Trains from bygone era

In the local edition of 'OUR CITY' I noticed this little article about the forthcoming rail service to Alton Towers, showing that it must still be a viable addition to the future of transport to Alton Towers.
Steam train are set to make a nostalgic return to Stoke-on-Trent. Moorland and City Railways (MCR) is aiming to reopen the main line between Leekbrook and Stoke. The next stage of the project would be an extension of the Churnet Valley Railway line south of Oakamoor to Alton Towers, enabling passenger services from Stoke station to the theme park.

'Poeple travelling to the Towers by train would come to Stoke and many would extend their trip by staying in the city to make the most of the many tourist attractions. And if people are using trains to get to the theme park then that would improve the environment,' said City Council Leader Mohammed Perez.

The piece is on page 6 of this PDF if people are interested. :)

Nobody mentions the main problem of a railway to the old station at Alton: how do you get those people up the massive hill to the park? I guess they could build a new pathway up from the station, round the back of X-Sector, to the plaza but that'd be knackering.

Or they could turn the old mill buildings into an admission block and then people would enter the park via the gates directly opposite the station. As for getting people across the road, the train line would end at Alton, passengers could simply go down a ramp and under the bridge before going up a ramp the other side.

Also to add some weight behind this story, it looks like work to upgrade and revamp existing track is still ongoing and at some pace!

Best guess is they could get a regular service to Towers on that line (there are issues with the stoke end of the line though as it doesn't actually reach the main terminus) then they could run a regular bus service from Towers to the station around the train arrivals.

Wouldn't cost much for the distance travelled.

What they'll probably do is leave it to First to offer an hourly service ;)

Oh god please no. That hourly service will probably be a hour one way and one every 4 hours the other way, starting at 4am and finishing at 8am :p
