The Musicals/Stage Productions Topic!!!

Currently watching the JCSS OG 1973 film.

..... Safe to say it's a bit different to the modern versions we know and love.

And that's taking the "seventies factor" in to account.

Imma see where this goes. Already seen a song I am not familiar with...

The insanity of Herrod's number is it's own thing to behold...

.... I'm sorry, I'm not sure how that ended. There was star filters, and some jazz...

Took me long enough to work out JCSS.
Herod was a good clue.
Loved the film, we were allowed a half day from school to watch it for RE.
Not quite RHPS, but similar.

It's quite camp in places, isn't it? Particularly when it comes to Herod's Song. Still think the best version of that is the one Rik Mayall did - he was quite clearly hamming it up and having an absolute blast. A close second is the legendary Alice Cooper, who was absolutely brilliant. As for Chris Moyles as Herod? GOOD GOD, WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING?!

I always find it funny that despite King Herod being on for less than 5 minutes in the show that he always steals the show.

Though honestly always felt the early 90s Australian tour version is a personal favourite for JCSS, actually a lot of Australian versions of musicals from Starlight, Phantom and that all seem solid versions IMO.

Now's gonna be a good time to admit I played King Herod in a production of Jesus Christ Superstar back in 2008, wasn't it? Absolutely loved it, and it was a great chance for me to go a bit Large Ham. :p

Would have loved to have done that role had we done a high school play back in the day as in a serious musical you get to act like a loudmouth buffoon for one song then bugger off...easiest role surely for only needing to be on stage for less that 6 minutes haha.

I went to see Moulin Rouge! The Musical at the Piccadilly Theatre yesterday with @Rowe. Whilst the storyline is weak and songs somewhat comical (I mean how many medleys?!), the staging, lighting and automation are utterly spectacular. The stage is fairly small although I’m aware it is quite deep so they can store the trucks upstage when not in use, enabling them to bring in various set pieces and the stage still not look shallow. It is so impressive and I struggle to imagine how everything is stored when flown out, there never seemed to be a scene where a new set piece wasn’t in use!

The auditorium has been fully decked out too, creating a really immersive experience, although a pity that didn’t translate to the front of house corridors and foyers which seem a bit bare in comparison. There were many moments where we turned to each other to comment on something which looked like it had been pulled straight out of the CanCan Coaster queue!

A very fun show overall though and well worth a watch if you can grab a ticket that’s not too expensive.

Thank you for providing the soundtrack for this evening. I love the original film so much that I'm not sure I can quite detach it enough in my mind to enjoy the stage show. it looks like great fun, and your review suggests so too, but the soundtrack is missing (what I feel) are some key moment. Who knows? Maybe in a few years I may be able to enjoy it for what it is.

Glad you enjoyed it! The staging sounds incredibly intriguing.

Saw Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in Liverpool over the weekend. A childhood film favourite in our household and I’d forgotten just how many brilliant songs there are that a perfectly suited to musical theatre. Loved it, highly recommend to anybody that enjoyed the film, or just wants to see a flying car on stage (not quite as impressive if you’ve seen the Delorean in Back to the Future!) but still a great feat.

Nothing particularly profound or thought provoking, just a real fun show for all the family.

Book of Mormon coming back to Liverpool in next year so I'll be going to see that again.
Saw it last week on Bradford for the fifth time. Although went for a cheap £15 seat on the back row of the Upper Circle, which I wouldn’t recommend or repeat.

Stranger Things First Shaddow last night.

Loved it, some of the most spectacular effects I've seen in a stage show with an incredible set and a couple of good bits of jump scare and gore, and a story that slowly reveals itself to neatly fit into Stranger Things as a back story.

Helped that having paid for technically restricted view the edge of row H, the 10 seats next to us remained empty so we slid along into what are the most expensive seats and best in the house. Win!
