Six Flags: General Discussion

Sorry if there's a separate thread for Six Flags' Chinese exploits, but I decided that here would be an appropriate place to put this. Anyway, according to Screamscape, some additional info has surfaced regarding Six Flags' upcoming park in Nanjing. Or should I say parks, as here's what Screamscape has said:

Six Flags - (5/30/18) According to BlooLoop, Six Flags has announced that a 4th park will be part of the Nanjing complex to be called Six Flags Kids World. The Kids World section will open in the first phase of the project, expected to open in 2021 and is expected to feature attractions developed for "younger thrill-seekers" along with scaled down versions of some of the chain's bigger rides. There will also be some education based entertainment involving math and science as well as physical fitness.
The other three Six Flags parks in Nanjing will be a regular Six Flags theme park, a Six Flags branded waterpark and something new called "Six Flags Adventure Park". As previously mentioned, this new concept will feature attractions like rock climbing and ziplines along with whitewater rafting and motocross bike races.

Well, 4 parks should certainly be interesting, and I'm especially intrigued by Six Flags Kids World and Six Flags Adventure Park. Six Flags Kids World sort of sounds like Six Flags' take on Legoland or Sesame Place; without those respective IPs, of course, and "scaled down versions of bigger rides" sounds interesting. I'd presume they mean things like a kiddie coaster, for example, but maybe there could be some more unique children's rides, like a children's Star Flyer or a children's super loop (I suppose that sounds unlikely). That also begs the question of whether there will be any kiddie rides within the main Six Flags park if this park exists. I'd imagine that Six Flags Adventure World will be sort of like an upsized version of Go Ape, but it could also be similar to Challenge Park that used to be at Cedar Point. Overall, this development sounds more like a mini resort than just your regular Six Flags theme park + water park combo.

Very exciting times are ahead for Six Flags!

Hi guys. Sorry for double posting, but I decided to summarise Six Flags' additions for next year into one place. To start, here's the video:

Now, if you don't want to watch the video, I'll just quickly summarise what each park is getting:
  • Six Flags Magic Mountain - West Coast Racers, a Premier Rides launched möbius coaster sponsored by West Coast Customs. Will reach speeds of 55mph and will contain 4 inversions.
  • Six Flags Great Adventure - Wonder Woman: Lasso of Truth, a Zamperla Giant Discovery like Crazanity at SFMM. Will be 17 stories tall and will reach speeds of 75mph.
  • Six Flags Great America - Maxx Force, an S&S compressed air launch coaster that will reach speeds of 78mph and will contain the world's tallest double inversion as well as America's fastest air launch.
  • Six Flags Discovery Kingdom - Batman: The Ride, an S&S 4D Free Spin.
  • Darien Lake - Rebrand to Six Flags Darien Lake and the installation of SkyScreamer, a 24 story tall Funtime Star Flyer.
  • Six Flags America - Firebird, a floorless conversion of the park's B&M stand up coaster Apocalypse.
  • Six Flags Fiesta Texas - The Joker Wild Card, a Zamperla Giant Discovery like Crazanity at SFMM. Will be 17 stories tall and will reach speeds of 75mph. Park will also be open year-round.
  • Six Flags Mexico - Two new kids areas in the form of DC Super Friends and Bugs Bunny Boomtown, with a total of 13 rides. Unsure whether a new kiddie cred will be included amongst these or not.
  • Six Flags Hurricane Harbour Oaxtepec - King Cobra, a slide featuring a huge cobra centrepiece.
  • Six Flags Over Texas - Lone Star Revolution, the world's tallest Larson Super Loop. I'd presume it'll be the same as Mardi Gras Hangover at SFGAm.
  • Six Flags New England - Cyborg, some kind of spinning flat ride. Looks similar to Pandemonium that Great Escape received last year.
  • Great Escape - Bucket Blasters, a new Twist'n'Splash-style ride. I'd presume it'll be a Mack, but I'm not too sure, as I think Zamperla does a model too.
  • Frontier City - Timber Town, a new kids area featuring 3 new rides. Unsure whether a kiddie cred is one of these.
  • Six Flags Over Georgia - Pandemonium, a Zamperla Giant Discovery, but this looks to be smaller than the others. Will be 15 stories tall and will reach 70mph.
  • La Ronde - Chaos, a Larson Super Loop. Seems like it'll be the standard 7 story tall model.
  • Six Flags St Louis - Supergirl Sky Flight, some sort of new-gen Enterprise.

I think that's all! Please tell me if I got anything wrong or if I missed anything, and I'll edit the post. Looks like a reasonably good year for Six Flags in my eyes; quite a few Zamperla frisbees!​
 
I do love Six Flags annoucements videos and this years was an amusing one, good old Jim Reid-Anderson!

I also find it amusing that they market the Giant Discoveries at Great Adventure and Fiesta Texas as the worlds largest, despite them being seemingly the same size as the one that opened at Magic Mountain last year. I know their statement is true, but still!

A decent year of additions for Six Flags I suppose, at least there are a couple of unique (for now) coasters.

So it looks like Six Flags are looking in to the possibility of adding hotels to some of their theme parks. Hotels have been the subject of recent guest feedback surveys and the parks they seem to be considering for hotels are Over Texas, Over Georgia, America, Great Adventure and Magic Mountain.

Not sure I can warm to the idea of a Six Flags hotel at all.
 
Depends how they do them. Even a cheap and cheerful motel with park entry would be a plus point for some of these... Plus looking at the chosen parks they're being relatively sensible with who gets one (for now)...

Not sure if they'd be forced to be more expensive for competitive sake against the locals... The price will make or break these...
 
If they follow the same model as the parks, you'll be able to get a room for the whole season at a great price but then be charged about $50 for breakfast and $100 for a poor quality evening meal...!
 
Surprised they've taken this long tbh, especially for the busier parks. It doesn't have to be anything major, just basic rooms within walking distance of the front gate.

Towering an incredible 86 feet in height, this innovative water coaster will be the tallest-of-its-kind in the world. Riders will reach a top speed of 28 mph over 950 feet of enclosed tunnels and open-air slides with three gravity-defying blasts and five breathtaking drops. Tsunami Surge will also feature AquaLucent technology, giving riders the sensation of traveling at the speed of light as brilliant colors and dreamlike imagery heighten the ride experience.

• Six Flags Mexico, the undisputed Thrill Capital of Latin America, announced its most exciting ride to date—CraZanity—the world’s tallest pendulum ride. With a record height more than 50 meters, this enormous, giant disk will reach speeds over 120 kilometers per hour as it whips back and forth, and higher and higher, to give riders an amazing view of the world all around them.

• Six Flags Darien Lake, the Thrill Capital of New York State, is excited to announce that its waterpark will become Six Flags Hurricane Harbor and welcome a massive new slide. Wahoo Wave and its one-of-a-kind water wall will elevate the park’s already powerful roster of heat-beating attractions. This adrenaline-packed adventure sends four riders into near vertical surges to experience extended hang times and zero g-forces. Riders plunge 30 feet straight down before sweeping up at high speeds as they arc across the top of a massive water wall, virtually defying gravity before descending into a refreshing pool below.

• Six Flags Over Texas, the Thrill Capital of Texas, will debut Aquaman: Power Wave, the first-of-its-kind water coaster in North America. Standing an impressive 148 feet tall, this massive attraction launches riders backward across more than 700 feet of track at 63 mph. As the ride completes its action-packed cycle, riders are launched forward from a 90-degree angle for the ultimate splashdown. Aquaman: Power Wave will be the park’s 15th coaster.

• Six Flags Great Escape Resort, New York’s Most Thrilling Resort Property, announces the Adirondack Outlaw. This high-flying ride will have guests catching maximum airtime and experiencing 360-degree rotations of heart-pounding excitement. The head-over-heels exhilaration of Adirondack Outlaw will elevate riders to unmatched heights as they travel more than 50 mph. This rebellious ride swings 16 stories high, offering spectacular views of Lake George.

• La Ronde, Quebec’s leading destination for thrills and family entertainment, will introduce the first ever free-fly coaster in Canada. Vipère takes coaster riding to the next level, sending riders on a head over heels journey with unexpected drops, vertical free-falls and gravity-defying somersaults. This thrilling ride will give guests the feeling of weightlessness as they soar outside the confines of a traditional track.

• Six Flags New England, the Thrill Capital of New England, will introduce its latest thrill in 2020. Guests will take an adrenaline-charged flight on the all-new Supergirl Sky Flyer attraction as they soar nearly seven stories through the sky in open-air vehicles. Drawing on DC Super Hero Supergirl’s powers of stamina and strength, thrill-seekers spin and tilt at maximum speeds while suspended from the massive whirling wheel. • Magic Waters will become Hurricane Harbor Rockford when it opens next summer. The park is also adding to its thrilling attraction lineup with the only tailspin waterslide in the Midwest—Tidal Wave. This uniquely designed waterslide will send riders through a limitless wave as they descend from 43 feet above the ground, reaching speeds of 15 mph through twists and turns. The thrill slide will feature new AquaLucent technology, adding another level of excitement as the dark twists and turns light up in dazzling, fullcolor patterns.

• Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Phoenix, the Largest Waterpark in Arizona, is offering guests a bigger, better and wetter experience with its largest expansion in years. The exciting, new Paradise Island will feature a 12,000 square foot activity pool. Guests will keep cool and enjoy plenty of fun in the sun with a new water volleyball area and a unique water basketball court. The addition will also include more shade, lounge seating, restrooms and new culinary options.

• Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Arlington, the Largest Waterpark in North Texas, will open an all-new slide complex called, Banzai Pipeline. Guests will have the choice of three slides with multiple twists, turns and drops down a four-story tower for a thrilling and refreshing ride

• Six Flags White Water Atlanta, the Southeast’s Largest Waterpark, will debut Python Plunge, a striking five-story water slide with multiple swirling discs and adrenalinepumping drops. The massive water slide features two-person rafts that slither along a 500-foot course and careen around giant saucer-shaped turns before sending guests plunging into the pool below.

• White Water Bay will become Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Oklahoma City when the park opens next spring for the 2020 season. The Largest Waterpark in Oklahoma is also debuting an exhilarating, new high-speed racing complex—Wahoo Racer—a multi-lane water complex that gives riders two uniquely different experiences. The park will also receive numerous upgrades and bright, tropical theming throughout.

• Six Flags Fiesta Texas, the Thrill Capital of South Texas, will debut Daredevil Dive Flying Machines, the world’s tallest ride-of-its-kind. Experience the thrills and sensations of weightlessness through aerial banks, loops and dives, all while seated in a retro, fourseater steampunk flying machine. Sharply turning right side up and upside down, riders will break from formation and maneuver into aerobatic dogfights during the barnstorming journey, all while soaring nearly five stories above Crackaxle Canyon.

• Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, the Thrill Capital of Northern California, is adding its 12th roller coaster, Sidewinder Safari. This unique, combination family coaster and animal exhibit immerses guests in a jungle-like setting as they enter the queue line surrounded by live snakes, lizards and other reptiles. Guests will then travel along 1,378 feet of slithering track with twisting and turning hairpin curves, rapid strike drops and 360- degree spins.

• Six Flags St. Louis, the Coaster Capital of Missouri, is unleashing Catwoman Whip to catapult guests into thrilling chaos. The adventure begins as the ride’s giant arm launches 16 guests, with feet dangling, 164 feet into the air. As the massive arm whips around at up to 52 mph in a spinning rotation, the unique open-air pods are simultaneously flipping guests head over heels. From 16 stories high, guests will plummet back down toward the ground only to complete the rotation all over again for an intense adrenaline rush.

• Six Flags America, DC’s Thrill Capital, will open its newest attraction, Harley Quinn Spinsanity. The oversized giant pendulum ride, named after DC super villain HARLEY QUINN, promises to deliver epic, high-flying excitement as it spins and swings to breathtaking heights. The towering, swinging, giant disc will reach speeds up to 70 mph as it whips back and forth, going higher and higher while constantly spinning, giving riders an exhilarating riding experience.

• Six Flags Magic Mountain, the undisputed “Thrill Capital of the World,” will have the biggest-ever expansion of the park’s two signature annual events, Fright Fest in the fall and Holiday in the Park during the winter season. The expanded event offerings will be located in the newly renovated area of the park, The Underground, where the new coaster, West Coast Racers, will soon open. Both events will have an urban “street vibe” and feature exciting and uniquely themed activities and entertainment, adding an entirely different dimension to each of the park’s most popular events.

• This fall, Six Flags delivers the biggest and scariest Halloween event on the planet— Fright Fest®. Great Adventure is obiously the highlight, and the Mack PowerSplash will be a good addition for Over Texas. Interesting to see that Green Lantern from Magic Mountain is not being scrapped but moved to La Ronde; let's see if they are able to keep it open more successfully that Magic Mountain in recent times!
 
Essentially sixflags magic mountain aren’t getting anything for 2020 as most years they add new stuff/change things at their seasonal events, so are just listing this as way to make look like something new is happening. Originally was a strong rumour they would get a huge sky flyer attraction but due to delays on west coast racers was cancelled.

I was expecting quite a small addition based on their teasers and the fact that they built coasters in 2019 and 2018, but they're building a coaster for the 3rd year in a row! Admittedly, it isn't a huge coaster, but it's a coaster nonetheless! I've done a bit of digging based on what Six Flags has given us, and it looks to be a Zamperla Twister Coaster 420STD. Interesting choice given that the last and only time Six Flags bought this model was Ragin' Cajun for Six Flags Great America in 2004!

I wouldn’t say it’s looks any better than any other year as is the usual mix of fairly cheap additions, by all accounts sixflags are starting to struggle and much like merlin, parks are struggling to operate with the budgets they are given. Apparantly Magic Mountain have recently had their operating budget reduced by 10% for the rest of 2019.

But on the other hand, I'd also say that 2020 looks to be far from Six Flags' weakest year additions-wise; for example, I'd certainly say that 2017, when the only roller coasters were S&S Free Spins, was a weaker year than 2020 looks set to be. In fact, I'd actually say that 2020 looks to be one of Six Flags' strongest years in recent times! SFGAdv's RMC Raptor looks to be pretty substantial and can't have come cheap; same with SFOT's Mack PowerSplash, although there are rumours that that came from the cancelled Dubai park. There are also plenty of other substantial additions across the chain.
 
His accent is utterly fascinating.

Some of those additions aren't huge by any means but it's pretty cool how they present them in that way.

Discovery Kingdom has done pretty well in the new coaster stakes of late, whereas other parks have certainly not.

I say these aren't overly bad overall. The raptor at Great Adventure looks to be really good and it's nice to see Six Flags go for a Mack. Aside from that, not really bothered...

Well he was actually born in Iraq, grew up in several countries before being educated in Britain (he has a degree from the University of Birmingham) and his career took him over to the US!

Looks like he is set to retire in 2020, so this may be the last of his wacky videos which is a shame.

I'd imagine the wacky videos will be taken over by Jim's successor; John Duffey did one during his brief tenure as Six Flags' CEO!
