I basically bring back the old topic, Olympic fever is in full swing now for the third time in London. Somehow we've got it? Do you care? Will you be watching it? Are we fit enough to be hosting it? Who will win a said event? It'll all be discussed here.

Re: The London 2012 Olympics Discussion

Where's the option that says 'I'm not that bothered that we're hosting it but I'll still watch it' ? ;)

Re: The London 2012 Olympics Discussion

We're going to royally cock it up.

That pretty much concludes my thoughts and feelings, otherwise I couldn't really care much either way.

Re: The London 2012 Olympics Discussion

I feel proud that London is having the Olympics, but the Marketing has been awful! The logo and mascots look crap, Colours used on promotional items are awful, and the Opening Ceremony looks embrassing!. Whoever was in charge of the marketing should be shot. However, I'm looking forward to the actual events, if we preform like we did in Beijing, Then it should be a good one. :)

Father John I have removed your post - the final content didn't really merit an edit.

Watch yer language will yeh Father?!

Re: The London 2012 Olympics Discussion

I saw the torch today. ;D

Looking forward to the Olympics, second best sporting event this year. ;)

Re: The London 2012 Olympics Discussion

I'm massively excited for the Olympics and think we're going to do an outstanding job of it.
The British press has been trying to stomp on the Olympics since the day we knew we'd be hosting. They've slated everything. Unfortunately for them...everything's done on time, under the post-bid-win estimate budget and really quite well. Sure the logo split opinion, but it's certainly a logo you'll never forget. It's versatile and futuristic and in that sense, it succeeds regardless of wether or not you like it.
The attitude the British public so love to take is "we're going to be an embarrassment" as it fits in with the "we're the worst country in the world. We have no talent. Pity us" attitude which people seem to love to revel in these days. The truth is that people at the top of their field across many fields and who represent us on the world stage are involved in putting this together. Having been following the dribs and drabs of information regarding the Opening Ceremony very closely, I can promise you right now that it isn't going to disappoint, from what I gather, it's going to be every bit as spectacular as what you saw in Beijing, and it will certainly have a bit more heart.
Also, we've succeeded in planning a games that will actually change our city once the games are done. We have uses for our buildings and stadiums (the olympic stadium will find one, eventually ??? ) and where we don't- they're temporary. We have a stunning new park already with thousands of new homes and contracts for thousands more being handed out. We have an Olympic Park which will become a living, functioning part of the city when the games are done, as well as infrastructural upgrades that will make a lasting difference. All this in place of a forgotten, contaminated and run-down section of the city. The gloriously "successful' Beijing games involved demolishing hundreds of people's homes to build an Olympic park that has absolutely no purpose now. Literally acres of concrete almost uninhibited. The Birds Nest Stadium is used just 4 or 5 times a year, and for a winter funfair. That's it. At the Athens Olympic Park, there's padlocks on the gates. Some of the venues, which cost millions, have started falling apart.
The only criticism I have for the Olympics is unrelated to our involvement as hosts. The sponsorship nonsense really does undermine everything the Olympics is supposed to stand for. I guess that's just the nature of financing a multi-billion pound event in a capitalist world, but it's pretty sickening- the level of control and power these laughably unsuitable sponsors are given.
All in all, I've got pretty sick of hearing "it's going to be an embarrassment" tossed around for the last 7 years, and I've been even more frustrated at the press for enforcing that view. If we actually had faith in ourselves, a bit of pride and determination as a nation, we might actually get somewhere. Instead we revel in rubbing everything in the dirt. Thankfully, despite that, those in control have managed to fight through and it's clear the final outcome is one of quality. With the torch travelling around the country, I think the public are finally getting on board. Come July 27th, I think a fair few people may be eating their words.

Re: The London 2012 Olympics Discussion

I'm hoping that the opening ceremony will be impressive - hopefully plenty of spectacular fireworks from Kimbolton again like those on New Years' Eve.

Re: The London 2012 Olympics Discussion

I think I best expressed my views in the original TT thread... (or rather I'm lazy and I'm just going to copy and paste it across :p)

I do have a few issues with the Olympics... (surprise, surprise).

My first concern is that they seem to claim to be some great force for good in the world and yet are willing to ignore severe human rights abuses of both competitor and hosting states. It's also notable that they participate in huge sponsorship deals from inappropriate business partners for a sporting event. I think they ought to drop their false message of ethics as they obviously don't really value it.

Secondly, I don't think it's appropriate for us to spend quite so much public money on facilities that have a such limited future and use or fund large scale one-time events such as the opening ceremony while there are increasing numbers of people in this country relying on the aid of charity to feed themselves and their families.

It does sort of rub wasteful expenditure in the face of normal people struggling to pay bills and get by.

As for whether I personally enjoy the games or not, I've never really been into sports and it's just not my cup of tea. Despite that, the Olympics has been and will be very good for the arts and it would be a lie to say that I'm not thrilled by the idea of increased focus on artistic outputs - even if I do feel the increased funding is morally suspect in today's economic climate.

:p

But in all seriousness, as a Socialist I'm not against the Government investing public money as that makes jobs and growth, but the spending on these spectacles of the Olympics, Jubilee and New Year's celebrations are all things which do not make any great financial return for the country and do not directly improve the lives of the general public (beyond the provision of entertainment).

When the economic cards are down, I would say every penny needs to be invested in a way which benefits the most vulnerable or increases growth and unfortunately the Olympics does not fall under either of those categories.

Re: The London 2012 Olympics Discussion

Although David Beckham isn't a good footballer by fitness standards, he still has the quality still in him. His work for the Olympics and being a torchbearer is now near-null since he isn't representing team GB. Micah Richards will probably be rusty from lack of recent football anyway.

Anyone else as disgusted as this as me?

Re: The London 2012 Olympics Discussion

No, he's old and past it. Well, he was old and past it three years ago. And I'm not even a proper faffball fan!

I look forward to the Olympics because I enjoy watching people put years of training to use, events such as diving, javelin, hammer throw and the steeplechase are just enjoyable to watch for me.

Re: The London 2012 Olympics Discussion

Don't think that it is possible, under the laws of the universe, for me to care less about the Olympics.

Re: The London 2012 Olympics Discussion

Apparently they've uncovered a plot to fly a plan into the stadium or whatever. Funny how this comes out after the uproar about the missiles on rooftops.

Not pointing the finger one way or another, but it's a bit fishy.

Re: The London 2012 Olympics Discussion

I think the controversy around the missiles wasn't about whether they should be available, but more to do with the fact they were being fixed onto an inhabited block of flats!

Re: The London 2012 Olympics Discussion

Sounds like they've made it up to stop people kicking off about the going on roofs so they can justify it.

And you can bet they don't come down after the games.

No, infact I'm glad he was rightfully dropped from the squad. He's had his time and isn't even a good player anymore by English standards, anyone would look good playing in a country where people think the sports called "Soccer".

Whereabouts is this? Admittedly I haven't looked very hard, but it doesn't appear to be mentioned on the BBC News pages...

Just saw the full length advert during the football... Assume the titles are similar (am on mobile so can't check) and if they are then they're fantastic!
