TowersStreet Planet Coaster Speed Build Contest 2024/25: Week 13 ends 14th February

@Matt N I'm having severe internet speed restrictions here. The video will upload, I am unsure if it'll be done by midnight. I fear some of the hamsters that provide the power to run the internet have been blown away in the storm.
You've already posted, so that won't be an issue. I can still embed the link within the Round 10 Voting form.

Great round, everybody! Let's now move onto Round 10 voting...
Round 10 Voting
OK, folks. The Round 10 submissions are in, so the voting stage can now begin!

Please vote for your Round 10 favourites via this Google Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1...ZdZ1NR6W_SuK6fESpgm4K17bQ/viewform?usp=dialog

Let me just recap a few things about voting, if you need a reminder:
  • If you're not clear on how I'd like you to vote; please pick your top 5 track layouts and rank them in order of preference from #1 to #5. Therefore, if you give a player a particular ranking, the points allocated are as follows; #1 ranking = 5pts, #2 ranking = 4pts, #3 ranking = 3pts, #4 ranking = 2pts, #5 ranking = 1pt. Note: As we only have 5 submissions this week, please only pick a top 5 if you have not submitted a submission. If you have submitted a submission, please pick a top 4 to prevent voting for yourself.
  • You will also receive the opportunity to nominate a submission for Realism or Originality if you wish. These nominations are not compulsory; you can award them if you wish, but you do not have to nominate anyone for Realism or Originality.
  • Please only fill out this form once. I have not mandated this within the form itself, but I'm trusting you all here.
  • Please do not vote for yourself. I know that there is no way I can mandate this, but I trust you not to. Please can I request that you only nominate submissions that are not your own.
  • Please bear in mind that the numbered ranking categories in the Google Form (#1, #2, #3, #4 and #5) are intended to be mutually exclusive, and if you put a submission in one ranking spot, you should not put it in another. I will reject any ballots cast with one submission nominated for multiple ranking spots (for instance, you cannot nominate a submission as both your #1 and your #2). This does not apply to Most Realistic and Most Original, however; if you are making nominations in these categories, you can nominate the same submission for both, and you can also nominate a submission that you have already put in your 1-5 ranking for one or both of these categories if you wish.
  • Please judge submissions on track layout only. This is a coaster layout building contest; theming is pretty much irrelevant here.
  • I know that this form of voting is more anonymous than some may like. If you would like to add a slightly more personal touch, you can post a comment in this thread indicating your top 5 choices, as well as any Realism or Originality nominations. However, can I please request that the Google Form be your first port of call for voting; I will only count votes cast within the Google Form, as if you post in this thread, I wouldn't like to assume whether you've already voted in the Google Form or not. Post your choices in the thread by all means, but please make sure that you log your votes within the Google Form first, as the votes within the Google Form are the votes I'll be counting.
Here is a reminder of everyone's submissions so that you know what you're voting for:
  • Cyclone of Penitence, a Mack Rides Launch Coaster by @Matt N:
  • Unchartered Accountant, a Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter by @RicketyCricket:
  • Mapped Out, a Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter by @tactic:
  • FEAR, a Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter by @Thameslink Rail:
  • The Soviet Arrow, an Arrow Dynamics suspended coaster by @Poisson:

Voting for Round 10 closes on Friday 31st January 2025 at 11:45pm, and the results will be revealed as part of the Week 12 Weekly Digest.

It's now time to move onto the final bit of the week...
Round 11 Building
Now that Round 10 is over, it's time to reveal the next round of the competition! The brief for Round 11 is... The Smiler Reloaded at Alton Towers! The context for the round is as follows:
When it opened in 2013, The Smiler took the coaster world by storm. With 14 inversions, it blew the inversion record wide open after years of Colossus and its various siblings holding the record, and it was a truly popular ride. But from day 1, it's always been a tad... problematic. From teething problems to the catastrophic crash of 2015 to roughness to dodgy concrete and shifting footers, The Smiler has had a chequered past and is somewhat of a ticking time bomb. As such, Alton Towers have decided to get out ahead of the potential issues and remove the ride, and they want you to devise a replacement! The park still wants that all-important inversion record (we can't have Colossus and Sik reigning supreme, can we?), and it's also important to note both the incredulously tight area that The Smiler currently occupies and Alton Towers' ever-annoying treeline height limit. These challenges will make this an interesting build... will you rise to the challenge?
The constraints for the round are as follows:
  • Maximum Footprint 194ft*381ft/59m*116m
  • Maximum Height 72ft/22m
  • Minimum of 11 Inversions
For some context, the area of Alton Towers we're working with here is as follows:
The Smiler Plot.png
To apply the footprint constraints, I would recommend using the Scenario Editor to make yourself a park template that allows you to enforce the constraints.

However, if you find yourself unable to do this, I have created a Steam Workshop park template with the footprint constraints pre-imposed, which you can download here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3410103549

For console users, I would recommend setting out the footprint constraints using wall pieces or path pieces to build yourself an "area" to work within. Path and wall pieces are typically 4m in length, for reference. I know it's not ideal, but it's unfortunately the best I can recommend given that neither Scenario Editor nor Steam Workshop are available on console... sorry for the inconvenience, folks.

To submit, please build your submission, film a POV and/or off-ride shots of it, and post the video(s) in this thread. You can briefly describe your ride if you wish. YouTube is the website I'd recommend for uploading videos to, as this would integrate best with the Google Form when it comes to voting, but if you want to upload your video(s) using a different method, then that's also fine. If you have any issues with recording or uploading your video(s), please don't hesitate to contact me. I will try my best to assist you.

May I once again emphasise that this is a coaster layout building contest. By all means add some light theming and landscaping if you wish, but the coaster layout should ideally be the focus. Quality of coaster layout is pretty much the be all and end all here; heavy theming won't gain you any points, and no theming won't lose you any points.

The submission deadline for Round 11 is Friday 31st January 2025 at 11:45pm. If you struggle for time and would like me to extend the deadline, please PM me or request an extension in this thread before the deadline. If you do not make contact with me and ask for an extension, I will assume that you simply do not want to compete in this round and move on after the posted deadline.

I think that's all I need to cover for Week 11. Good luck with Round 11, folks! If you have any questions or concerns about the round, please don't hesitate to contact me. I am always more than happy to help.

Get building for Round 11 and voting for Round 10, everybody!

Genuinely laughed out loud when the music kicked in 😂

I wanted to show there would be a bit of a dark ride section there, but had no time to do much. I figured why not make it utterly silly? I had the music from the Mr Blobby retheme of Samurai created for the Hyperia thread a while back.

I think I need help.

I know I haven't been around for weeks. Long story. Had a terrible couple of months. But I thought I'd pop in for a round. Gutted I missed the Hyperia round, I half built something and didn't have time to finish it.

Kylie Manogue's - The Kyler.

The Worlds First Rollercoaster fully dedicated to fusing a pop star and an Australian soap opera in its theme. Hmmm, no that sounds too plausible.

11 inversions? Na na na, na na na na na. You'll be saying "I'm spinning around, move out my way" with 14 here. As Jason Donovan would say, there's too many broken hearts in the world already to not have the full lot.

Will there be a small RAP queue? Will 2 hours standing in a mouldy concrete pit pay off or will it break down 4 times? You should be so lucky, lucky lucky lucky.

Of course, because it's Towers, it has black track, and comes with no supporting flat rides. To make the theme as depressing as possible in true Towers style, there's probably a Neighbours episode where someone went on a murdering spree or something. They could just use that.

Not my finest work, bit rushed I'm afraid.

Awesome submission @Matt.GC! Your inversions are very smooth, and you've got quite a wide variety of them! It's also a long ride too, and it does definitely hark back to the current Smiler for me in some ways.

My Round 11 submission is now here... say hello to Hypnotica, an S&S El Loco:
Hypnotica Overview.png

The ride stats are as follows:
  • Name: Hypnotica
  • Manufacturer: S&S Sansei Technologies
  • Model: El Loco (Custom)
  • Height: 71ft/22m
  • Speed: 47mph/76kph
  • Length: 3,375ft/1,029m
  • Inversions: 12 (game counted 14, but I counted 12)
  • Airtime Moments: 7
  • Maximum Positive G-Force: 6.7G overall/6.6G heatmap
  • Maximum Negative G-Force: -1.4G overall/-1.1G heatmap
  • Trains: 3 trains with 2 cars/8 riders
  • Throughput: 526pph (65-66 trains per hour, 1 train every ~55s)
If you'd like to play around with Hypnotica for yourself, here's the Steam Workshop link you can download it from: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3415834490

So that's Hypnotica, my Round 11 submission! It's not my best submission, but I hope you like it nonetheless!

Kylie is how we fondly refer to Spinball Whizzer, her sister Dannii is, of course, Dragon's Fury.

Round 12 Building
Now that Round 11 is over, it's time to reveal the next round of the competition! The brief for Round 12 is... Excalibur Replacement at Drayton Manor! The context for the round is as follows:
In 2024, Drayton Manor opened its first roller coaster in 13 years in the form of Gold Rush. This Intamin family launch coaster with switch tracks and multi-route features was a really unique ride, and it gave the park the roller coaster bug; they want to install another! They've chosen the prime plot of land formerly occupied by Excalibur to place it upon, and they've commissioned none other than you to design it! As Drayton Manor is a family park, they don't want anything too big, but they would like something with length, which they currently lack. However, Gold Rush was only built last year and Drayton Manor is not exactly made of money, so budgets are tight. It'll be a tough challenge... how will you rise to it?
The constraints for the round are as follows:
  • Maximum Footprint 577ft*279ft/176m*85m
  • Maximum Height 82ft/25m
  • Minimum Length 3,000ft/914m
  • Maximum Budget $12,500
For some context, the area of Drayton Manor we're working with here is as follows:
