TowersStreet Planet Coaster Speed Build Contest 2024/25: Week 3 ends 29th November

Week 2 Weekly Digest (16th-22nd November 2024)
OK folks; that's the end of Week 1! Let's get into Week 2, shall we?

I'll start with Round 1 voting...
Round 1 Voting
OK, folks. The Round 1 submissions are in, so the voting stage can now begin!

Please vote for your Round 1 favourites via this Google Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeLYXPDJtNIdVyWVdvBJW7ZKX_mD6IyNchQx1Klwm2jd18uRg/viewform

Let me just recap a few things about voting, if you need a reminder:
  • If you're not clear on how I'd like you to vote; please pick your top 5 track layouts and rank them in order of preference from #1 to #5. Therefore, if you give a player a particular ranking, the points allocated are as follows; #1 ranking = 5pts, #2 ranking = 4pts, #3 ranking = 3pts, #4 ranking = 2pts, #5 ranking = 1pt.
  • You will also receive the opportunity to nominate a submission for Realism or Originality if you wish. These nominations are not compulsory; you can award them if you wish, but you do not have to nominate anyone for Realism or Originality. As the Bonus Round doubling rule also applies to Realism and Originality points, each Realism or Originality nomination a player gets will grant them 2 Realism points or 2 Originality points.
  • Please only fill out this form once. I have not mandated this within the form itself, but I'm trusting you all here.
  • Please do not vote for yourself. I know that there is no way I can mandate this, but I trust you not to. Please can I request that you only nominate submissions that are not your own.
  • Please bear in mind that the numbered ranking categories in the Google Form (#1, #2, #3, #4 and #5) are intended to be mutually exclusive, and if you put a submission in one ranking spot, you should not put it in another. I will reject any ballots cast with one submission nominated for multiple ranking spots (for instance, you cannot nominate a submission as both your #1 and your #2). This does not apply to Most Realistic and Most Original, however; if you are making nominations in these categories, you can nominate the same submission for both, and you can also nominate a submission that you have already put in your 1-5 ranking for one or both of these categories if you wish.
  • Please judge submissions on track layout only. This is a coaster layout building contest; theming is pretty much irrelevant here.
  • I know that this form of voting is more anonymous than some may like. If you would like to add a slightly more personal touch, you can post a comment in this thread indicating your top 5 choices, as well as any Realism or Originality nominations. However, can I please request that the Google Form be your first port of call for voting; I will only count votes cast within the Google Form, as if you post in this thread, I wouldn't like to assume whether you've already voted in the Google Form or not. Post your choices in the thread by all means, but please make sure that you log your votes within the Google Form first, as the votes within the Google Form are the votes I'll be counting.
Here is a reminder of everyone's submissions so that you know what you're voting for:
  • Ribena Rumba Ricket, a GCI wooden coaster by @Matt.GC:
  • Wild Timber, a GCI wooden coaster by @tactic:
  • Calypso, a GCI wooden coaster by @Matt N:
  • Dizzy Rascal, a Maurer spinning coaster by @Thameslink Rail:
  • Boaty McSplashface, a Mack water coaster by @RicketyCricket:
  • Canada Creek Railway 2: See It. Say It. Sorted., a Vekoma mine train by @Poisson:

Voting for Round 1 closes on Friday 22nd November 2024 at 11:45pm, and the results will be revealed as part of the Week 3 Weekly Digest.

Get voting for your Round 1 favourites, folks! If you have any questions or concerns about Round 1 voting, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me. I am always more than happy to help.

Let's move onto the Round 2 building now...
Round 2 Building
Now that Round 1 is over, it's time to reveal the next round of the competition! The brief for Round 2 is... Log Flume Replacement at Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach! The context for the round is as follows:
After years of operation, Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach recently removed their iconic Log Flume. And ever since, the park has felt that they've been lacking a certain headline draw... so they want you to design them a brand new roller coaster! With this needing to fill a standout hole within the lineup, Great Yarmouth want something of reasonable scale, but they also want you to bear in mind that the Log Flume plot is not absolutely huge and that money is tight for them, so you can't magic up any ride out of thin air. It'll be a tough balancing act... but what will you come up with?
The constraints for the round are as follows:
  • Maximum Footprint 84m*50m/276ft*164ft
  • Minimum Height 100ft/30m
  • Maximum Budget $10,000
For some context, the area of Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach we're working with here is as follows:
Log-Flume-Plot-GYPB.png

To apply the footprint constraints, I would recommend using the Scenario Editor to make yourself a park template that allows you to enforce the constraints.

However, if you find yourself unable to do this, I have created a Steam Workshop park template with the footprint constraints pre-imposed, which you can download here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3334611590

For console users, I would recommend setting out the footprint constraints using wall pieces or path pieces to build yourself an "area" to work within. Path and wall pieces are typically 4m in length, for reference. I know it's not ideal, but it's unfortunately the best I can recommend given that neither Scenario Editor nor Steam Workshop are available on console... sorry for the inconvenience, folks.

To submit, please build your submission, film a POV and/or off-ride shots of it, and post the video(s) in this thread. You can briefly describe your ride if you wish. YouTube is the website I'd recommend for uploading videos to, as this would integrate best with the Google Form when it comes to voting, but if you want to upload your video(s) using a different method, then that's also fine. If you have any issues with recording or uploading your video(s), please don't hesitate to contact me. I will try my best to assist you.

May I once again emphasise that this is a coaster layout building contest. By all means add some light theming and landscaping if you wish, but the coaster layout should ideally be the focus. Quality of coaster layout is pretty much the be all and end all here; heavy theming won't gain you any points, and no theming won't lose you any points.

The submission deadline for Round 2 is Friday 22nd November 2024 at 11:45pm. If you struggle for time and would like me to extend the deadline, please PM me or request an extension in this thread before the deadline. If you do not make contact with me and ask for an extension, I will assume that you simply do not want to compete in this round and move on after the posted deadline.

I think that's all I need to cover for Week 2. Good luck with Round 2, folks! If you have any questions or concerns about the round, please don't hesitate to contact me. I am always more than happy to help.

Get building for Round 2 and voting for Round 1, everybody!

Um, how do we know how much a coaster costs? And how do we know which are the expensive coasters and which are the cheapo models before we start building?

Um, how do we know how much a coaster costs? And how do we know which are the expensive coasters and which are the cheapo models before we start building?
There should be a base price next to each coaster type in the menu where you pick them; some types are more expensive than others. And for the overall coaster, it should tell you how much it costs if you save it as a blueprint.

I'm going to kick things off this week with my submission... I've tried something a bit more original (for me), and I'm not entirely sure it's worked, but I hope you all like it nonetheless! My submission is Viper, an Intamin impulse coaster:
Viper-Overview.png

The ride stats are as follows:
  • Name: Viper
  • Manufacturer: Intamin
  • Model: Impulse Coaster (Custom)
  • Height: 108ft/33m
  • Speed: 57mph/92kph
  • Length: 1,250ft/381m
  • Inversions: 3
  • Airtime Moments: 3
  • Maximum Positive G-Force: 8.2G (overall), 4.4G (heatmap)
  • Maximum Negative G-Force: -2G (overall), -0.7G (heatmap)
  • Trains: 1 train of 5 cars/20 riders
  • Throughput: 1,046pph (52-53 trains per hour, 1 train every ~1m 9s)
If you'd like to play around with Viper for yourself, here's the Steam Workshop link you can download it from: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3367673437

So that's Viper, my Round 2 submission! I know it's not my best submission, but I hope you like it nonetheless! The in-game people happily rode it and it didn't break g-force limits, anyway...

Just as a reminder for everyone, we are now half way through Week 2.

I’ve had 4 responses to the Round 1 Voting Google Form so far, including my own. If you’d like to vote for your Round 1 favourites, here’s the form allowing you to do so: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeLYXPDJtNIdVyWVdvBJW7ZKX_mD6IyNchQx1Klwm2jd18uRg/viewform

There has been 1 submission for Round 2 so far, and that is my own. If you would like a deadline extension for Round 2, please notify me before the deadline and I would be happy to facilitate one for you. If you have any issues with uploading videos or anything at all, get in touch with me and I would be very happy to solve these issues for you. If you do not get into contact with me before the deadline, I will assume that you are happy forfeiting this round and move on.

The deadline for both Round 2 building and Round 1 voting is Friday 22nd November 2024 at 11:45pm. The Week 3 Weekly Digest will be posted on Saturday 23rd November 2024 at 12am.

Here is my week 2 submission: Spike

From: https://youtu.be/hs556L2GKGA

Manufacturer: Intamin
Model: NewGen Family Shuttle coaster (planco didn't have the right track type that could launch too)
Max Height: 105ft
Speed: 44mph
Length: ?ft
Inversions: 1
Airtime Count: ?
Max Vertical Gs: 4.54g
Max Lateral Gs: 1.96g
Min Vertical Gs: -1.21g
In game price: $5,365

As the game doesn't really like shuttle coasters I've had issues collecting stats for the ride. Furthermore, the coaster doesn't actually act as a shuttle coaster as it tries to launch itself again before it goes back to the station. I hope this is ok, as in essence it's still a shuttle coaster, if not please let me know and I can redo it tomorrow.

(Edit: got my height stat wrong, top of the spike is 105ft)

Let's move onto the Round 3 building now...
Round 3 Building
Now that Round 2 is over, it's time to reveal the next round of the competition! The brief for Round 3 is... Scorpion Replacement at Busch Gardens Tampa! The context for the round is as follows:
In recent months, Busch Gardens Tampa waved goodbye to their iconic Scorpion, one of their oldest roller coasters. As well as being a classic, Scorpion filled an important role in the park's lineup of being somewhat of a starter thrill coaster, to help the kids cut their teeth in on an inverting coaster in particular... so Busch have hired you to devise a replacement for Scorpion that matches the same spirit! They'd like you to keep the inverting aspect in there, but it's not the biggest of areas and Busch Gardens Tampa also doesn't want anything too insane, so you'll have your work cut out! How will you tackle this challenge?
The constraints for the round are as follows:
  • Maximum Footprint 50m*71m/164ft*233ft
  • Maximum Height 100ft/30m
  • Minimum of 1 Inversion
  • Maximum of 3 Inversions
For some context, the area of Busch Gardens Tampa we're working with here is as follows:

To apply the footprint constraints, I would recommend using the Scenario Editor to make yourself a park template that allows you to enforce the constraints.

However, if you find yourself unable to do this, I have created a Steam Workshop park template with the footprint constraints pre-imposed, which you can download here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3334627104

  • Height: 97ft/30m
  • Speed: 51mph/82kph
  • Length: 2,214ft/675m
