My first concern is that they seem to claim to be some great force for good in the world and yet are willing to ignore severe human rights abuses of both competitor and hosting states. It's also notable that they participate in huge sponsorship deals from inappropriate business partners for a sporting event. I think they ought to drop their false message of ethics as they obviously don't really value it.
Secondly, I don't think it's appropriate for us to spend quite so much public money on facilities that have a such limited future and use or fund large scale one-time events such as the opening ceremony while there are increasing numbers of people in this country relying on the aid of charity to feed themselves and their families.
It does sort of rub wasteful expenditure in the face of normal people struggling to pay bills and get by.
As for whether I personally enjoy the games or not, I've never really been into sports and it's just not my cup of tea. Despite that, the Olympics has been and will be very good for the arts and it would be a lie to say that I'm not thrilled by the idea of increased focus on artistic outputs - even if I do feel the increased funding is morally suspect in today's economic climate.

But in all seriousness, as a Socialist I'm not against the Government investing public money as that makes jobs and growth, but the spending on these spectacles of the Olympics, Jubilee and New Year's celebrations are all things which do not make any great financial return for the country and do not directly improve the lives of the general public (beyond the provision of entertainment).
When the economic cards are down, I would say every penny needs to be invested in a way which benefits the most vulnerable or increases growth and unfortunately the Olympics does not fall under either of those categories.

Anyone else as disgusted as this as me?
Whereabouts is this? Admittedly I haven't looked very hard, but it doesn't appear to be mentioned on the BBC News pages...Blaze said:Apparently they've uncovered a plot to fly a plan into the stadium or whatever. Funny how this comes out after the uproar about the missiles on rooftops.
