[šŸŒŽ Universal GB] General Discussion

Then maybe they should offer to pay for, and project manage, these improvements themselves?

Well that's definitely one way to solve it I guess. Hahaha.

However very unlikely Comcast/Universal will pay for the entire thing. They may offer to contribute some of the costs but I really don't think they are going to fund an entire new road along with relevant junction/s and a new train station. The costs of all that will be eye watering.

They will obviously expect the tax payer to pick up most of these costs and in exchange the resort will hopefully create thousands of job for the next 50 years and beyond. The tax from that alone will be worth the investment from the government will be what they argue.

If I were Comcast/universal I'd build elsewhere tbh.

Why?

Economically the UK is actually doing better than the rest of the major western economies. Yes there is a risk the morons of this country may elect Farage in 2029 but then far right grifters and gaining popularity across the west at the moment so where would be different?

As for planning and infrastructure there is a bill passing through parliament that will theoretically improve that.

I was wondering when the 'it's not getting built' or 'they should build elsewhere' peeps would turn up again. We're literally in the planning stages where it's just waiting for a greenlight and activity at the site is ramping up. The concrete slab seems to get something new every single day - they now have 3 welfare units on site, two frontend loaders, a couple of excavators and I expect we'll have even more before the end of the week.

Is this a Merlin burner account? šŸ˜‚

France, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands all have world class theme parks, we don't so there is a gap in the market. I 100% think this it getting built
Haha this made me laugh to be fair.. This is the UK, we don't build anything good here anymore. It's always scaled back or small or half what it should be (HS2, Hyperia etc) Too many planning laws and moaners will get it stopped or something. Happy to be wrong but I just can't see it actually happening.

Bring you back to the legislation currently passing through parliament that will make this less of a thing.

Plus we build plenty of good things so long as it doesn’t pass through a Tory, Lib Dem or Green constituency.

Universal will be paying for and constructing the park and they won't be scaling back or otherwise the project wouldn't be worth starting in the first place.

The government's input will be sorting the roads and nearby train stations. And not sorting that out when the development will bring jobs and further projects to the area for the next 100 years would be utterly stupid.

Universal have now trademarked ā€œUniversal UK resortā€ too:

Wonder if they'll trademark a few, then get the public to vote for their favourite? Certainly possible.
It's unlikely. They will be trademarking variations on their name to prevent others from using them. The word "Universal", by itself, is generic which makes it tricky to protect.

You could set up a small soft play area and call it "Universal Park", for example. As long as you don't use Universal's logo, or word mark, it would be completely allowed as Universal do not own a trademark on the phrase "Universal Park".

There isn't anything preventing a campervan site from calling themselves Universal UK Resort, unless the submitted application above gets approved, as the phrase itself could be considered generic.

Doesn't it have to be consulted on and put to a vote before it's formally rubber stamped?

I imagined the rubber stamping being some months away yet.

I actually have no idea, I've seen so many different versions of what will happen that I'm just confused by it all.

But if Universal want to start enabling works at the very start of 2026 then surely the SDO process wouldn't require waiting months after public consultation. After all Universal did state they expected the SDO to be approved in the autumn and not December/Jan time.
