and every little erosion makes it easier to justify the next.

You either don't know or don't understand the law relating to this. Adjustments have to be reasonable. That doesn't involve destroying the product for all, and certainly doesn't mean noone can have what only everyone can have. That train of thought is utter madness.

I'm not even really talking about the law but what's right.
It wouldn't be so bad (but still pretty bad) if merlin didn't constantly claim be be accessibility focused which there are so clearly not.
Seeing as there are ways they can do it (such as using photos as a holding pen if needs be) I don't see how it's not a reasonable adjustment.

I think I have a reasonable grasp of the law, I've had to quote it numerous times to management.

So if these rides appear next season available for rap users who will be first to accept it was just part of the solution till the end of the season?.

I certainly won't be, it shows the typical merlin approach or do the easy thing not the right thing.

I think the main point here is that this "solution" is not okay. It sounds like the park could do more to allow RAP to be used on those rides, though I can't say for sure personally as I haven't been to Chessington.

So basically merlin should make normal queues longer and make everyone else wait while a rap can access a certain ride?. Speaking as someone who’s entitled to a rap that don’t seem completely fair to me personally.
Yes that's exactly what I'm saying.

By that logic disabled people shouldn't go on any ride.

I don't believe RAP makes the normal queue longer because the disabled person has to wait before riding again.

i Was talking of the 4 rides in question. If a ride platform has to be cleared then a ride assistant has to go to get the rap holder and then get into said ride think how long that takes. If the system in place can do it quickly like most rides open then that’s fine but when you hold up a ride that’s possibly going to be limited capacity that’s what holds up a queue. Most rides will be able to do this without any disruption.

Aside from legal obligations, there is no moral obligation to close rides that are not accessible to all. Think about what you are saying, no rides are accessible to those with multi limb loss. So there should be no rides at all? It's just stupid.

While reasonable will never be able to be definitively definable in law, there has not been a single suggestion here which could ever considered reasonable. Your expectations are absolutely unreasonable.

I've got no comment on how accessible Merlin is in general, I wouldn't be surprised if it's not great because frankly they are not great at anything, but to make such unreasonable demands about something largely outside of their control will devalue your point about any wider issue.

Right but a minor delay to ride operations isn't unreasonable that's what I'm getting at.

Thinking about it my answer to the question of is Merlin's actions unreasonable might be different if they made those rides mobility access only not just general rap.

Minor? You are kidding, right?

It's not a short walk from ride exit to queue exit, it's not that short to the photo point. The ride dispatches in seconds, the delay you are proposing would be in minutes. Minutes between each dispatch of a maximum 4 person car, and because of the extreme over use of RAP that flow is constant.

It would destroy their ability to run the ride with any reasonable throughput. What you are asking for would be unreasonable.

Again there's ways to even that out so it's got less of an operational impact (not that I think that it's as major as you and a few others are claiming), I think at this time booking slots would be considered reasonable even if there weren't enough slots for all rap users, wouldn't you agree?

Booking slots to do what? To stop the queue for minutes at a time? Every few dispatches to account for the volume of RAP users there are?

Basically, no.

I'm advocating against myself here, as a solo autistic IL be forced to main queue so increasing that has a direct negative impact on me.

Having said that I stand by my point, I genuinely think there are numerous ways merlin could manage things from making it mobility only to limited time slots (possibly + wheelchair only)

They've not thought of any, and nore has anyone here, so I'll stick with no they can't.
